We have visited many beaches up and down the east coast & in the Caribbean. That being said, it takes a really great beach for us to be impressed. This beach is beautiful. We spent time sitting listening to the waves. The surf can be...More

Big beach is a beautiful beach, almost two-thirds of a mile (1 km) long and over 100 feet (30 m) wide, it is one of the most popular beaches on the island. I will caution you that Big Beach also have one of the most...More

As you travel south of Makena Big Beach you will notice lava flows on both sides of the road. These are the remnants of the last eruption of Haleakala in 1790. When the road stops you are at La Perouse Bay. You may park there,...More

We came to this beach for snorkeling based on advice from a former local who was staying at our resort. We mentioned we wanted to go snorkeling and were considering a Molkini tour; he suggested snorkeling here as an alternative. When we arrived after venturing...More

Beautiful views, beaches and volcanic formations. Off of the beaten path -- scene and quiet. I have been to Maui many times and never visited, but it was worth it!

The BIG beach at Makena State Park is spectacular and during the week not terribly crowded. Only porta potties available and one food/drink truck close to the entrance. Be prepared to walk a bit to reach the beach and bring water and food if you...More

I was told this is rated a #4 in the best of all swimming beaches. I sure see how. First there's plenty of parking. It's in a state park but it's still free. And the beach is huge! It just goes on and on. The...More
