If you want to become acquanted with the history of African Americans in Philadelphia, this is a great place to visit. You'll find lots of stuff not found in the mainstream history books. The museum is not very large, but nicely layed out.

Check the temporary exhibitions before coming here. They'll weigh heavily on whether or not you should attend. I loved the 2nd floor, which had a live actor recounting the fascinating story of Henry "Box" Brown, who mailed himself out of slavery. There were also super...More

We toured the museum in the morning hours. It was very clean and quiet. The staff was very friendly. The tour was self guided. Would definitely recommend.

Very informative and well maintained museum. Great family outing spot. If you are buying City Pass/Philadelphia Pass, this museum is included in one of the attractions.

As someone who has been to many different museums mostly in the midwest dedicated to African American history; this one was definitely lacking and left my children feeling like we were ripped off. With all the low cost to free events to do in Philadelphia;...More

I expected a well-developed panorama of the history of African-Americans in Philadelphia... and felt somewhat let down... The museum does have a very condensed summary of this on the first floor, but it seemed rather thin... The second floor was the most interesting part of...More
