My teenage son and I meandered onto Pioneer Square during our visit to Portland. It was busy with people doing all sorts of things so super fun for mid-westerners like ourselves to just sit and watch all that activity around us. We grabbed lunch at...More

A pretty urban space I saw used for some kind of Breast cancer event, so it was loud and noisy and to be avoided. Other times it was where the homeless spread themselves out, or youth loitered in an intimidating fashion. I didn't care for...More

Don’t get me wrong the city planners have brought all their creative juices to play here in creating a happening square but I guess it still needs an event to come alive. On a clear weekday morning this place was sleepy. Not quite the vibe...More

The first time we visited, the square was playing hots to an India cultural festival - filled with music, dance, food and more. The following day it was back to normal - a pleasant, sunny spot for office workers to enjoy an alfresco takeaway lunch....More

We didn't find this square very impressive except for the big Starbucks store at one corner. It's certainly not like the "squares" we've seen in Europe! But it's a good starting point to visit the city of Portland.

Busy center of community activity on the plaza. There was an Indian/Hindu festival going on during the day we visited: Food, things to buy, people to talk with, and lots of local kids of Indian descent, costumed and performing or waiting to perform.

This historical spot is in the middle downtown, opposite the old courthouse. Since it is right by the Visitor Center (well worth stopping at), you may as well walk around the square a bit.
