From the Muelle General of Pátzcuaro, a 70 peso return ticket to the Island of Janitzio, the main island of the lake famed for its Day of the Dead celebrations. To avoid the crowds, we went in early October. A pleasant 25 minute boat trip...More
Very interesting and a very interesting walk to the top. The boat trip to the island was a lot of fun and provides a chance to see the surrounding area. I didn't have the courage to do the zip line down to a neighboring island.
Tourist trap for the most part. The boat ride to the island is interesting. There's a statue at the high point of the island, and you can climb up inside like the Statue of Liberty. Get a nice view. The climb to the statue, however,...More
I live in Patzcuaro and I still enjoy a day trip to the island every now and then. The round trip in the boats will cost you 70 pesos per person and you pay at the ticket boot. Will you arrive there, you get to...More
We took a boat over to Isla Janitzio and had a wonderful day. What a beautiful and unique place this is. The island is home to "Butterfly" fishermen who have nets that look like butterfly wings. On the island itself are hundreds of shops and...More
After reading other reviews I was concerned that it would be dirty, crowded and we would be bothered by hawkers. Absolutely not. We paid 70 pesos each and waited for 30 minutes before the boat left the harbour. The 40 minute ride was great across...More
Taking a boat trip to Lake Patzcuaro is fun. However, once you get to the island it is full of shops selling junky tourist merchandise. The view from the top of the island is probably the best feature.
Everything started perfect the boat ride to the island is relaxing. Once you get to the island you are greeted by the kids who just want money. Then you have to walk alot just to get to the statute. Once up there there restaurants and...More
We probably didn't see the island and the views at their best, muddy waters due to rainy season in lake and slightly overcast but the island itself was dirty. Rubbish everywhere, an over proliferation of tourist shops all selling the same stuff and no information...More
Let me say first, I don't like to give bad reviews. But this long (40 minute) boat ride to the isla was not spectacular in any way. Once there, the vendors had very little diversity of products and we only stayed a few minutes to...More

Morelia is probably the best option if the Patzcuaro hotels are full. The drive is easy (30 - 40 mins) but it will be very busy so expect traffic delays and problems finding a parking spot. Maybe there are tours from Morelia that may be easier? Access to Janitzio is by boat from Patzcuaro muelle (not in the town itself) and these are also very busy, with queues and the risk of overcrowding. Take care!

I would recommend staying in Patzcuaro where there are so many hotel options. The ferry to the island takes only 15 to 20 minutes each way. In Patzcuaro we stayed at the Casa de Naranjo which is right on the Plaza - but... More
I would recommend staying in Patzcuaro where there are so many hotel options. The ferry to the island takes only 15 to 20 minutes each way. In Patzcuaro we stayed at the Casa de Naranjo which is right on the Plaza - but there are many hotels on the plaza and patzcuaro has several wonderful B7B's.
