The road up to the top was a reasonably easy drive, given that I come from the flatlands where switchbacks are almost unknown. Views from the top were spectacular. Clouds moved past occasionally but changes in lighting made the scenery that much more interesting. We...More

As a resident cyclist, it's been an ambition to try and ride up Haleakala. The road has many wonderful views and the staff at the National Park are very helpful and friendly. Weather can be very unpredictable, so it's good to heed the clothing advice...More

I love any road with thrilling views and switch back turns. This makes it to a high place on my list. The views on the way up (as long as you’re not shrouded in clouds) were magnificent! If you are shrouded in clouds, then that’s...More

In our dozen or so trips to Maui, this is the first time we visited Haleakala National Park. It took us about 1.5 hrs from Kihei, one way, leaving around 8:15 am. We went on a sunny day and by the time we were heading...More

We decided to drive up the mountain mid-morning because we were unable to make it for sunrise and the views and stops along the way were stunning of the ocean and small towns below.

Was an incredible winding road with spectacular views. Not for first time drivers, but well worth the fear to achieve some of Hawaii's best views.

This road is a beautiful drive to the top of Haleakala crater. There are a couple places to pull off with magnificent views. Definitely make at least one stop on the way up. if you stop at the posted stop and follow the walking trails...More

While most people opt to go to watch the sunrise at Haleakala, we opted to watch the sunset. You should get there at least an hour before sunset to get close parking. We were in the midst of clouds which made for incredible views with...More

We drove up and back in the afternoon. Such diversity of vegetation as you climb up. It was cloudy and rainy when we were there, then it sleeted (39 deg) at the summit. It was thrilling for us, a geophysicist and a meteorologist! The terrain...More

There are some dizzying views IF clear but these are distant views. The slope is gentle along roadside and the guardrails are generous. There are no sheer drops anywhere on the drive so it is surprisingly calm for a... More

Yes, the road is paved all the way to the top. A Harley will probably do fine. You still need to make a reservation if you are trying to see sunrise.

Probably takes 15-20 minutes to get to road that leads up country depending on traffic; there are no short cuts
