Amazing experience up close with a large colony of Gannets.
I toured with Gannet Safaris to Cape Kidnappers in Hawke’s Bay NZ while on a cruise. It was super easy to book with the cruise line and it made the travel to and from the ship very easy. This is one I wouldn’t book on my own if cruising. Our guide was Rob and he was informative and fun. The ride out to the colony is on a 4 wheel drive van and wasn’t too bumpy. The views are beautiful on the way. You are very close to the gannets and have plenty of free time to photo and observe them. The Gannets are not afraid of people and this allows you to see some very real behaviors. Afterwards you stop at the company’s base for a light snack and tea. Make sure you try the strawberries. I highly recommend this company and this experience.

      Gannet-tas-tic!
Exceeded expectations. Booking process is easy. The departure point is easy to find and clearly signposted. The drive out was fun and informative. Thanks Jan. the gannet colony is stunning - we got so close to the birds. Drive back was a little snoozy, but Jan kept us entertained. A great kiwi tourist experience.

      Definitely worth a visit
Despite the appalling weather we were able to see and photograph the gannets. The driver provided some interesting information about the birds and the estate. Highly recommended

Birds soooo close high above sea level
Excellent Bird Safari with a very nice drive through the backlands through non public roads on the way there and back along with great explanations from the driver. The spot itself is stunning, high above sea level and with 3 bird colonies at sight, one of them just a few steps away. Net, they totally over delivered against expectations and a tour I’d recommend to anybody with or without children and independent of children’s age. Go for it.

What a privilege to see thousands of gannets close up.
What an adventure. The scenery on the drive to the Gannets was beautiful and remote. The two large gannet colonies was quite impressive. We were within a few feet of one colony as they flew in and out of the colony, preened for each other and greeted with affection. The second colony was hundreds of feet below on a rocky area that jutted out into the ocean. Thousands of beautiful gannets were so impressive to see so close up. It was a delightful experience.

Breathtaking and enjoyable ride to the gannets
Although we visited at the end of the season it was still a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The tour guide was engaging and very knowledgeable, the scenery was breathtaking and the Gannets put on a flight show for is. We'll be back again!

      Gannet extravaganza
Such a worthwhile experience. Friendly, informed driver (didn’t tell us his name?), comfortable bus, fabulous commentary on local history. The open access to the gannet colony to be able to observe them in natural habitat a privilege. Thoroughly recommend- good value for $$.

      Excellent day out
We had Jan for today's Safari and somehow managed to get stunning weather after the recent weather. Jan was highly informative and gave us lots of info as we headed up towards the colony area. With a few stops along the way and plenty of time at the top it was a perfectly timed trip. Definitely a must see!

      Highly recommended gannet safari
Fantastic safari, beautiful landscape and scenery, and I thought I had seen most of NZs beauty. The Gannets were amazing to see. Informative travel guide. Only negative was no air conditioning in bus (which is advertised as part of tour). Rugged terrain also, not for the faint hearted, but all part of the experience

      Thoroughly entertaining and emjoyable...
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience although the smell was a bit overpowering when the door of the 4WD was opened when we reached the gannet colony! Richard was our guide and in my opinion, he was the best guide in all of the tours we had around the Nth Island of NZ. He is knowledgeable, friendly yet professional - an excellent driver over the hilly terrain. I'm not a bird 'enthusiast' but the commentary he gave us was very entertaining (even though he did mention that the NZ sheep on the property had two legs longer on one side of their body so as they stayed upright on the hills!!!) but his humour and a couple of 'tall tales' made it extremely interesting. In my opinion, it is well worth going to the gannet colony - they are exceptional birds and ask for Richard if he is available for your tour as you will certainly enjoy it.

Today my friend and I were fortunate enough to travel to see the gannets with Gannet Safaris guide Jan. We have travelled extensively and had many guided tours and we both agree that Jan is one of the best guides we have had. From picking us up(spot on time) she regailed us with facts in a way that was both informative and entertaining. The drive to the Gannets is very enjoyable and scenic and it was very special to drive to the brow of the hill and be confronted with the birds from 2or 3 days old and every age in between to the beautiful adults. We definitely recommend this tour

Fantastic scenery and an excellent driver/ guide (David). Going beyond the Cape Kidnappers sanctuary gate, understanding the environment up there with the help of David, appreciating the scale of the volunteers work, seeing the incredible scenery of Hawke Bay from a totally new view point and spending time watching the gannets was very special.
David is highly knowledgeable and passionate about all that goes on in this special area and this came across in his narrative. The vehicle we travelled in was very comfortable and I couldn’t believe we also received a coffee and cookie at the top. Thankyou very much for a special morning.

This is a unique way to see the worlds largest mainland colony of gannets - buses deliver you to within a few feet of the nesting area. Literally. David was our very knowledgeable, and entertaining, driver and guide. Almost $NZ90 is not cheap, but for the three hour safari, this was still great value for money. Plus, you are contributing to a wonderful privately-funded wildlife sanctuary established by the American philanthropist, Julian Robertson. Highly recommended all round.

Before we arrived at the gannet colony, I turned to my husband and said, "Even if we don't see one gannet, this tour was worth the cost of admission", because of the amazing drive and commentary by our driver, Tony. We saw breathtaking views of cliffs, and beach. But then, we arrived at the gannet colony. We had 45 minutes to observe, photograph, and enjoy the mature and fledgling gannets. It was an up close and personal experience I will never forget!!!

Spectacular birds and scenery. Experienced and knowledgable guide but did repeat himself a bit. The "included morning/afternoon tea" could be stepped up a notch - bring your own. If you're fit I'd recommend the beach tractor/hike option if it's available to you.

A fabulous way to spend half a day if you're in Hawke's Bay. Our guide Jan was absolutely superb - knowledgeable, personable, funny - all while driving some pretty tricky roads and/or giving a running commentary and/or making morning tea! The views were stunning, the birds put on a superb display, the smell was fine if you were upwind ... really this trip exceeded all my expectations.

With a small party of five guests including us, Rob took us on this roundtrip 3-hour experience with professional enthusiasm. While driving the bus along shingle roads on high ridges with stunning views, he was able to clearly articulate the stories of the history of the area, nature and of course prepare us with salient facts and figures about the gannets.

Upon arriving in front of the colony, he ensured the bus was positioned so as to protect us from the windy conditions as required. A cup of hot drink soothed us during the 45-minutes we had to oogle the birds and take all the photos and videos we wanted.

We learned enough facts from Rob during the ride out with more to read on the signage at the gannet colony itself. He was also gracious in answering questions when we stopped.

Make sure you take warm clothing with you just in case. Go to the bathroom before you start as there is no opportunity during the tour. Sit on the same side of the bus (for both going and returning) to get different views of vista. Take a tripod for your camera if you can.

You drive in a small bus across a huge farming and wilderness area to the headland where the gannets noisily roost. Our driver/guide was superb: he used to be a shepherd there back in the 70s, and what he doesn't know about local history, farming and trade can be written on a postage stamp. I enjoyed his commentary and the views even more than the amazing gannet colony. Do go.

We enjoyed our tour to the Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and we had a good time. I did not think we would see the gannets from that close but we did! We were literally a few feets away from the colony. Perfect for taking up-close pictures of youngs and birds' features! The colony is quite big and we saw a lot of birds take off, land with algae to build their nests, wrestle with their beaks, and care for their youngs. These birds are majestic! The view from the hill is also gorgeous. Coffee and biscuits were served but I was so focused on the gannets that I missed it! It is a great experience for the whole family overall.

We booked a trip to the Gannett colony and the experience exceeded our expectations. The guide Jan was very enthusiastic in sharing her knowledge of the area and the birds. Seeing the birds so close was a photographer’s dream and the coffee and buscuits were very welcome.
We highly recommend taking a trip with Gannet Safaris Overland.
