About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Geraldi0 contributionsAmazing winter wonderland for Tongariro CrossingWorth every cent: the guides were personable, skilled and kind. I'm in my mid 60s, moderately fit, albeit slow on the uphills And the weather was SUPERB!Written 22 August 2024
- OldCrow220 contributionsBig thanks to Phil, our tour guideGreat, maybe, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Would definitely recommend, especially for Lord Of The Rings fans. The track is a bit challenging, requires good physical form, but it definitely worth itWritten 15 August 2024
- 937maxim0 contributionsTHE BEST!!MUST DO for every hiking enthusiast! Highly recommend the professionalism of Adrift, thanks for everything!! We felt safe every moment of the walk and we very happy to have been able to finish the crossing in Winter!Written 9 August 2024
- christinepN3723JR0 contributionsWonderful TripThe view was breathtaking. It was a wonderful experience for me, thanks to the great guide and team. The weather was very changeable, snow, rain, wind and sunshine, but a real adventure on the volcano.Written 25 July 2024
- 525frankt0 contributionsWeathered out / Good communicationBooked a solo trip up Ruapehu but the weather didn’t look good. Adrift was very clear in their communication to customers- call ahead 3 days out to confirm. Ruapehu was out but maybe the crossing? Talked to Stew the night before after the weather report and he couldn’t advise to do the crossing. Full refund. I appreciate the company taking safety seriously. Weather happens. Good communication from them. Will try again another time.Written 23 July 2024
- hamaash0 contributionsMust-do experienceHad an amazing day. Stu, our guide, did a great job of looking after us. He ensured that we were as safe as possible and also gave us a lot of insight about the history and geography of the Tongariro national park.Written 22 May 2024
- Adventure4023410 contributionsFeedback, it's a gift. The guide we had (Chris) was very safety conscious regarding the walk and made sure everyone had the right equipment. So we got off to an assured start. We didn't complete the walk due to the weather conditions and turned back before the half way point. Ironically, despite being so risk adverse, he was looking at his mobile phone while driving the van back to the pick up point; a complete no no from a safety perspective. Not a big issue but, despite all the walkers engaging with Chris, he made no effort to talk a about anything else apart from himself and his experiences. An opportunity missed, particularly with the children who were there.Written 3 April 2024
- 665samanthab0 contributionsOne of the best experiences of my lifeMartin was our guide and he was more than fantastic and very supportive when I start freaking out about the wind on the way to the summit. Once we made it the westher cleared up and turned out to be a beautiful experience with abit if adventure. I will remember this journey for a life time. Will recommend this company to everyone. Staff and your guide was friendly supportive and will do they best to give you an adventureWritten 27 March 2024
- AhteadPhillips0 contributionsA truly memorable day.I had an amazing day with Adrift Tongariro on the Tongariro Crossing. Adrift thoroughly checked our preparation, ensuring everyone in the group had the correct clothing and footwear for what started as a cloudy, wet and very windy crossing. Our guide was superb - she judged the pace of our crossing perfectly, so that the group overall didn't struggle on the steeper sections. Around 11.30 the weather miraculously cleared, giving us fantastic views of Mt Ngauruhoe, the Red Crater, the emerald lakes and Lake Taupo . Thank you Adrift Tongariro for a fabulous highlight of my four weeks in New Zealand.Written 25 March 2024
- ulagamsutrum2810 contributionsGuided Tongariro Alpine Crossing hikeChris and Corbin did an amazing job as. guides taking us on this challenging hike. Safety was a priority and they made sure that everyone was comfortable before moving to the next stage of the hike. They helped us navigate windy conditions on the way up and a steep scree as we descended. One of them always walked along with the slowest member of the group, so that no one was left behind.Written 24 March 2024
- charlottewE6042WC0 contributionsFriendly company great experienceReally lovely company and loved the guided hike through tongoriro alpine pass provided lots of breaks and additional information and kit. Only downscored because the “grandad pace” they stated it would be was definitely not that slow and meant some of the group turned back after 2 hours, which was a real shame. I think they could have continued at a more moderate walking pace. But overall we loved it and would book with this company againWritten 20 March 2024
- BIGDUD93570 contributionsTongariro Crossing 12th MarchThe Crossing, with Chris as our guide, was brilliant. Blessed by decent weather and a great group, it made up for the disappointment of not being able to go to Ruahape Summit. Transfers were good, food was fantastic, and Chris was a great guide. Someone said he knew every rock, and not only could he name them, he had an adventure to tell about every one of them. Truly good day walk. If Adrift aren't the best, I will be surprised.Written 16 March 2024
- Claudia C0 contributionsAwesome guided tour a must do hike! Our guide Stew was spectacular, caring and full of interesting knowledge of the area. We had a wonderful day hiking the crossing with 9 others in our group. We were the youngest in the group at 58 years old. It is a long hike but the pace is slow and doable. Only one section with a steep rocky descent was a little difficult but Stew helped us struggling. He was an awesome guide. The full day hike is well worth the effort because the scenery is unbelievable. Blue lake, red rock and the whole volcanic area will leave you speechless. A must do if visiting the north island in NZ..Written 11 March 2024
- CornishEm0 contributionsCompetent and confident guidesI was really impressed with Adrift. Their website makes it really clear about the equipment that you need and they state on there that they check you have suitable clothes etc with you when you check in. They were thorough in checking that each person had appropriate clothing and footwear and water with them. They were also helpful in the days before the walk advising me to change my original day if I could due to the weather forecast when I contacted them. There were high winds on the day that I switched to and our guide made it clear that we may not be able to go ahead with the while walk until we had reached the deciding point and she was able to assess the conditions and how the group was coping with them. The visibility was poor in places and it was very windy on the higher part, so I was reassured at being part of a group led by people who knew the trail well. Fortunately the clouds cleared on the descent and we were all able to enjoy the views. I really recommend Adrift if you want to do the crossing as part of a guided group.Written 26 February 2024
- Cruiser046239640260 contributionsA challenging walk but amazing views around every cornerI actually only signed up for the half day as I wasn't sure if I was fit enough and I knew my husband wasn't. At the separation of the 2 experiences however I was able to choose to do the whole day experience while my husband went back. It was an incredibly beautiful walk with so many fantastic views. It was challenging but the guides were very encouraging and even gave out sweets! They were obviously very experienced and loved what they were doing which made it even better for us. I'm so glad to have done the whole thing. We were also lucky to have perfect weather - clear views and sun.Written 22 February 2024

Do not book with Experience Oz for this tour, you will lose your money. My wife and I booked this tour for our honeymoon. Experience Oz never contacted us to let us know the tour was canceled. We disputed the charge with our credit card and the company lied and said that they rebooked our tour, they didn't. I wish I would have listened to the other reviews. Details below.
We had a sunrise tour booked, I called the morning before we were scheduled to leave and they let us know that the crossing was closed, this was in early January 2020, due to someone passing away on the crossing. The closure happened 2 days before, they didn't contact us in those 2 days.
When I was on the phone with them, I let them know that we were canceling the tour. The representative said nothing about not getting our money back. I called back a few hours later to confirm we would not be charged, at that time they let me know that we would still be charged and tried to re-schedule for another date and time. All the dates and times they offered did not work with our schedule. I let them know that, and they said that we had to pick one of "their" available dates and times. We did not, we trusted our credit card dispute would win out as we were in the right.
Fast forward a few months later, today I finished talking with the credit card company. We disputed the charge and we lost. Experience Oz lied to their bank and said that they rebooked us. They might have rebooked us, but they never confirmed with us the new date and we never approved the rebooking. That is wrong.
Sure if you want to go on this tour, do it, but make sure you have 1-2 days on either side of the tour sitting around doing nothing or you might lose your money.
The worst part, this was what I was the adventure that I was looking forward to most and now it's the stain on the trip.

We had booked a Sunrise Crossing with Adrift for a Tuesday morning in January and it was the thing we looked forward to the most in our 3 weeks trip through NZ.
We had checked the weather a few days in advance. Unfortunately, it was going to rain that day/night with lots of thunderstorms. When I called their office 2 days before our tour, the guy on the phone told me the tour was cancelled on Tuesday morning because of the weather and that we were going to be differed to a daytime tour.
We were not previously made aware of the fact that the tour might change and the schedule differ by 7 hours which basically meant a whole day. As I had previously told them we were only supposed to get to the Tongariro region on the day of the tour and had a long way to drive up on Tuesday (the following day) so a Daytime tour was unfortunately impossible for us to do even though we'd really have loved to do it.
When I explained this to the guy on the phone, he was hesitant at first but then simply told me they were going "to put up a sunrise" tour for us which basically meant go up at 2 AM in a cloudy and rainy weather, walking in the dark to not actually see the sun rise or see any of the surroundings. Now that doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it?
The person on the phone then told me to ring back at 8 AM on Monday morning (the following day) to see if the weather forecast had changed. We tried to ring their office multiple times that morning as we were told to do and noone answered (neither on the phone, nor to my previous 2 emails for that fact). As the weather forecast hadn't changed the least bit and noone answered the phone, we assumed the tour was still cancelled. We wrote them another email and even left our mobile phone number so they could reach us (being tourists we didn’t have an internet connection everywhere).
We hadn't heard from them by noon so we drove up the coast. When we got to our hostel we got an email from them, sent out at around 3 PM, telling us the sunrise tour was going to be put up anyways.
By that point it was virtually impossible for us to even get there on time. Besides that, the weather forecast was still rain and thunderstorms so a sunrise tour still did not make any sense at all and was even risky.
I find the approach they had inadmissible and just profoundly unprofessionnal. We didn't get an answer to half of our emails. Then someone from their office clearly tells us the tour is cancelled due to the weather which is totally understandable. When informed that we could not go on a daytime tour due to our holiday schedule (not everyone can stay as long as they want to), a sunrise tour was all of a sudden going to be 'put up' for us despite the same weather.
First of all, if they sometimes differ people onto tours that are on an entirely different schedule they might want to inform them of that possibility before they book. Unfortunately, we only had 3 weeks in NZ and had to plan everything through in detail so it simply was not possible for us to stay longer. Even though we would have loved to do the crossing.
Second, i don't see how doing a sunrise tour without the sun would make sense. It was not only rainy with thunderstorms coming up and the sun wouldn't show but during the night you wouldn't even see the surroundings which you would at least see during the day even in case of rain. The people from Adrif clearly felt the same as we were told our tour was cancelled.
I find the approach quite the opposite of customer oriented I must say. We had booked a scenic helicopter flight in Franz Josef for about the same price the crossing costs. We weren't charged in advance. Due to the weather conditions we couldn't do the flight. The guy said it wasn't possible that day, apologized, but it cost us nothing. He did not tell us it was cancelled, then wrote an email to tell us it was ok again after we'd driven off, or expect us to sit around until the weather was ok again to take us up. The people from Adrift might want to follow his example.
In the end, they never even bothered to reply to a single one of our emails and kept our 590 dollars all to themselves for a tour we never went on due to the weather conditions. Way to go when it comes to customer service !

My partner and I had an amazing time doing the sunrise Tongarino crossing guided by Laura. We met at 1am and Laura gave us exactly what we needed to be warm and safe on the crossing - thermal top, gloves, small torch, beanie, extra coat, and I decided to take the crampons. Then we were off! We drove 30 mins to the track and started walking in the dark.
Overall, the crossing was absolutely beautiful. We didn't see another hiker until over the half way point - given the large number of hikers toward the end of the crossing, this was a real bonus just to be on the peaks all by ourselves.
Laura is just awesome. Very knowledgeable and friendly, down to earth, good sense of humour, and kept me going when I got cold and silent after lunch with some friendly chatting.
Would wholeheartedly recommend doing the crossing with Adrift! Thank you Laura and Adrift for the best adventure of our holiday to NZ.
