        Absolutely wonderful
Great village with amazing views of the mountains. Affordable accommodation options book quickly. There are plenty of food options and activities if you can afford them. Heaps of helicopter tour operators are based here. There are great walks you can do without a car. The glacier is better as a drive as it's not suoer close. There's one supermarket and petrol station. Happy hour drinks are popular. The surrounding area is beautiful and there are lakes etc to visit. If you don't have a car there is a paid bus transport service which you book. The Intercity bus from Greymouth if catching the Transalpine train isn't cheap but is scenic and comfortable. Booking online was easy. You can request being dropped closer to your hotel.

        A bit of a gem!
Loved getting off the beaten path, plus the little insights into flora & fauna as well as the overall glacier info. Guide couldn't have been more chilled, relaxed and encouraging of everyone in the group. Would highly recommend this tour.

        Fantastic!
Fantastic tour we had at Franz Josef Glacier. Our guide Gerome (hope I'm spelling it right) showed us the magnificence of the glacier, some hidden places in the forest, and explained a lot about the flora, fauna, geology.... Our daughters, who are 9 and 6, never left his side and he kindly answered all their questions.

Exceptional knowledge and scenery on this tour
An informative and picturesque tour of the Franz Josef area. Going off the main tourist path provided opportunities to see other amazing scenery not available from the public paths, plus a waterfall, flora and experienced some bush tucker. Cliff was a great tour guide with terrific local knowledge and adapted the tour to cater for all abilities and interest levels. In addition, it was fantastic that the tour provided the use of raincoats and hiking boats. Strongly recommend this tour.

        The best tour
This was the best tour we had as a small family whilst on our recent holiday in New Zealand. Our tour went ahead despite in pouring rain all night. We were given water proof clothes and shoes, although the rain actually cleared and we didn’t need them on the tour. We did notice that the helicopters were not flying that morning, due to the weather not being favourable. Our guide Cathy was absolutely amazing, she was so knowledgeable on all things Franz Josef Glacier, the birds, plants, fungi, everything! We learnt so much on this tour, more than we ever would have learnt walking ourselves up to the glacier viewing platform, as we were taken off the main path into the foliage where only tours can go. It was really cool to ‘disappear’ and then ‘reappear’ back onto the main path, so much so that our 10 year old even loved it. Morning tea was down on the glacial valley floor surrounded by nature and no other tourists. So many positive things I could say about this tour, but do yourself a favour and book now! Thank you so much Glacier Valley Eco Tour and Cathy.

Great tour guide, beautiful part of the world!
Cliff was a great tour guide who took us on an off-the-beaten-track path to a great viewing spot of the Fox Glacier! Entertaining and an enjoyable, gentle activity out in nature!

        Great knowledge of local nature!
Amazingly knowledgable guide. He showed us so many plants and birds, which was great as we were really keen to see as many native birds as possible. The walking paths were really interesting and we went through some really cool areas away from the main tourist paths. Tea/coffee/biscuit stops were a great addition! We would highly recommend! We did both the Franz and Fox tours in one day and had a great time!

A unexpected stunning walk through the wilderness of Fox Glacier
All terrains and habitats were covered under the expert guiding of Jerome. He's wide knowledge enabled us to fully appreciate the fragile nature of this endangered environment. The clouds lifted and we were able to see the length of the Fox Glacier and Douglas Peak above.

Ecology, botany, geography & glaciology at its best!
Despite a cloud day, we were treated to the delights of the native bush and river bed around Franz Josef Glacier on a guarded tour with Jerome. He was has a vast array expertise in glaciers, flora and fauna - we even got to taste some berries and leaves whilst foraging!!

        Great experience
The walk was great and views of the glacier worth the trip. Jerome's knowledge was very good and was a significant factor for the great walk, recommend this to everyone. Terry Turner, Hobart

        Great experience
A fantastic experience. Our guide was knowledgeable, interesting and attentive. We got to experience nature and see the less ‘public’ aspect of the glacier and its environs. Cannot rate the tour highly enough. We learnt so much and thoroughly enjoyed the experience

Thanks to Cliff for a Great Hike!
We had a wonderful guided hike with Cliff. He took our family (two kids, 8 and 11) “off-track” so that we had a bit more challenging hike through the rain forest. They let us borrow boots for free. The hike was interesting and led to a beautiful waterfall, the glacier, and many hidden streams. Cliff was very informative and shared a lot about the wildlife and environment. We also had a break for hot chocolate and Cookie Time cookies. Overall, highly recommended if you are visiting Franz Joseph with a family!

Great off the beaten tracks walk
Tyana guided us around tracks either side of the regular access to the scenic overlook. Lots of tree and shrub ID , history etc.. Details of the geology and history of the area, gentle scrambles around the rocks. Lots of bird life. If you're hanging around half a day waiting for flights this is definitely a great way to spend 3 or so hours

Our transport to Lake Matheson arrived bang on pick-up time at 6am and we were swiftly transported to the village of Fox Glacier to pick up others. We were therefore the first vehicle in the car park beside the café at Lake Matheson and when we walked in our early start was rewarded with the black water being so still that the reflections were perfect. Unfortunately, there was some low cloud over the mountains but the Lake conditions were perfect. We walked round in a clockwise direction and it wasn’t until after 8.15 am that we met other people scrabbling to get the perfect pictures that we had easily got. Around that time a slight breeze got up causing ripples on the water which made us very smug that we had got there early enough to have it all – just wonderful! Our guide was a lovely person but didn’t really have a clear grasp of all the things he should have known about and his commentary was spasmodic and pretty much in passing, lacking in substance and detail. He was unable to answer several fairly simple questions put to him about the Lake’s eco system and fauna which was disappointing. You should do this walk on your own without a guide as it is clearly signposted and you won’t miss anything. There is apparently a very good café at the Lake for breakfast on your return but we couldn’t visit it or the information centre and barely had time for a rest visit before being chased into their van for the return journey. Doing it on your own also applies to going to the viewing site for the Fox Glacier which is further down the same road you take to Lake Mathesen which we did the following day and were rewarded with great views and the same applies to walking into the public viewing area for Fox and Franz Joseph glaciers – do it on your own, you don’t need a guide.

This eco tour was awesome simply for the knowledgeable, informative, interactive and friendly tour guide/driver. Learnt a lot about the trees, plantations and natural vegetations of the region. The natural scenery was spectacular in the midst of the rain. Would certainly very highly recommend this eco tour to any off beat traveler.

It was a very early start for the drive out - but we were rewarded with the most beautiful sunrise over the lake.

Along the path, Cliff was fabulous yet again and explained the flora and how things grew!

Give yourself a chance to witness this marvelous sight!

The place is still charming for all types of people. Hikers and non-hikers, the path is very simple, you walk through the lush vegetation of New Zealand until you reach the fantastic views of Lake Matheson, which is an authentic mirror of the mountains. This visit is a must. You can't miss it if you want to enjoy unbeatable views
