Hobbiton has top billing, but don't discount the Maori experience!
Feb 2020
Hobbiton is not to be missed. If you're a fan, doubly so. However, there's been plenty written about this... the unsung gem here is the Rotorua Geothermal Geyser and the Maori University at the first part of the trip. This surprised me with it's heartfelt introduction to the Maori culture and what they are doing to preserve it. In addition, our guide was one of the most interesting guides I've ever had. When he talked, everyone within earshot listened in on instinct, even the other guides. The drive between Hobbiton and the Maori Village is a bit long, but no other tour can give you so much. Just do yourself a favor and sign up before they sell out.

Excellent tour of the Maori Village and Hobbiton.
Apr 2019 • Couples
We were met at the cruise ship dock and whisked away on the comfortable van through beautiful scenery first to the Geothermal Maori Village then to Hobbiton. The driver gave us explanations of the area we drove through and when we arrived at the Maori village we were greeted by the Maori guide. The performance was highlighted by the Haka dance and the village was interesting but the smell of sulfur was very strong.
We then proceeded to go to Hobbiton which was the highlight of our trip. I have been a Lord of the Rings fan forever. Although the site was crowded, we were able to take lots of photos and our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Too soon we were at the Green Dragon for an ale and then back to Tauranga.
Although it was a long day, it was unforgettable.

Excellent Tour
Jan 2019 • Couples
Booked independently, this tour of Hobbiton and the Maori Village (geothermal geyser) was excellent. Our driver guide provided great commentary on the way to Hobbiton and the Maori Village. He was polite and went out of his way to make sure that everyone enjoyed the tour.

Hobbiton and geothermal geyser
Jan 2019 • Friends
Buddy our tour guide picked us up from the port for this full day tour with a small group in a comfortable mini van. We had to change our pick up and drop off times as the cruise changed their sailing times and this was no problem at all for Buddy even though we were on a tight schedule.
Buddy took us to Hobbiton movieset and we were dropped off in time to have a cuppa just before the tour started, Buddy collected all the tickets for our group and took individual photos of us with our own cameras and then we were put on the special coaches at Hobbiton for our tour.
The tour itself was great, set on a beautiful family farm and our Guide explained fully whilst showing us Hobbiton, great photos and a drink in the Green dragon pub(included in the ticket price), a really fun tour lasting about 90 mins. Can not wait to see the film's again now! We were then greeted by Buddy and drove to Rotorua to the whakarewarewa valley home to a living Maui village where we were then shown around the geothermal bubbling pools,mud-pools and steam vents and everything was explained to us in great detail about the Maui way of life there. We watched a traditional cooking demonstration with sweetcorn which you can purchase. Then we were shown a fantastic traditional song and dance show(Haka)with a photo opportunity after the show but unfortunately we were not able to experience the Pohutu geyser erupt as mother nature is mother nature but the overall experience was great.
Buddy then drove us back a different way to the port so we could see more of the area with a very knowledgeable history account of all the places we passed and the past and present way of life for New Zealanders. Buddy was friendly and able to answer anything we asked and is very professional, thanks Buddy for a memorable day and getting us back in time to our cruise.
Thoroughly recommend this tour as a lot of tour companies do not offer such a great combo tour for a really affordable price.

Highlight Of New Zealand
Dec 2018 • Couples
Myself and 3 others did this tour in Dec 18 and had an amazing day. We were greeted by Andrew just outside the port gates and guided to the very comfortable and clean tour vehicle. It was raining when we arrived at the geysers so we purchased some ponchos at the gift shop. It was an interesting walk around the village and the haka was amazing. Then off to the Hobbiton where the weather cleared up and the guided tour was incredible (and the free beer was pretty good too.) I am not a Lord of the Rings fan but the Hobbiton was the highlight of my trip to NZ! The whole day was very well organised and Andrew was a wealth of knowledge not only about things to do with the tour but a lot of other aspects of NZ as well. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone

Tauranga Shore Excursions
We did the Tour and had a brilliant day. The tour itself is an amazing experience which allows you to see two of the things ranking the highest in what New Zealand is known for. No, not sheep... but the Maori culture and of course, the Lord of the Rings.

Primarily, I just want to address how great Andrew was throughout the entire trip. From start to finish he demonstrated how knowledgable he was about the local area, and New Zealand in general. He engaged well with us guests and it was a pleasure to learn so much across the day. The trip was very long but he kept us interested throughout, going above and beyond in ensuring that we got the most out of our time in Tauranga. I would definitely recommend and should I return to the area I will most likely be tripping with this company again.

Now I’ve spoken about the host of the tour, I want to go into a little more detail about the itinerary of the tour.

Firstly, the visit to Whakarewarewa (A.K.A. Thewakarewarewatangaoteopetauaawahiao - try saying that one) truly enables you to take a step into the culture of New Zealand’s first inhabitants. The villagers that live here demonstrate how they utilise the hot springs and geothermal environment, provided by the literal volcanic surroundings, in their every day life. Besides this you will inevitably gain a valuable understanding of the Maori ways, topped off with a traditional Maori performance by the villagers. This is a must see in Tauranga, boasting both spectacular views and interesting culture.

We then had the pleasure of visiting The Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forrest. We had a lot of time since our cruise ship was docked over night so we really appreciated that Andrew went out of his way to show us this extra piece of Rotorua beauty. If you get chance, visit this place. It highlights the peaceful and natural side to New Zealand, plus the lands abundance of growing capabilities.

Finally, Hobbiton. As a LotR fan myself, this trip was a must see during my time in Tauranga. I can happily say that I was definitely not disappointed. This part of the excursion takes you into the world of middle-earth, enabling you to feel like you’re part of the fellowship yourself. The people I attended with had never even seen the films or read the books but they enjoyed it thoroughly. So whether you’re a fan or not this wonderful little village is a brilliant thing to do. It’s located only an hour or so from Tauranga, making it an ideal location to experience this.

Great tour
Nov 2018 • Couples
Andrew picked us up from the port and we had a great day from start to finish. Our ship docked early but Andrew was already onto this and contacted everyone to meet earlier than originally planned. As we were early he took us to some waterfalls before commencing our trip to Hobbiton. This was an experience not to be missed. The setting for this is amazing and the drink in the green dragon very welcoming. We then went to Rotorua to see the geysers followed by a Mauri experience. We would highly recommend this trip to anyone visiting New Zealand. Andrew is very personable and knowledgeable.

Best Shore Excursion!
Apr 2018 • Couples
We took this shore excursion with Andrew, the owner. He was incredible. The tour vehicle was immaculate and Andrew was personable and magically appeared by the end of each segment as promised. Instead of looking for him at those points. He said he would find us and he always did. Very reliable. When I left my cell phone at the geothermal village, We thought it was gone. He phoned the village and they found the phone. He immediately phoned another driver at a location nearby and arranged for them to drop it off with security at the port. He kept in contact with them and kept us informed during the process. When we arrived back at the port, Andrew went to the security station with us to be sure we got our phone. Wow!! You can't get any better than that. The tour exceeded every expectation and the lengths to which Andrew went to take care of us was beyond exceptional. I can't recommend New Zealand Discovery Tours more highly. Many thanks to Andrew.

A very enjoyable day with Pet (Peter)
Feb 2018 • Couples
Everything ticked like a Swiss-watch. Very well organized.
We were met at the pier by Andrew, who then "allocated" us to Pet/Pat (Peter) in a small and comfortable van.
Pet was a gem to be with. A very pleasant person, with the "right" amount of talking, a careful driver, and the big bonus for my hubby and myself, whom English is not our mother tongue -- we understood everything he said...
The tour was very interesting, and in the end, when we had some time left, Pet took us, as a treat, to see the beach, which wasn't in the program.
It was one of the best tours we've taken during our cruise in NZ.
Thank you, Pet.

Fun Day!
Jan 2018 • Couples
Short walk from our cruise ship to pick up point and met our entertaining nd knowledgeable tour guide Pat. Geysers park was interesting and scenic and being on a smaller tour bus was an added bus Not a lot of "Oh we were all supposed to be back by 11 o'clock?" On to Hobbiton which even if you were not a fan is beautiful and very interesting. Along the way Julie was always pointing out other interesting thngs and kept the group entertained.
