      Wonderful experience!
Wonderful experience! Adrian's enthusiasm and knowledge made the experience even better. He was able to adjust what he showed us with the telescopes and the information and stories he shared when the wind picked up and clouds shifted. The hot chocolate was a lovely touch. (We had to forego the marshmallows because of the wind and fire ban.) One of my favorite New Zealand experiences so far!

      Great experience
It was a great experience. We went to the later session and got to see various stars, constellations as well and Saturn and Jupiter. The southern lights came through on the picture they took which was also very cool! We were emailed a picture of us with the southern lights as well as the telescope pictures that same night which meant we were able to upload them to social media in real time (if that is something that is important to you). My only negative was that our guide struggled to get the second telescope working which took up a bit of the time. We had family go to the earlier session and they did not get to see as much. Just from a 'what to expect' perspective... we went on a clear night with zero cloud but the moon was so bright so we were unable to see the wow factor of the milky way but this is totally out of anyone's control. The hot chocolate was great and the guide very knowledgeable.

Star Gazing at Lake Telamon with George
George definitely knows his stuff!! The weather wasn’t looking good, with the clouds rolling in, but George kept in touch with us and said he would confirm the trip at 11pm - our booking was for 11.30. True to his word, he said the clouds were moving and it would go ahead. What a great decision. The meeting place was easy to find. The night sky was awesome and George patiently explained what we could see, using his pointer, so it was clear as to what we were looking at and what he was talking about. He made it so interesting. We saw Saturn and Jupiter using his telescopes along with other bright stars. We were provided with warm blankets to keep us cosy while we were sitting down listening to him and looking at the stars. Yummy hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows too. Would definitely recommend this.

      A really enjoyable night
We have never done any star gazing before, however George taught us lots in an informative and easy to understand way. He was able to answer all our questions at the end. We particularly enjoyed looking through the telescope. The photograph he took of us, the hot chocolate and blankets were all a bonus. Would highly recommend!

George was very good. The program was informative and entertaining. Definitely recommend it if you are interested in astronomy and stargazing. Made the most of the night despite the bright moon.

      Extremely amazing experience!
This was the best stargazing experience we ever had which was very kid-friendly as they served us melted marshmallows and hot chocolate which my youngest daughter was very excited for. I learnt so much in that one hour and saw such beautiful things. Saturn was the highlight of the night and I even saw the constellation of our star sign. Though it was cloudy, George, the guide, made the best of every moment and was very informative, friendly and answered all the questions we had. Our family were all very happy with this experience and definitely highly recommend this place. I hope to come here again when we return to New Zealand.

      Unique small group experience
Unique opportunity to learn about and enjoy the stars in a cosy small group environment. The site is perfectly accessible (no hiking). George is the perfect host, and he is super knowledgeable, you will learn so much. He takes you through a history of the night sky, points out constellations then sets up the telescopes to get a good look. Communication was excellent from start to finish. And not to mention the AMAZING photos you get to take home to remember your experience forever. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Lake Tekapo. Thanks again George.

One of the most amazing experiences in my life, the guide was excellent and his effort was tremendous. The views of the sky and the facts that accompany are just incredible. An absolute must if you are in Lake Tekapo. He also provides hot chocolate and blankets to keep you warm!

      ABSOLUTELY AMAZING EXPERIENCE!
Our family had such a fantastic time with Chameleon Stargazing! Big shout out to George, who made our experience extra special by changing our star gazing time to a time when the weather was clearer and stars more visible. He also made sure that our family got the full experience even though we were late due to prolonged travel time, we really appreciated the care and kindness! Loved the beautiful photos taken by George and even got to see glimpses of the southern lights! My parents thoroughly enjoyed the hot chocolate, cozy blankets, and roasted marshmallows. We also learnt so much from George's expertise. Overall, our family made lots of unforgettable memories thanks to Chameleon Stargazing! Highly recommend!

      Amazing experience
It was an amazing experience with all the ingredients that we expected: an interesting introduction to the knowledge of the stars, planets and constellations; a journey through the space with the telescopes; a warm and comfy stay on the sofas with blankets and hot chocolat. And, as the end of the party, a picture sorrounded by the stars. Highly recommended!!

Couldn’t even wait to post the review gushing about our night sky tour a couple nights ago! We were weighing our options but after our Airbnb hosts recommended George, we decided to book with Chameleon over the other larger companies and were SUPER pleased! George was an amazing guide whose content was both easy-to-consume and fascinating. He was extremely attentive to every member of our small group and organized the tour to have a wonderful flow. I also appreciated the cloud cover updates throughout the day, given the unpredictable nature of the weather here. The cherry on top was all of the thoughtful touches such as warm, fluffy blankets, hot chocolate (even dairy-free for me!), toasting marshmallows and a gorgeous night sky photo of my husband and I to commemorate the evening. The entire experience felt like such a treat and so personalized. It was an unforgettable experience that has been a highlight of our trip!

A highlight of our trip to New Zealand. Thanks George! The weather forecast looked iffy (cloudy) and even upon arrival, it was so cloudy that George was considering canceling our tour. However, he gave us and others the option of sticking around and we’re glad we did because by the time our 90 minute tour ended, the sky had totally cleared up so we could see everything.

Really good communication throughout, from booking, to confirmation, and another confirmation the day of. We met George in a somewhat remote, dark location on a hill overlooking Tekapo village and lake which required driving about 300 m down a gravel road away from a paved and lit residential area. When we arrived, he handed out binoculars and started pointing (with his cool laser pointer) out the planets and stars that could be seen amongst the clouds (Mars, Jupiter, Orion, Sirius, and Taurus and dog constellations, 7 sister cluster, Milky Way). All clearly explained! As the clouds cleared up towards the south, we saw the Southern Cross, its pointer stars, diamond cluster, and even the Magellanic clouds! He setup his telescope on some of these for an even closer look.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time and highly recommend this tour. Capped off by taking and providing us a family photo in front of the night sky, toasted marshmallows, and hot chocolate. Very professional setup with benches and blankets for sitting and warmth in a small group setting.

The most incredible budget stargazing! I was over the moon with George’s care to customers with messages throughout the day to warn us about the wind and weather to then confirming just before our slot.

It’s the perfect night, of blankets- astrology - George’s knowledge , telescopes and a warm hot chocolate with marshmallows by the fire! And the bonus of a photo with the milky way

It was worth every penny - Sammy

We had such an amazing night at Lake Tekapo with George! When we arrived the cloud coverage was around 30%. We started by looking at Saturn and Jupiter and then the moon down the huge telescope! Unfortunately the clouds began to engulf the sky and George decided to cancel the tour with a full refund, but we could stay for the marshmallows and hot chocolate, we and 4 others decided to stay. It was our last night on our honeymoon in NZ so wanted to make the most of it, and I’m so glad we stayed! After around 20-30mins the sky completely cleared! We were able to see close ups of the moon and it’s craters, Orions nebula, the 7 sisters, Sirius, Mars, 2 galaxies and so many stars! Truely a magical night, and George was so enthusiastic and really made the tour amazing! Couldn’t have wished for a better last night. Definitely book star gazing with George! It’s so much more personal than those big companies!

George is the best thing about this Star Gazing tour. Talk about knowledgeable. But not only that, he has a great sense of humour and is very personable. We did the 11pm session and it was a perfect night for it. We learnt so much about the milky way and the constellations. Not only that, the highlight was having as much time as we wanted to look intimately at areas of interests. And wow what interest! So cool to see these nebulas and the birth of stars for example. He provide heaps of info and answered all questions succiently. He has about 7 years experience being host to stargazing. The quality of the telescope is just as good as the more expensive places in Tekapo, yet instead of having 30 odd people, he'll only host 10 people at a time. We were so fortunate to have only the two of us. Thanks George!

Kia ora James Thank you so much for giving this experience such a high compliment! It was a memorable tour for me as well, we not only went through those bright constellations and objects, but also got a chance to talk about aliens, Cosmos, Carl Sagan, Voyagers, Pale Blue Dot, Chameleon, world peace, meaning of life, rules of the universe etc. It is awesome to guide a tour for night sky enthusiasts like you and your partner. This tour was so personal and intimate, thank you so much for joining, keep engaged with the night sky! Regards George

George was very knowledgeable and a really nice guy. We immediately felt comfortable (with blankets and padding on the seats). We didn't feel rushed and could take our time when looking at the stars through the telescope. Each couple had a set of binoculars as well. It was really well set up and organised. The hot chocolate, fire and toasted marshmallows were a lovely touch! Also was fantastic to have a photo with the stars as well! This was a great experience, which we highly recommend! George, you were awesome!

Kia ora Thank you soooo much for recognizing my efforts. The whole idea about having a small group experience is that we don't feel pressure from the crowd, everyone can get relaxed and comfortable, and we don't have to rush the tour. As a traveller by myself, I always think photos are important for us to remember great moments of the trip, I am very glad you like the photo. Thank you so much for taking your time write a review for the tour, really appreciate your support! Regards George

Our ten year old said...'One of the best things he has done in his life!'
George's communication leading up to tour was first class, his knowledge of the universe was phenomenal and the location for stargazing was unique. We did a private tour, George is very welcoming and friendly.
You walk away realizing we humans are insignificant to what's out there, convinced you!?...Do it!

Kia ora Thank you so much for recommending Chameleon Stargazing. I am soooo happy to see the feedback from your kid, hope this tour will inspire him to learn more about the universe. Tekapo is in the center of Mackenzie basin, and ther weather is so changeable and hard to predict, I think it is quite important to keep all the guests updated to let them know what to expect. I am glad that you find those information are useful. Thanks again for joining and tour and taking your time write a review, hope to see you again in the future! Regards George

Had an absolutely wonderful evening! Our guide was so informative! I knew a good bit about the nights sky and so was hesitant to pay for a guide but was so glad that I did. He really made the stars come alive and the views that we got through the telescopes were, quite literally, out of this world! Can’t recommend highly enough and it’s also great to have the chance to support a small local business!

My husband and I have always been fascinated with stars; and, so, us going on a stargazing tour experience with Chameleon Stargazing was definitely a serve and also is a must for all cosmos lovers out there visiting Tekapo/Mackenzie region.
We originally booked our tour in August 2021 but unfortunately, Covid lockdown happened. However, George was very accommodating to allow us to reschedule our booking to a time convenient for us and also available for George.
The whole experience didnt disappoint! Although there were patches of clouds during that night, George offered us an option to rebook if we were not happy with the visibility. My husband and I decided to stay and with good reason as George was still able to give us a magnificent time and curtailed the whole experience to the weather that night.
Definitely a must-do when youre in Tekapo! Good use to the Dark Sky Reserve the area is in. Double thumbs-up!

Kia ora Lea Thank you so much for recommending Chameleon Stargazing. As a small business, I hope everyone in my tour can get some joys from the night sky, so I offer 10mins free trial in every hazy or cloudy night, guests can see the sky quality with their own eyes, and then choose to stay or cancel depends on their own feelings. I am glad you and your husband stayed and enjoyed the experience. Those clouds kept moving, and we managed to see most of stars. After all, it was a very beautiful night! All the best to your honeymoon trip. Regards George

One of our favorite experiences in New Zealand. Even if you are not too into stargazing it is still a lot of fun. George really does know a lot about stars and he can convey it in an authoritative and engaging way. All the extras (the hot chocolate, blankets, marshmallows, fire, blankets) make it even better. Because of the small group size, you are never rushed looking at the stars through the telescope or at the astrophotographs. He even took photos of all groupings/families with his own camera (a lot of equipment is used for the tour). Thank you George!
