Four of us from western rural NSW Australia
An amazing experience that exceeded all our expectations. Admittedly we were blessed with a beautiful clear day that perfectly showcased the magnificent and diverse scenery. The terrain was rugged but handled perfectly by our host in her trusty 4WD. Christina seemed to relish her role and was a wealth of knowledge while also engaging in exchange of information and friendly banter with our group. Would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone seeking this type of experience.

Fantastic Trip to the High Country
Thanks to Tekapo Adventures for a wonderful day in the Cass River Valley. The tour wound up through the beautiful Glenmore Sheep Station in a rugged and comfortable 4WD rig expertly piloted by Ben. Making our way up the valley we traversed hills and river going higher and higher as Ben talked about the topography, geology, biology and history of the area. We end our climb in a memorable visit to the Waterfall Sheep Herders Cabin. We’ve done a lot of guided tours while in New Zealand and this was a standout! We absolutely recommend this trip!

4WD tour across 19,000 hectares Glenmore Station
Undoubtedly, one of our highlights when we visited the South Island of New Zealand. We learned so much about the ecosystem and Merino sheep farming. The scenery was truly amazing. I can highly recommend Tekapo Adventures.

      Great small group adventure!
We had a fantastic experience as part of a small group of six touring the Cass Valley Back Country with Cristina yesterday. She was so knowledgeable and had personal connections with the owners of the private land that we were able to tour, giving us unique access to this stunning scenery. She stopped often to let us walk around, offered to take our picture and even treated us to chocolates and fresh spring water! Highly recommend!!

      Cass Valley 4WD Adventure
Hi, We had a really interesting and informative afternoon with your guide who kept us attentive all the time. Apart from the amazing surrounds of the Cass Valley, it was very pleasant weather-wise which made the experience that much more enjoyable. We were with another couple and the fact that an advertised 3-hour experience actually lasted 5 hours plus was testament to your guide who clearly seemed to be enjoying the afternoon with us. Well recommended advernture. Janine & Mike

      Great experience in McKenzie Country
Amazing views. Our driver/guide was full of information on the animals, geology of the area and other local facts. Driving in the Landrover topped a great trip.

      A Don’t Miss Adventure
One of the highlights of our New Zealand trip. Ben is incredibly knowledgeable and we loved every minute of our adventure. My husband said Ben’s flat white at the cabin was one of the best he’s had in NZ. We recommend that you book with Tekapo Adventure. It felt like our friend was giving us a tour of the place he loved and now we do too!

The Splendour of a New Zealand High Country Station.
The Cass Valley 4WD tour to Waterfall Hut, through part of the 19200ha Glenmore Station was superb! Difficult to put into words how magnificent & unique the experience was. A Landscape photographers’s heaven! The Driver / Guide Paul was friendly & knowledgeable. Tour was scheduled for 3 hours but expanded to nearly 4 hours! Although the weather on the day was dull with weak sun, it did not detract from the experience. If anything the soft light added another dimension and made for good photography. Well worth a detour/visit to Lake Tekapo to go on the Tour. Given our experience would totally recommend.

      The Good Shepherd
This 4WD Tour of the Back Country was without doubt one of the most outstanding we experienced in our visit to South Island. We were picked up outside the Tekapo tourist office in the town centre, along with one other couple, prompt at 1.30pm. Chris, our driver, gave us a quick safety briefing, and we set off in our Land Rover Defender of a certain age, Turning west out of town, we headed up Godley Peaks road, past Mt John observatory, and after a couple miles parked up alongside Lake Tekapo whilst Chris pointed out the various salients we would visit on the tour. We found out that we would mainly tour Glenmore Station, a vast farm estate, and eventually end up at the shepherd's hut in the Cass Valley. Chris was a consummate and skilled storyteller, stopping to show off the various bird and other wild life as well as the semi-wild stock, sheep and cattle, the latter most difficult to round up particularly the youngsters. At times his skillful handling of our vehicle inspired mock terror as he drove up and down the hills and valleys, with the Land Rover defying gravity. He was clearly a very proud, articulate and knowledgeable Kiwi and you felt , like the Maori, he was part of the land rather than of it. it goes without saying that wherever we looked, whether stopped or moving, the views were extraordinary. On our arrival at the hut in the Cass, he once again surprised us by offering to make "nice cup of tea" using waters from a mountain spring, accompanied by a choice of chocolate goodies! He spoke poignantly about the life of the people that work on the stations, often alone with their dogs, sheltering from foul weather, as they drove the sheep off the mountain tops, down to safe pastures for the winter. This was a very profound, almost religious exxperience, in the company of a man we were very privileged to spend just a few hours with whilst in New Zealand.

      Boring drive through countryside
This was a 4WD through Braemar, a high country farm. The drive was boring, just acres of dried brown range grass. At the end we did see Lake Pukaki, some mountain ranges peaking out through the clouds and a few deer and sheep in the hills.

Solo traveller? Email if can't book
Solo traveler, so emailed as wouldn't let me book less than 2 and they got in contact and was booked on solo no bother at all. You soon get to meet fellow travellers in the vehicle! great scenery, even though all green, be spectacular when snow on mountains but glad it was behind me by few days. Was told about the trees that were good for land and the bad ones introduced by 2 legged species'and is now a big problem with iradication programs probably on hold due to cyclone damage unfortunately. Local birds and animals pointed out if seen and also how they are trying keep control the 4 legged vermin. Would recommend it if in own car and want to do a local thing as lake it's self was packed with buses and a wedding.

We had a great afternoon with our guide who provided a wide range of information about the area, the property we were on, the history of the area and general information about the region. Some of the views were amazing. There were also some funny moments with anecdotes that made us all laugh. I would recommend this to anyone to see the real country and have a great experience.

A perfect way to see Lake Tekapo and surroundings from a different perspective. We were taken on a drive throught the merino sheep farms, river valley, we got to see beautiful views of entire Lake Tekapo. We also learned about the birds, the inhabitants of the valley. It was a very enjoyable afternoon.

Our 4WD experience with Christina as our driver was superb and exceeded our expectations. It wasn't at all touristy - in fact it was a unique and special experience. We went though private estates deep into the mountains and river. The views were outstanding. We saw a lot of merino sheep. Our guide explained everything very clearly. She was superb. I highly recommend this tour and a must do with this company.

We enjoyed our guide - extremely personable - HOWEVER don’t plan on the advised Land Rovers. We were told both were in the shop and we were uncomfortably put in the back of a Toyota-not a pleasurable ride. Didn’t want to hold it against our guide, but sent a message to the operator who basically reply “sorry, too bad”. Also - it was advertised with “Glacier” - not one - again operator said “clouds”.

We do have 2 land rover defenders, and unfortunately land rovers are known to break down at times, and in this instance they were both in the mechanics . You traveled in just as an incredible 4WD Toyota Land Cruiser, which we take pride in offering great 4wd vehicles and experiences. Weather also happens, and glaciers get clouded over. We operate in mountainous country and weather is inevitable

We did a private tour which included Lake Alexandrina, a variety of stations, the Cass valley and river and plenty more.

It had snowed overnight so we delayed our departure in order to let the weather clear.

We were treated to the most amazing winter wonderland type landscapes, with snow at ground level throughout. We were plenty warm enough though, and stopped a couple of times to throw snowballs and have a drink and some chocolate. We saw pheasants, a black swan, merino sheep, angus cattle, deer and lots of rabbits.

Chris had great local knowledge and clearly loves showing off the area. Would recommend to anyone and would like to redo at a different time of the year too, to get a different perspective on the landscape.

We went through the wilderness of Mackenzie High Country where tourists don't have access in a nice 4WD Jeep. So amused by heaps of Merino sheep and so overwhelmed by magnificent view of the vast wilderness and mountains. Driver was so friendly and funny. Wanna try different course next time if i have a chance.
