About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- christinebX6208SC0 contributionsGreat experience, REALLY worth doing. The sky was perfect for an optimal experience and the tour “guide “ was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The experience was wonderful. My requirements were a bit challenging as I am in a wheelchair. The staff at both the centre in Tekapo and out at the viewing site were empathic and helpful. I would like to give a special mention to a young staff member at the viewing site whose name was Liam. He went above and beyond the call, helping to position my wheelchair to ensure I could use the telescope effectively. He also went out of his way to show me photographs of the views through the telescope of one area I was unable to access due to stairs. One sentence to his employer: ”He is a keeper”Written 8 March 2025
- Equivoco0 contributionsWorth the loss of sleep.I was hoping for cloud to cause a cancellation of this tour and allow me an uninterrupted sleep, but the night was very clear. I managed a nap before the midnight start. It was cold on the mountain but the provided jackets were comfortable and warm. Our guides were knowledgeable and friendly. I learned more about astronomy than I had expected. Definitely recommended.Written 4 March 2025
- Rachel F0 contributionsWeather changed our plansWe were booked on the crater experience at 10pm but it was cancelled as it was too cloudy. We were given the option of either a full refund or the virtual stargazing experience with a $40 per person refund. We opted for the virtual experience which we found disappointing and wished we had just got a refund. Strangely, when we exited the building the sky was clear and we could see the milky way very clearlyWritten 27 February 2025
- Meander092537399250 contributionsIncredibleWe did the late night crater experience (1:30 am) and it was fabulous. Marina was our guide and is extremely knowledgeable. We learned about some stars and constellations, a bit of what different cultures can see in them and why they were actually important for survival. The part where you look in telescope makes it even more incredible. We were lucky as the sky was clear and the moon not too shiny. We had a lovely driver from the meeting to the crater. Philipa had a great energy and made us sing to Rocketman. She was also an extra in the movie Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers! She was more than happy to talk to us about that experience. I really recommend this experience if you are in New Zealand. It was really worth it! Thank you to the team!Written 21 February 2025
- MidwestTraveler116080 contributionsStargazing2:30 AM tour was well worth it. We were taken by bus up to the observatory where our guides pointed out constellations and let us look closely through the telescopes. Seeing the night sky in the southern hemisphere is really special coming from the northern hemisphereWritten 15 February 2025
- ozzyprice0 contributionsBuyer beware, waste of money and time. What a con ! Paid for a summit experience which was very expensive, so utterly boring and not dark !! There was a full and very bright moon so it wasn't dark at all making it pointless. When I complained they told me that they expect their customers to look up the lunar cycle !!! Yeah right as if , they are apparently the experts so know the lunar cycles we'll in advance and just don't chose to tell you. I overheard a staff member asking if the tour was going ahead due to this so they already knew it would be crap. No presentations at all, waste of time, effort and lots of money. I regularly see a far better night sky from my garden in Perth ! Do not recommend , save your money.Written 15 February 2025
- dedon40 contributionsExcellent experience. Well worth the late night and drivingAmazing.... Educational, interesting, spectacular views of stars, clusters, the moon.... Well informed and educated guides take you millions and billions of light years from home!;! Well worth the late night!Written 9 February 2025
- stevetE67UV0 contributionsClose, but still afar!!Unfortunately, cloudy skies caused cancellation of our Crater Experience at 1:30 am. We could have joined an earlier 10 pm English Summit Experience, where the viewing was still acceptable and there were no-shows, but there was insufficient staff to contact us in-time. We would have had to hang around for several hours on “stand-by”. Disappointing we missed this unique, celestial experience, and hope there are more English language tours available in the future, when we visit NZ the next time!Written 4 February 2025
- dahokolomok0 contributionsUnique experience, but it is pricey. But you do get a refund if the weather doesn't cooperate! It was a very interesting experience, having never done something like this before! You can read the other reviews for full details, but effectively you get an informative tour about the Mt John Observatory (next door to Tekapo town), an introduction to the main stars and planets in the night sky, and then also a chance to use three of their telescopes to peer at various planets / stars. Overall, the tour is about 1hr 15mins in total I reckon (as total time end to end is 2 hours). Do wear warm, as even though we went on a summer night, and was told it was 10 degrees up there, it did get colder as the wind picked up! And you do a lot of standing around in the open. They do provide HUGE coats to borrow for free, definitely do take one. But bring a beanie and gloves too, if you have them. They are also rather ethical; if there is cloud cover, they will tell you before the tour starts, and you can opt for a refund. Note - this option is only for the Summit Experience, not for the cheaper Crater Experience. On our night, we were told before the tour that the skies were 80% clear, but there was risk of some movement of clouds from nearby. We were offered the choice of a refund, but we decided to go ahead. During the tour itself, the visibility got progressively worse. We were maybe 1hr into the tour, when they had to cut it short - the last 5-10 mins I believe. They offered a 50% refund to everyone, proactively. Which was a very fair result, IMO. Price-wise, its not cheap at NZD200+ per person. I wouldn't label it great value for money. But it is a very unique experience. Timing, I would say that the 10pm tour was a bit too early for peak-summer (1st Jan). The sun had barely set yet. I would say go for the tour at least 2 hours after sunset time, so you can get the full "dark sky" experience with all the stars visible. Do book in advance if you can, as the tour groups snatch up loads of tickets 6 months out, from what I've been told.Written 1 January 2025
- SMOOZA0 contributionsFantastic!Really well organised and lots of fun. The night sky was absolutely stunning (and we’ve been to a few dark sky reserves). Clem was knowledgeable and the introductory talk was really interesting. It was amazing to actually see the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter ! We learnt a lot and would definitely recommend this experience. Grateful that extra warm jackets were provided.Written 23 December 2024
- LTG69640 contributionsAdult family trip and Mother Nature did not disappoint. You must remember this is an outdoor weather dependent activity. We had a cold windy night but the clouds disappeared and the stars were brilliant. Hosts were knowledgeable and fun. We learned so much and would go again if we lived hereWritten 13 December 2024
- NickyB2620 contributionsIncredible experience!Phenomenal experience overall. Fun being driven up in the bus (especially the last section with no lights!). The space themed music was a nice addition. Would DEFINITELY recommend layering up, and taking one of their jackets - you’re out all night and it is COLD. Especially if it’s windy. Our tour guide - a beautiful feminine human (?name - we think Carl? (They said their name a lot but it’s been a couple weeks and many tours since we went!) … I digress! They were so incredibly clever and knowledgeable about the night sky. And their obvious passion for the stars and sky above us was infectious. They finished their tour with a really heartfelt message about humans needing to reconnect more with their neighbours to restore a greater sense of community and it was honestly tear-jerking. Especially for someone so young! It was overall a fab experience and would highly recommend the tour to anyone. Definitely do the Summit!Written 4 December 2024
- GHW_120 contributionsGreat experience lucky to have had the opportunity. We were extremely lucky to get a window of opportunity as they'd only gone out once in the prior 2 weeks due to excessive cloud cover. 60% Cloudy at first then cleared up. Amazing how different the stars look when you're in an area of no light pollution ( ie: every city on the planet ) great experience and worth it but, just like glacier helicopters, I would recommend you go in with the expectation you may not be able to experience this and if you get to then treat it as a bonus to avoid disappointment. There is the virtual version but can't comment as we didn't need to do that. Tip - freezing and windy, dress accordingly.Written 19 November 2024
- _zhfrancis0 contributionsMust-do awe-inspiring experience when in TekapoWe were originally booked onto the Summit Experience, however due to ice on the track we were rescheduled to the crater experience. The daytime was very cloudy so we were unsure if the tour would go ahead however, at 10:20 check-in the sky was almost 100% clear! The craters are man-made and provide shelter from the wind and from any light pollution. We could see the stars beautifully from it, and we had 3 telescopes (including a Hubble) to look at the stars through. The guides were awesome and full of information and we learnt so much about the night sky! Definitely worth doing if you’re in Tekapo for an evening, and still worth it if the summit experience isn’t possible!Written 29 October 2024
- susanrN1762VZ0 contributionsWow! Chance to see the southern sky in all its glory! The experience started at the headquarters, where we were each given a red light flashlight to be able to see our path, and offered heavier coats. Driven up to the crater along a bumpy path, and there were 4 telescopes and several guides/staff to help us understand what we were seeing. Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides, who answered all our questions and gave us more tidbits of information. It was a cold night, but we all came away smarter and more convinced of the importance of DARK SKIES!! The main guide had an awesome laser pointer that, I swear, went all the way out to the distant stars and galaxies to show us where we should be looking!Written 27 October 2024

Unfortunately during our time here we had a couple of days of poor weather and a couple of sunny clear days. Nothing available at the observatory to book online, so we did the 45 min indoor experience with Tu.
You could see and hear he knew his stuff, told some great stories, que shared a log of knowledge along with the presentation material and even with a few young kids in the group adding a lot of noise and distraction, he kept on track.
At $40 a ticket it was reasonable value.

We really didn't know what the Dark Sky Experience would involve as we'd not heard of anyone who had been. As friends were keen to go we decided to book for the 1015am tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. A great mix of astronomy and Maori narrative about the stars we see in our night sky as well as how the planets and stars were formed. As the promo says, "Get ready to embark on a journey 13.8 billion years in the making" and we are certainly taken back in time.
The guide obviously knew the science as well as being steeped in his ancestral stories of creation and celestial navigation. The film and graphics used to tell the stories in each of the rooms were effective - quite beautiful and mesmerizing really. The tour ends in the telescope room where we learn a bit about its history, having been donated to NZ by the USA over 48 years ago .... finally saw the light of day 2 years ago after years in storage in bits.
In short, we recommend a tour.

The Guide was so knowledgeable, and the tour was absolutely mind blowing.
After the initial bus ride for about 20 minutes, some with the headlights off up the mountain side, we arrived at the summit experience.
After a short walk up the incline to the Cafe deck, the tour of the night sky opened our minds to the vastness of our galaxy.
This is a must for anyone who believes the earth is flat, as you will have your mind expanded to the universe you are missing.

This is a tough one to review. We originally booked the Summit Experience, but unfortunately it was a cloudy night, so that was canceled. I do want to advise people looking at this to be careful. I just assume observatories are placed in relatively clear locations, but looking at the forecast when we ultimately visited had several cloudy days. I don't know how often this gets canceled, but I'd be curious to know. If I had known that this area was prone to overcast nights X% of the time, it would've helped make my decision to plan this or not.
Obviously that is not the observatory's fault, but wanted to note for those considering. They offered the indoor experience as a replacement, which we took so that there was some activity. The indoor activity just wasn't terribly interesting to me. It involved looking at an old telescope and going through three rooms with projections to talk about the night sky. The presentation wasn't that different than any other planetarium show (this is not a planetarium, however) that you would find at a local science center. It's for that reason that I would not recommend taking the indoor show. I would have preferred the full refund. For those considering the indoor show, the price just doesn't meet the product you actually get. Skip the indoor and carefully weigh the Summit Experience based on the cancellation chances.

$50 per person was a bit over the top for this half hour experience. You got to watch a video on constellations on the big screen and then moved on to a room about suns, another projection about constellations and the. See the big telescope. While I’m sure out guide was very knowledgeable he was very difficult to understand. Definitely would not recommend for the money.

Hello
Just writing to express our disappointment in our experience at your venue as listed above. We had travelled from Auckland with friends from Christchurch after reading your tour offer regarding the Summit Experience ($169pp). Unfortunately through no fault of your own, when we arrived at your venue the cloud cover caused cancellation of the tour. We were offered an on site experience at a reduced price of $49 (Normal price $30). Along with the 8 other participants we accepted the alternative offer. We found it extremely disappointing for the following reasons.
We expected to at least see something of the sky through the Brashear telescope or the McClellan telescope on site.
A combination of the background music and a face covered presenter made it very difficult to hear, combined with her international accent. At times she was quietly spoken and was asked to speak up and the music was requested to be turned down, but were told that it was automatic. As a suggestion a microphone may have enhanced her voice.
A second administrator came into the room and viewed his technical device shortly after this request and the music dropped a little.
We would also have expected a more definitive aspect or explanation of our solar system and a short video taken through the telescope or photos.
Considering that this is an international attraction we were completely disappointed at what this attraction offered our international tourists. As a highlight of the Tekapo experience this attraction falls well below international standards.
We were definitely underwhelmed and would not recommend this experience to other people.
We look forward to your response to our concerns.

This was a bit disappointing for the price. Geared more for younger kids - not space literate teenagers and adults. I hoped to learn a bit more about the Dark Sky Project, research etc but it was mostly about Māori astronomy, which was quite interesting, but not sure it was enough to sustain the 45mins at the $180 it cost for our family. .

Appalling Customer focus. Don’t expect for anything that they do poorly as a business to be anything but your fault as the customer! After booking a bucket list adventure for my 84 year old mother n law, my teenage girls, wife and I travelled to the amazing little town of Tekapo ready to take up our adventure as per date and time confirmed and sent to us by Dark Sky project staff. Imagine our utter dismay with the sky being picture perfect when we arrived at the venue to find they don’t open Wednesday evenings, a must win booking confirmation, in their part, had us staring at literally, a dark sky building! But this was somehow our fault! I suppressed the desire to be “that guy” the following day and they were only too happy to invite us onto the tour that night, because surprise, surprise, that’s when we were booked in there anyway!!! (But don’t worry about the email evidence saying the contrary) And of course as luck would have it the following evening was a let down weather wise. In granting them some fairness they did say that if the weather packed in, it was our choice to risk that. Sadly, it was a non event and an 80% refund was offered. On the basis of how the missed appointment was their fault I asked for a 100% refund. I was told in no uncertain terms, I should be happy with 80% and 3 weeks after the non event at still waiting for my refund. If customer centric values are anywhere near this business’s goals, they’d be lucky to get an F grade from us!

The views from the observatory are quite stunning, yet it is hard to feel that this trip was good value for the $179 pp (NZ).
The guide was very knowledgeable and informative and it is great to have the sky ‘named’ especially if not used to the Southern Hemisphere.
3 telescopes were provided though in truth there was not a great amount of material visible when we were there.
This was not a cloud issue.
We had paid as part of a long holiday and had a good time, but if I was simply calling in- download a star app and take a walk along the lake shore for a similar experience!!

Kia Ora Jona! Thank you for the review and observations. I guess the visibility of the sky yesterday night it wasn't that clear because the moon is almost in the 90 % of visibility. Sorry for you disagree about it.
Thank you anyway and I will pass to our guiding team.

Of our group of 8, 4 of us drew the short straw and had to go at 11pm rather than 7.15. But it was worth the wait as the sky had cleared, the wind had dropped and Saturn had risen. The guides were enthusiastic and knowledgeable the night sky was incredibly beautiful, made clearer by the fact there was no moon.
