About
National Park Shuttles is the only Tangata Whenua (local people) operator from the National Park Village, offering a fantastic transport journey departing from the ONLY all-day secure carpark with a one-way transport shuttle service to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
We transfer you from the private car park to the beginning of the trek (Mangatepopo). You can hike as fast or as slowly as you like.
We give the same advice and safety brief, as we do with our returning shuttles. We do account for you if you have not returned to your vehicle.
No waiting hours for a shuttle at the finish if you're fast. No running for your shuttle if you're slow. At the end of the trek, you will arrive at the 4-hour Ketetahi car park. You will walk another 900 meters from there, back to where your car is parked.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Sightsee240302315650 contributionsCustomers are priority number oneWe were scheduled to hike on the 26th but, due to weather, we switched to the 25th. National shuttle worked smoothly with Tongario crossing shuttle to rearrange so we could take the hike. Very much appreciated putting our request above your sale.Written 25 December 2024
- lauren_ranga0 contributionsReliable, Responsive, and Safety-FocusedFantastic shuttle service! We opted for the return shuttle to drop us off at Mangetepopo to walk Tongariro Crossing and pick us up at the other end of the walk. They picked us up from the Park n Ride in National Park at 8:30 am on-the-dot which was excellent. The driver also checked everyone had the appropriate gear to walk the crossing successfully. Unfortunately, the weather past the Devil's Staircase portion of the walk meant we couldn't continue to the end of the crossing (snow, ice, and 75km/h winds at Red Crater 😨). A ranger/guide suggested we turn back, and we returned to the Mangetepopo carpark as the weather worsened. Once there we waited for about 10mins before some of the shuttle drivers checked on us to make sure we had a ride back with them to National Park. A full busload of us made it back to National Park within about an hour of returning to the start of the track. Tip: if you do need to return to the start, call the shuttle operator while you're on the mountain. I didn't have service once we made it to the car park shelter so couldn't call them, but luckily they were waiting there anyway since so many people were turning back. The shuttle drivers checked off each of their travellers from a checklist and cross-referenced them with other shuttle operators to ensure everyone got off the track safely. All the drivers did a great job making sure everyone was accounted for and getting shuttles out to the track start to pick up more returners.Written 30 March 2024

- Dave E0 contributionsGreat transport option for the Tongariro CrossingGreat to deal with. Reliable service, good website, clear instructions, great staff. Massive advantage of being able to walk to our vehicle at the end of the walk so no time issues that you have with the other transport companies. Good to have secure parking, too.Written 6 February 2024
- Yiannutis0 contributionsWould have been great if there were more frequent rides on the way backBooked a round trip for the crossing. Bus came on time, but was named after another tour operator and picked up customers from different bookings, so make sure to ask if that’s the right bus for you. On the way back, we were told by the driver that the same bus will come at 1.30, 2.45 or 4. We practically ran the entire descent trying to make the 1.30 bus and came out of the forest at 1.38 and the bus was already gone. All other operators were there waiting for finishing passengers for long periods of time, but this one does not, so if you miss it you end up waiting for the next one which only comes an hour and fifteen minutes later. Overall experience was fine, but I feel there should be more available shuttles or the driver should have the ability to wait for 10-15’ for more arriving hikers.Written 23 December 2023

- johnbP8652FW0 contributionsExcellent experienceWe had a great experience with National Park shuttles. There where clear instructions in the email about where the carpark is. Checking in was seamless and then the drivers made sure we got onto a shuttle. All the shuttles seemed in great shape and safe. We also had to rearrange the shuttle very last minute due to weather being bad on our proposed date and this was so efficiently managed by the National Park Shuttles team. Would definitely recommend and would certainly use again if back.Written 31 March 2023

Booked online the evening before the hike, uncomplicated and easy to book. Carpark was easy to find, shuttle was waiting there. Friendly and knowledgable driver. I would recommend booking the one-way shuttle, because you arrive straight at the Ketetahi car park after the hike and can leave in your car.

Our party of seven used this service for our Tongariro Alpine Cross on Sun 31 March - Easter Sunday. There was a large number of people doing the Crossing that day and people were being moved very efficiently between carparks. The emails and information were great. Very friendly people - definitely recommended!

Fantastic hike! We cancelled our trip earlier in the week due to bad weather (freezing conditions and high wind) and National Park Shuttles were happy to move us on to later in the week. We had perfect conditions! We got the 6am shuttle which I'd recommend to get the climbing done before it gets too hot (on a good day :) ). It's really not too challenging if you go up at a steady pace and even though we had read it is just a long stream of people, this wasn't an issue as everyone tended to spread out as they walked at a different pace. The hike was more than I ever expected it to be and would highly recommend it. The scree coming down was a challenge due to a knee issue but well worth putting up with the slow descent. Our bus driver was lovely (David?) and got the day started perfectly with his friendly banter.

Some good and some bad here:
--> Good: Shuttle takes you to start of the infamous alpine crossing, and your car is safe in the parking lot for when you return.
--> Bad:
- The last tour is 9 AM -- you're out of luck if you're a night owl, are an experienced hiker who hikes fast, or wants a later start time.
- The last 1.5 KM after you finish the hike, you have to endure the indignity and insult of walking along a dirt road to your car. They should have a shuttle running continuously picking folks up and taking them to their car.
- Finally, the on-site porta-potty was absolutely disgusting and horrid. Stay away.
--> Overall: With the cost of the shuttles they should do better for us travelers.
Overall, it does what you need, but not what you want.

Wow such a beautiful hike one of my favourite day hikes i've ever done for sure! I highly recommend booking through national park shuttles, and doing the full hike. Doug our driver was kind, lovely and full of knowledge. being apart of the Maori tribe associated with Tongariro National Park (Ngāti Tuwharetoa) he had a deep understanding and connection to the land which was past on to hikers on the bus ride to the start. It gets busy and they'll be a lot people on the hike! having a service like this preserves the cultural identity and ensures preservation of this beautiful land. A+++++

Due to time limit restrictions at the moment in the car parks, catching a shuttle is the only way to go if you plan to do this one and you don't have your own driver. The guys at National Park Shuttles have varied start times (go early if you are slow) and tend to run one pick up bus an hour from around 2 until 5:30 (i think) so you can jump on the next one when you get there. One of their drivers gave me some excellent advice on pacing goals along the way to keep me on track timewise. If you are going to do this walk, they are a great company to go with.

In and of itself everything was fine, but when we finished the tour and arrived at the parking lot there was not a single employee left on site, i.e. from guarded, secure parking lot no sign.
Totally overpriced in my opinion, but all providers have about the same price and there are no taxis/Uber or public transport.
The check-in and transfer went perfectly, however, there is nothing to complain about here.

Thank you so much for providing this brilliant service! Was a very smooth, timely process for us and everyone on the team were sharing some brilliant vibes. The crossing itself was indescribable, we were in awe the entire time. It was a weight off our shoulders knowing our car was safely parked 400m/5min from the end of the trail. Thank you for taking care of us!

Easy to book. The booking confirmation included a map location with a link to Google Maps - we followed this but it just took us to a patch of road which caused us some early morning panic! Worth knowing you have to keep going to a sign that says Tongariro Shuttle. The pictures make it look like you’re on a private shuttle bus but you actually just hop on any bus that’s there. Worked out well in the end but the my need to fix the map location.

Efficient option to start of the walk spoilt only by the dreadful toilet in the car park. Given the price paid for the shuttle and 4 attendants on duty, keeping it clean should be quite easy. It was filthy and swarming with blow flies. Those on the trail were fine!
