    Ruakuri Cave
Stop: 75 minutes - Admission included
Discover the spectacular Ruakuri Cave on this 75-minute guided walking tour. Ruakuri Cave has displays of glowworms and is filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years. Points of interest include softly folding shawl-like formations (formed by flowing rivers) and fossilized seashells, which indicate how the caves were once part of the seabed. Major features include Holdens Cavern, named after James Holden who first opened the cave to the public, The Drum Passage, The Pretties, and The Ghost Passage. Tours depart every day (except Christmas Day) at 9.00am, 10.00am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm. Photography is permitted in Ruakuri Cave. Ruakuri Cave is wheelchair accessible. .

I originally scheduled the boat tour, but had to change due to the rising waters from the rain. The Ruakuri caves are beautiful. Our tour guide was very friendly and answered questions well, making the overall experience very enjoyable. And there are still glow worms if that’s what you’re aiming for.

It’s a shame the caves have to be so commercial. The concrete pathways, barriers and lights really ruin the “caving” experience. The cave itself is great, but we would prefer something more rustic and natural, we wouldn’t go back.

It was amazing to see the development of this place. I haven't been for
40+ years. I was greeted with a brilliant visitor centre with lots of information, and a passionate guide who explained things to us. There are now steps, tiles, hand rails and lights. The boat ride was silent giving us a good opportunity to gaze at the glow worms. When I watched the Christmas carols in the cathedral cave, recently, I was reminded of how lucky we are to be able to visit these incredible places. Thank you to the ticketing person, who let us go through on an earlier tour, and for the passionate guide, keen to be a kaitiaki of these glow worm caves. You are appreciated.

We visited the cave with our 83-year-old dependent. The staff spotted that she needed help walking so provided us with a wheelchair which made all the difference for her mobility and ability to enjoy the cave - an opportunity she would've missed otherwise. Our guide Mac (Mak?) was excellent and highly accommodating of our needs. She even offered to push the wheelchair on multiple occasions. Highly recommend this experience for those traveling wheelchairs or prams. Much appreciate the customer centricity!

The ticket price is worth it. I took my daughter, younger brother and nephew and they loved it as did I. Recommend this to everyone. Does say wheel chair accessible and pram, but do not reccomend it. Our tour guide was awesome, he was very informative with everything & was not a boring or dull moment at all. We went on Sunday the 2nd of August 2020. We were supposed to do the 1pm tour but someone pulled out of the 12.30 one and we were asked to join the 12:30 one. Glad we did because the tour guide was awesome. Sorry, forgot his name. The caves are beautiful and majestic. Was awesome and we plan on returning to go through the other caves. Also our group was awesome, heaps of laughs because of questions and answers during the tour. Thank you for a choice day Waitomo!

What an amazing experience this was. These caves were incredibly fascinating. So beautiful yet so strange. There are not as many glow worms but the cave formations themselves were enough to keep us interested.

The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and had interesting stories to tell.

The tour is set mostly along a boardwalk so it is not strenuous at all.

It does get a wee bit chilly down there so I would recommend bringing a coat.

Also, be aware that you cannot take backpacks (you can leave these at the Visitors Centre).

We chose to do this cave tour before going on the Waitomo tour. It was amazing. Our young guide was extremely knowledgeable and gave us a brilliant tour. These caves are much more extraordinary than the Waitomo cave system but they do have fewer glow worms. Our group consisted of 14 of us which was a perfect number. Highly recommended.

We booked to see the glow worms, but once we entered the caves and were gifted a knowledgeable tour by our guide we completely forgot about them and enjoyed the awesome sites before us. The personal history and family connections of the guide really added a depth to the tour we did not expect. Thank you for this memorable experience.

I don't recommend the restaurant here. There is only ONE place to eat right beneath the ticket box so they are taking advantage of it. I ordered my food and waited for 30 mins, but it ended up not coming. So I asked the only guy staff working there because he took my orders but he was too arrogant to say sorry. No apologizes AT ALL.
I did get a refund but I wasn't happy at all because I had to go on a 75 min tour without eating anything. They said the system was shut down and the order didn't go to the chef, but when I double checked it he took the wrong orders in first place anyways. So it can't be an excuse.
There were so many things I was upset about. One, they took the wrong orders in first place. Two, they gave me the wrong receipt. Three, they gave me the wrong number to wait. and I was holding on to that for 30 min. Four, They didn't even apologize and didn't even explain or try to fix the problem until I got there. And the guy staff who took my order said, "You got it refunded anyways. Whats wrong with that"?. What about my time? Why do I have to starve and wait until the nxt hours? The rudest staff member I've ever seen in my life. Five, I had to go on a tour without eating anything. and you have to walk up and down the stairs in the dark cave which made me and my family a little dizzy.

So if you are thinking about eat here before you go on a trip, That's a BAD idea. Eat it somewhere else before you car park here. Because the staffs at a cafe and restaurant NEVER change. They've been there for years and nothing changes. I don't know if they get the right educations or take feedback from the customers. They never get fired or anything. So I HIGHLY recommend you to eat somewhere els

We did the floating boat Glowworm tour and then the Ruakuri tour. To our surprise and delight was the Ruakuri tour led by Bex. The caves came alive in a whole new way when Bex described them. Her love and appreciation for their wonder, history and legacy rubbed off on us and gave us so much more than a “normal” tour ever could. Thank You Bex, the world is a better place because of you!!!
