About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- ylm220 contributionsMemorable experienceEach activity is arranged and paced well, with the guides constantly watching over us with patience to make sure everyone is comfortable. Only wished the journey on the tubes to watch the glow worms were a bit longer. The last climb out of the caves through 2 waterfalls was the perfect finale. Highly recommend if thrill and adventure is what you seekWritten 11 October 2024
- AlanaChristina T0 contributionsWell worth the cave experience - Kaizer was the best!Kaizer was an amazing guide, very friendly, well-informed, and amazing photo taken. Kaizer took his time to explain things to us about the cave, and we did not feel rushed at all. It was an amazing experience all round. History and glow worms are well the visit.Written 5 October 2024
- DanR8030 contributionsTour operator lies about what you can do.We could not go. We reserved black water tubing including our 12 year old who is an excellent swimmer (bought a ticket for a 12 year old). When we got there, they said he also had to be 45kg. They swore this was on their website, and given 10 minutes of scrolling through their website, found that datapoint. If you’re having a hard time figuring out exactly what to buy, there is a reason. They hope you buy something and after the fact when you’re there accept whatever you’re given. In the meantime they’ve driven the competition out.Written 9 September 2024
- ScottandAndrea0 contributionsGreat Experience in Waitomo Glowworm CavesWe enjoyed our experiences in the Waitomo Glowworm caves and learned so much information about the glowworms and the history of the caves. The boat ride was shorter than expected but beautiful. We were very glad that we also engaged in the walking tour through Ruakuri Cave. Our young children were able to participate in and enjoy both cave tours. Would highly recommend for families.Written 25 August 2024
- Z4767XPlauram0 contributionsBest way to see the glow worms! This was so much fun and far exceeded my expectations. Rosie was an amazing guide and made us feel safe and in control the whole time. What an amazing way to experience the glow worm caves. Get ready to get wet and cold (especially if it's winter!) and have a ton of fun!Written 24 August 2024
- dixontrips12300 contributionsUnderground High AdventureTake the dive and take this tour! Having been in numerous caves in our travels, we were sure to book the Black Labyrinth on our trip to New Zealand with friends. This cave really elevated the adventure by adding fast moving water, underground waterfalls and thousands of glow worms illuminating the way as we floated through the caverns. The entire experience was invigorating and lived up to its promise. Four of us are in our late 50’s and had some trepidation at first, especially when we had to practice jumping backwards using the tubes. No worries! Mitch and Aria, our guides, kept the mood light and reassured us along the way, maintaining safety at every step. They made an amazing adventure even better. Kudos to them! Our advice is not to hesitate and make certain to book this tour!Written 8 August 2024

- Compass339478216520 contributionsTour cut shortI had an unfortunate experience when I took my Mum, who was visiting from the UK for the first time, on a tour. Our guide seemed disinterested from the start, and his mood worsened when other guests arrived late. Despite the rules against phone usage, some disobeyed, causing the guide to cut our experience short and blame everyone. We were then told we could not leave until those that were taking photos had deleted them off their phones. It was unfair and unprofessional, especially considering the effort and expense we invested to be there. I wouldn't recommend it to others.Written 13 June 2024
- G4348QLjoew0 contributionsMoria... You fear to go into those mines...I was resigned to the fact I would not be able to see every Lord of the Rings location during my time in New Zealand-- for reasons of price, logistics, and the simple fact Mother Earth cannot serve as a backdrop for every fantastical environment imagined by man. But that is why this experience was so unexpected and wonderful. It is the closest you will come to exploring the world of Tolkien's dwarves. It is a cathedral of pure rock hidden from sight beneath a humble hill. Vaulted ceilings lit by thousands of glowing backsides: worms who are convinced they are stars. You abseil down into the caves and thus begins an incredible adventure that reminds grown men of what is was like to go to their first waterpark as a child. My particular tour was made especially memorable by the limited size of our group, it being the end of the season, and our hilarious guides, Mitch and George, who I am told do not often work together. That is a mistake. They kept us laughing throughout the tour, and George even serenaded us with a beautiful Gaelic? hymn. I was privileged to be led by multiple fantastic guides during my stay in New Zealand, but these two took the cake. Thank you both for an awesome tour!Written 31 May 2024
- BarryLizmore0 contributionsBeware of misleading pricingThe tour was quite good made better by an excellent tour guide. The boat part of the tour was a unique experience. It was pricey at $75 NZD though as I believe that they have experienced high demand with limited capacity. What really annoyed me and why I have marked them down is misleading pricing by one of their agents, Viator. I did some research and noticed that they had the lowest price. It is only when you go through the booking and about to pay that they disclose the price is USD. Yes, I could have stopped at that stage but could not be bothered starting the process with another agent but could not be bothered. Ended up costing $78NZD. The tour company should not be using such dodgy agents.Written 23 April 2024

- 858wandar0 contributionsA unique experienceThe formations were quite interesting in the caves. Probably one of the safest caves I have ever been in with regards to the quality of the steps we walked down to enter the cave. Our guide was informative. The boat ride was interesting to see the glowworms. All that being said if we wouldn't have done this I would have been fine. If you have never been to a cave I would highly recommend for the combined experience. Seeing the glowworms was nice but I don't think it was a show stopper for me.Written 27 March 2024
- catherinerJ6810KO0 contributionsA great day for the whole family 😊Fabulous tour and well worth the money. Our guide (Wi ) was excellent , very knowledgeable and it was clear he was an experienced caver. He interacted in a way which interested people of all ages, he had a lovely sense of humour and was very accommodating to the range of fitness levels within the group. We had a great day and my friend from the UK was most impressed too. We will definitely recommend this tour to family , friends and overseas guests.Written 23 March 2024
- A_Gravity_Man0 contributionsTHIS is the Glow Worm tour you NEED to do.We did the Raukuri cave vs the official Glow Worm one and boy did we make the right decision! A few people on our tour did the official Glow Worm one with a boat and they all said you get 5 mins max, whereas this tour, though had fewer glow worms, lasted x3/x4 times longer. No only that, you then had the rest of the huge cave system to explore (1.5 hours), which brought with it multiple sights and lots of history! Our guide, a native Mauri and 5 generations down from the original people who found this system, his name was Wee/Oui not sure how you spell it, but he was brilliant. Not only should have have his own comedy show, but he had all the insight, was super passionate about the caves and really brought the place to life. 5 Stars!Written 10 March 2024
- Roving496871120620 contributionsExtremely Fun!!This was an unbelievable experience. The glow worms were very cool to see, but more notably, we had a great group and excellent guides! I was a bit worried my mother would struggle but the guides did a great job helping her! The chauffeur they provided to the rafting sight was very comfy, and their entire staff was welcoming and made it a worthwhile trip!Written 6 March 2024

Glowworms are an interesting phenomenon, maggots that excrete long sticky strands, and the insects themselves are luminescent to attract prey in the dark cave. To our eyes, they look like aqua colored stars in a dark sky when you are inside the dark cave...beautiful (which is why they got 2 stars, otherwise would only give one star). However, the operators of this attraction ruin the experience, by telling you that you cannot photograph the lit up stalagmites and stalactites let alone take photos (would need special lenses in the darkness) of the glowworm. At first we thought perhaps the worms may be very light sensitive, but we find out at the end of the short boat ride to see them (8 min tops including loading of people) that they want to sell you expensive packages of photoshopped photographs. It is robbery. The guide takes a much longer time in the stalagmites and stalactites areas of the cave, then rush you onto the boats filled with people to take a very short ride in the dark cave to see the glow worms above you. They tell you to stay quiet because the worms are sensitive to sound but then we had a couple on our boat that had a screaming baby on the ride. The worms were fine, oblivious to the screams echoing throughout the ride, but the passengers in our boat and a couple of others were all quite annoyed. If the worms were noise sensitive, shouldn't they not allow babies onboard? The whole operation smacks of greed. If you can go elsewhere to see glowworms (several places in NZ, both islands...google them), please go to those places. Skip this Waitomo location! Oh and after you get home, the code they give you for the downloadable photos allows you ONE photo to download, which has been chosen for you. The rest you must pay US$10 each for! (We were told this by friends who bought the $25 downloadable package.) What a scam!

We did the 45 minute guided tour of the glowworm cave and frankly it was a waste of money and a disappointment. The last 10 minutes consist of what you actually expect of the tour - drifting around silently in a boat with thousands of glow worms above your head. That part is really nice and was a welcome relief from the prior 35 minutes in which you get herded around the other parts of the cave in groups of roughly 30-40 tourists to one guide, closely sandwiched between an earlier and later group with seemingly only minutes between groups. This results in long waits and bottlenecks down in the caves and makes it difficult to hear what your guide is saying due to the noise from the other groups and their guides. This is a shame as the guides are knowledgeable and probably aren't in charge of the bookings. It just gives the overall impression that you've fallen for a tourist trap ran by a greedy company who send as many people down the caves as they can each hour.
No photography is allowed in the caves, probably because overcrowding in a dark cave and not looking where you're going don't mix well, but the website gives the impression that there's a photographer in the cave to take a photo of your tour boat to buy at the end. This isn't the case - instead there's a photographer with a green screen at the entrance to the caves who then photoshops a background behind you and tries to sell you the print for $40, furthering the impression that you're being ripped off.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry the cave did not live up to expectation, as it is our busy season we are trying our best to accommodate the large number of people wanting to go through the cave. Maybe next time you could try to come through in one of our quieter seasons. As for the photos, we have been asked by the original owner not to allow photography in the cave, as well as the fact it can be very dangerous as there are quite a few stairs and we need everyone to be watching where they are going.

Took our kids 6 & 8 years old. They loved it, we learned so much. The guide Shawny was lovely, kept us all engaged and very receptive to our group. An elderly gentleman had bad knees, she helped him into the boat first making sure he did so safely. The tour was very informative and interesting. The ride was so peaceful. We ate at the cafe, a bit pricey but we were happy to spend the money there knowing it was 75% family owned. The gift shop has good variety. I regret not buying a few more things. Would definitely recommend it and would come back again.

You are taken through the caves with stalagmites and stalactites. While I have seen the likes of this before in Turkey and other places , seeing the glow worms was an entirely different experience. We were taken on a boat (apprx 20 people ) per boat and the boats are moved by pulling on ropes . it is recommended to keep complete silence and so small children may not be welcome here. We did not do the other caves as it may have become too many caves. Also, did not go for the rafting as I have done the same in Rishekesh , India and did not think it could beat that

would not recommend the tour at all. Complete waste of money. 80% of the time spent looking at a cave and hearing some random gibberish spoken by the tour guide. The ‘boat tour’ was only about 4 minutes long. When asked to be issued a refund the staff members quickly turned hostile and aggressive and were exceptionally rude to myself and my partner. The tour is falsely advertised and a complete rip off, will never be returning and will not be recommend to anyone.

My 5 year old and I had the most amazing time on this tour. I loved hearing about the history, the area and the glow worms’ life cycle. Our guide was funny and so very calming. When you realize she’s dealing with people from all cultures and all ages, she was astoundingly patient and soothing as she shared her knowledge in a funny and quick witted way. I would have liked to have said thank you to her (I think her name was Shannon) but we fit into a different boat at the end.
Yes, the glow worm float is short, but you get to see them at another point in the tour and other want to see the spectacle as well. They do an amazing job of keeping you moving and engaged. Even my 5 year old was laughing at our guide’s jokes and keeping up with the pace.
Highly recommend for families and adults alike. Thank you for such a great experience!

It's about 12 years since I last visited Waitomo glow worm cave. I had forgotten how beautiful it is. There are some lovely cave formations. The boat ride through the glow worm grotto was magical. A highlight for me was when our guide Shauna sang Pokarekare ana in the cathedral chamber. It was spine chillingly beautiful.
We were a group of 20. Apparently this was a small group. They take groups of up to 40 through at a time!
A big down side is not being allowed to take photographs in this cave. Fortunately, we also did the Ruakuri cave, where photography is allowed, and I got some great shots there.
Also, there are not many stalagmites in the Waitomo glow worm cave, with wide open concreted areas. There are plenty of stalactites though.
We had 30 minutes to spare before our Waitomo glow worm cave tour. We went to the onsite cafe. Although there were only 4 or 5 couples there, they took 25mins to bring out our order, which we then had five minutes to eat. So unless you have an hour to spare, I wouldn't recommend the cafe.

The caves were impressive and the glowworms were spectacular. Only problem was that the boat ride part where we actually got to see the glowworms, was quite short, and as we had a very selfish person in the boat who insisted on keep using their phone despite being told not to several times by the guide, the experience was ruined.
Was also disappointed with the photos offered at the end. The photos were very expensive and the photoshop job was terrible. I could have done better myself but even just digital copies of the pics were expensive. I declined.

We did the three caves tour and each cave was amazing and unique.
Most people do the main Waitomo cave and yes, this is the most breathtaking. You are taken through the cave system with a knowledgeable local guide. You learn about the cave structures and incredible acoustic qualities and about the fascinating Glow worms. At the end of the tour , you are guided to awaiting row boats , that seem to drift effortlessly into the darkness - there is in fact a guide on the boat using overhead rope system to allow you to travel through this part of the caves silently. When you look up , it is a breathtaking site of thousands of glowworm lighting up the cave roof. It is nothing short of spectacular.
While the other 2 caves are not as stunning, each of them offer their own beauty and are all worth a visit. The last 2 caves are a whole less crowded , then the main cave.
We drove our own hire car to each cave. Each of these caves have easy parking and accessibility.

Ideally, perhaps 3.5 is where I would like to rate this experience, as the caves themselves are well worth visiting and are a spectacular natural tourist attraction of the area.
But, the experience is influenced heavily by the quality and enthusiasm of the guide allocated to your tour. All visits are guided and the suggestion on their website is to book a timed slot ahead rather than just turning up.
Our guide struggled to engage with our group and spoke in a rather monotone way throughout. We heard another group guide singing to demonstrate the acoustics in the large section of the cave but our guide tried to persuade a volunteer from our small group to sing, which people were reluctant to do, so we missed out on that experience.
The boat ride comes at the end of the tour which is where you see the canopy of glowworms. It was a spectacular sight but could have been improved if our guide had explained how the boat loading would work and the way the boat is manoeuvred inside the cave. You cannot take photos inside the cave but you can at the very end of the tour just before disembarking the boat.
We thought the gift shop was very good, offering a good range of souvenirs to suit all pockets. We also thought the photos taken at the start of the tour by the caves in house photographer were very fairly priced.

It depends what time you arrive. Trips leave every 30 mins from 9am to 4.30pm every day so just book in for whatever time suits you via their website.

I was in hospital for operation and treatment of cancer. I could not open my laptop at all.

Are the tours time specific when purchased or elected anytime after arrival? David

Hi
Booked online and so was able to pick times that suited us. Guess you’ll just have to take a chance on the day if don’t pre book. Went in March. It was very quiet so would not be a long wait. The tours are only at set times so probably best to plan in advance if you want to do all 3 as it involves driving between the 3 sites. Enjoy

Arriving in New Zealand via cruise ship can you get to these caves easily from the port?

Easily? no. Like the others have said, it's a 2-3 hour trip to the caves (then about 45 min tour of the caves), then 2-3 hours back (7 hour round trip??). They are awesome if on your way. I wouldn't go to this much trouble. I'd do Hobbiton instead. Or stay closer to Auckland and do Mt Eden and Mission Bay. Just a suggestion.

Is this tour wheelchair accessible? I can transfer to sit in boat and could either lift folded wheelchair into the boat or, if the boat trip is a circle, leave the wheelchair near the boat dock until the boat returns.

Hello, no unfortunately. There are lots of stairs and it is quite dark in parts. Plus, the boat is really a large "tinny". And dark. So, if you did fall in, it would be very difficult to see you. I wouldn't recommend.

Hi,
This experience is only by boat or the group will need to walk or go up on a stairs? I’m asking because my mom can’t walk long distances, but I would like to take her to see the this.
Tks

Hi, My Dad was very limited with his walking and we had to stop often, there are very few places to sit and you have to keep the pace as the tour guides are on a schedule.
On the last Cave we toured which was the Ruakuri Cave ti was all better because they can provide you with a wheel chair, it's a beautiful one and you can still see the glow worms, better still, you can also take pictures of them (without a flash)
