- 1Meet your guide and small group at the CaveWorld office, then hop in a shuttle for a 5-minute ride to the cave. Disembark and follow your guide on a short walk through New Zealand’s lush forest where you can glimpse native birds, ferns and a large waterfall that feeds a stream that runs into the cave. Pause at the entrance while your eyes adjust to the dim light and listen as your guide shares the history of Footwhistle cave, known to local Maori as Te Anaroa cave. Once you’re ready, enter the candle-lit cavern. Marvel at the soft pinpoints of light that come from the glowworms surrounding you. Your guide can help you get great photos in the dim cavern. Continue further into the cave on a side passage where you will see ancient bones from a moa, a large emu-like bird that went extinct about 600 years ago. As you slowly walk through the cave system, note its otherworldly setting of sparkly stalactite and stalagmite formations, twinkling bugs, and a bubbling stream that runs through the cave. When you reach the largest cavern, take a seat as your guide demonstrates how the first cave tours were conducted more than 100 years ago. Your guide lights a magnesium torch that flares brightly for a moment, revealing sculptural rock formations and a dome-shaped ceiling. As the torch fades, your guide turns on the lights and gives you time to look around the magnificent space. Make your way back to the cave entrance after about 30 minutes and return by shuttle to the office where your tour ends.

- Passenger311465198750 contributionsBreathtaking view of the cave& very experienced guidean amazing photography tour. This is our very first time to visit glowworm cave. We were all so excited to see this so called "the seventh miracle in the world" . The guide Kyle is very experienced in taking photos of the Glowworm and helped me a lot in suggesting the setting of the camera, the composition and fill-in light. the blue reflection in the water together with the limestone is so beautiful. When it's getting dark, the splendid view at the entrance of the cave is so breathtaking.Written 17 April 2024
- F4254QHjohnl0 contributionsCave Day WaitomoThe Footwhistle private cave tour was amazing. The guide was super friendly, super informative and also super knowledgeable. The glow worms in the cave were a mind blowing experience and even better it was just me and my wife, no crowds. I can't praise them enough and the tour was worth the price. Truly the experience of a lifetime!Written 16 February 2024
- Adventurer3103090 contributionsTerrific, intimate sunset tour a winner! My wife and I joined Kyle on his Footwhistle Cave Sunset Glow Work tour and it was terrific. With just one other couple along for the ride, it was a very nice, low key adventure that felt personalized, not at all the commercialized cattle car, even though the agenda was pretty well prescribed. It was really cool to feel like we had the cave to ourselves, and we got to see lots of the little creatures and some other fun things. The grand finale was pretty spectacular - but you'll have to take the tour to find out. Highly recommended.Written 4 April 2023

- 101evia0 contributionsAwesomea fantastic tour. The cave is beautiful. discreet lighting and carefully developed path allow a relaxing walk. one admires a lot of glowworms and has time to photograph them. the guide is very competent, tells a lot of interesting things. a special tea after the tour completes the experience. unreservedly recommended! thank you coveworld, thank you Ross!Written 4 March 2023
- Neill G0 contributionsGlowworm magic!!This was a great experience, very personal (only 4 people on our tour) and made all the more pleasurable because of the knowledge and personality of our guide Kyle. He and his family have run the business for past 20 years specialising in small group visits (max 12 people). Standing in dark cave looking at glowworms was special. Thus trip involves walking down & up 100 steps and you need to wear a warm top. I loved being able to take as many photos as I wanted. The tea ceremony & chat afterwards gave you a chance to reflect. Great trip!Written 6 February 2023
- Veronique K0 contributionsAuthentic small group discovery of glow worms cavesSmall scale visit with a very knowledgeable guide. Felt almost like we discovered the caves with him. Very quiet and beautiful. Nice tea in a wooden hut at the end.Written 7 January 2023

- Nathan C0 contributionsBest tour we had in NZ - it was amazing! This was one of the best tours we have had during our 3 week trip in NZ/Australia. The guide, Ross, was so kind and funny. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment. The glowworms were magical and we learned so much. We enjoyed the nice cup of Kawa tea they gave us at the end too. 100% recommend!Written 5 January 2023
- Thibault M0 contributionsWonderful private experience!Great experience with a small group and a wonderful guide! Lot of glow worms, photo advices, nice cup of tea… 100% recommended!Written 2 January 2023
- 254mikaylag0 contributionsAbsolutely AmazingSo good! We were debating whether to do this one or one of the other mainstream cave tours. We were very happy with this one and don’t regret it at all. We don’t feel like we missed out on anything. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and seemed to really have a passion for the caves. He also was patient and good with the kids on our small 11-person tour. It was amazing to see the hard work the family has put into getting the cave accessible. There were stairs but it was all very safe. We were also able to take photos inside the cave and the guide was again, patient with us trying to take Insta-worthy pics :) We really felt like we learnt so much that we were even able to tell a few people information about the glow worms when we did the Ruakuri Bushwalk later that night. Thanks Ross!Written 31 December 2022
- MarisaMueller0 contributionsThis Glowworm Cave is a gemI can highly recommend the Footwhistle Glowworm Cave Tour. Our guide Ross ( the Boss ) picked us up at the I Site in Waitomo. He's such a funny guy and was always joking around. We had a lot of laughs with him. In the cave he explained everything to us about glowworms, stalagnites etc. He gave us enough time to take photos and spoiled us with delicious Kawakawa tea after the tour. Thank you Ross for the lovely tour.Written 28 December 2022

- Paradise330650834540 contributionsSupport local businessThe Footwhistle Cave is owned by a local family and is an excellent tour as well as being exceptional value for money. We were met at Waitomo Village by Ross (the Boss) and taken by van to the cave on private property. This is a very safe and educational tour with thousands of glow worms and a very good spoken history from Ross. The tour is followed by a refreshing cup of freshly brewed Kawakawa tea. We took three children with us and they thoroughly enjoyed the tour. I recommend it.Written 23 January 2021
- susanrX8762CH0 contributionsAmazing glow worm cavesWe had a good tour guide. I went on the walking one. We went on a ramp to get to the bottom of the caves. It wasnt too cold down there. The sights of the glow worms were brilliant. Saw chrystals in the cave walls and carvings. This is a must which the top 10 holiday centre will book pleased to book for you.Written 3 June 2020

Excellent cave and glow worm experience.
The cave itself I found first rate, has stream, stalactites, soda straws, Moa remains, walkways, stairs, subtle lights and, of course, glow worms. Kyle is very knowledgeable and happy to explain everything.
This is an adventure, but not extreme with risks etc.

We lucked into this tour when there was no other tours available and Trieste of Caveworld opened a morning tour for just me and my wife! Kyle was a fabulous tour guide with great stories and information about the caves and glow worms. We enjoyed every minute of this tour from the walk through the caves to the majesty of the glow worms to the delicious tea at the conclusion. I was so glad all the other tours were booked!

The tour was very personal and Kyle explained a lot of interesting facts. He helped us see the glow worms in a different light and we were able to take great pictures. The kawakawa tea ceremony was an added value compared to other cavetours.

We had an amazing time on this tour. The glow worms and cave were beautiful. The entrance and the cave itself felt quite magical, like stepping into another world. The short walk by the waterfalls into the cave was lovely and the Kawakawa tea in a little hut at the end was the perfect relaxing finish. My family of four thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Barnzi was a brilliant tour guide, very welcoming and super knowledgeable about the caves and history of Waitomo. He was also super patient with my children's constant questions and great at explaining how everything works.
Thanks again Barnzi, we had such a wonderful time.
Could not fault this tour. Highly recommend!

Outstanding. Loved our experience. We took our 5 and 8 year old and they were enthralled the whole time. Our tour guide Kyle was genuinely interested in the holidays we were all on and was very knowledgeable. So glad we chose a family owned business which was so personable. Tricky to know which tour to book in Waitomo but Footwhistle didn't disappoint. 10/10!

Absolutely fantastic. Booked a public tour but felt like a private tour. Super experienced guide (owner) that had great passion for not only the tour's experience but also the location, site and history. So happy we did this tour instead of one of the larger commercial ones!

Such an awesome experience.
Kyle's story telling and knowledge made the experience 10 x better than I thought would it be. Having just myself and one other person in the cave made it an amazing personal experience.
Kyle's excellent photography background also helped us capture some really cool photos.
Would highly recommend!!

Attention to detail with obvious hard work put into making this a comfortable journey and walk. Comfortable cushioned seats in the caves, charming shack with refreshing kawakawa tea. I have a 5 year old girl and a feisty toddler, is it ok for the little ones? thanks
Written 11 July 2019
The tour itself isn’t too long, so I think they could manage the time consideration. The stairs down are quite steep for older and younger people - so I think you would end.up having to carry the toddler and the 5 year old too if they were not up for it! It’s a great experience, but it would really depend on the attention span and physical abilities if your particular kids. Also, I would call ahead and just make sure they don’t have an age restriction. In terms of safety, the paths are well constructed as are the handrails - so you should be fine in that respect! Hope this helps.
