- markwQ4389ZG0 contributionsStunning & Enjoyable!Trip was excellent from start to finish. Rion was a first-rate guide full of interesting facts and observations whilst being laid back enough to let you take it all in yourself.Written 19 September 2024
- 930gerardk0 contributionsFantastic Views and a Nice WalkAfter a memorable (if bumpy!) boat ride, we had a memorable guided tour, occasionally stopping for looks at the wildlife (including insects). Views were amazing, as was the wind! Not for those who get seasick.Written 3 September 2024
- balajir2300 contributionsBooked different and got this oneI originally booked for Stevensons but they canceled it last hour as they didn’t have minimum required numbers to run the cruise. They moved me to the happy hour cruise. I took the option because it was my last day in Wanaka. This was a good cruise but I am sad that I couldn’t do what I preferred.Written 28 August 2024
- D4280MGstephenc0 contributionsToo good too shortWonderful really cruisey, pardon the pun. Plenty of places on the boat to chill out and enjoy the scenery. Skipper and crew super friendly.Written 16 August 2024
- bookwormKarin0 contributionsKiwi Version of Russian DollThe Kiwi version of a Russian Doll: at the top of the hill on Mou Waho Island you can see an island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island. Stunning views and nature awaits you in that picturesque place. The track to the arthresian lake is a bit steep, so make sure to wear good shoes. I would also advice that children should be no younger than about 8 (or else have been up mountains before). However, the reward is well worth the effort of the climb.Written 17 April 2024
- evets12320160 contributionsGreat day out on Lake WanakaThe day consisted of a leisurely one hour cruise about halfway up the lake, on a very nice boat, to Mou Waho island. There are a couple of hours on the island, then a return cruise back to the Wanaka marina. Lake Wanaka is stunningly beautiful, surrounded by towering mountains on all sides, and this is the best way to see it. The captain and guide, Tim, gave us just enough info. on the lake and its history, without overdoing it. On the island, which is full of wekas, we climbed to the top, learning a lot about the local fauna along the way. Just be aware the climb to the top of the island takes you up 150 metres in altitude, so it's not for everyone.Written 18 February 2024

- LN1996_280 contributionsRecommended guided island tourThis was a 5* experience from start to finish. In a comfortable boat you are taken over to mou waho island and we were given a guided walk of the island. Although the lookout and pools are sign posted. You get interesting information about the wildlife and also taken down some off the beaten track paths.Written 13 January 2024
- jacalyny0 contributionsStunning Views Worth the WalkTook the trip to Mou Waho Island in Lake Wanaka. We opted for the guided tour. Reon was excellent. We had three groups of varying ages (we were the oldest) and he managed to keep the group moving along yet be very conscious of our much slower pace. Fortunately the trail is well marked and doable. At the top of the 30 minute (45 for us) trail you are rewarded with the glacial pool sitting near the top of the island. Another 20 minute hike up to the lookout point opened up to stunning stunning views. Spectacular. I do wish I had brought my walking stick with me….makes going down hill easier.Written 6 December 2023
- sophie21730 contributionsHighly recommendA short and sweet overview of lake wanaka and ruby island. Our skipper/guide was very friendly and knowledgeable and we would recommend to anyone visiting with only a few hours in wanaka.Written 16 June 2023
- Kiwijoandsreve0 contributionsGreat short trip for all ages.Wonderful little trip that we all enjoyed (aged 4 to 66). We asked the kids 4,9 and11) when we got home what they enjoyed today and all said the boat trip! Excellent scenery and tour guide imparted a wealth of knowledge that we all appreciated. Would recommend 👍Written 13 June 2023
- Inspire173646245240 contributionsSpot the differenceWhen the cruise boat turned up ….well it was actually a small boat. Not what was advertised on the flyer. Had to climb in via a small ladder onto and into the front of the boat and a step down three stepped little ladder into the boat. Definitely not a recommended way of safely getting aboard. Couldn’t even go outside as he said it would destabilise the boat ? Kinda went near the Wanaka tree …..too far for a photo. Ruby island was more than a walk. Should have realised when the tour guide/skipper of the boat took his hiking pole. The ascent was steep and long … take a drink it will be needed. Very disappointing as this cost us $98.Written 15 March 2023

This was a relaxing cruise on a fine day with calm water and great views. There was just the right amount of passengers to make it convivial without overcrowding. The guide Bronnie was very friendly and knowledgeable and put a lot of effort into making people comfortable. There are also great views from the top of the island, but the walk can take a while if your mobility is limited. So if that’s you, it might be better to relax with a cuppa and a cookie on the beach instead.

Well!!! What a way to enjoy a few hours relaxtion. Did a lake cruise with my wife, an aunt and uncle and one of my cousins. We all enjoyed this cruise. Skipper Tim pilots the boat and Bronie provides a great commentary. Then Bronie takes you up to the top of the island for more great views and photo opportunities. Then back on board for a drink and biscuit with the return sailing back to Wanaka. A really professionally and friendly run cruise. A big thanks to Tim for upgrading us from the one hour cruise.

My husband and I booked this cruise in the hopes of having a peaceful trip onto the lake as well as some time in nature. This cruise ticked all the boxes. There ended up being only about 14-16 of us on the cruise, and we were the only people there on Stevensons Island which is fairly rare I'm told. There were some on the cruise who couldn't make the walk to the top of the island, so they hung out in the shaded area on the beach. When the walk was over, we all cooled our feet in the water. It was a lovely, lovely trip and we highly recommend it.

Booked online, then the next day hopped on the boat, looking forward to a peaceful cruise on Lake Wanaka.
The weather was perfect, sun, blue skies, water reflecting the sky, great visibility.
It’s a fairly small catamaran, think there were a max of 18 of us and we all found a place to sit and enjoy the rays and tranquillity.
After 45 mins we alighted at Stevensons Island, and followed the guide up to the top of the hill. It’s a pretty easy 15 min walk, gentle slope up, with only a couple of rocky/steepish parts that I needed a stable husband to support me with. Lovely view from the top, so worth the short hike.
There’s a loo onboard and on the return trip we were served a cuppa and biscuits. Perfect.
A lovely two hour excursion which l would highly recommend.

We did the Stevenson Island Cruise and nature walk which took around 2 hours and cost $79. You can buy tickets in the tourist shop across the road.
Departure was from town end (Ardmore St) of Lake Wanaka.
We travelled in a lovely Catarmaran with two friendly male staff including the skipper. There were many comfortable seats and the bar had alcoholic drinks for a reason able $5.
The walk to the lookout point at Stevensons Island didnt take long and wasnt a difficultr walk but it was uphill arriving and downhill departing.
Its a worthwhile cruise to do in Wanaka.

A wonderfully relaxing cruise on a beautiful ship. The guide was a little too fast for my liking (it was hard for some of the group memembers to keep up with him), but he was very knowledgeable on the flora and fauna of the island. There were even tea and busicuits on the way back to Wanaka. On the whole, a very enjoyable way to discover more about the lake and its islands.

Weather was perfect - sea was very calm. Our sea captain and tour guide were very friendly and knowledgeable. Idyllic 45 minute trip each way to the island, with time on the island for a comfortable walk to a lookout.
Drink and biscuits were supplied on the way back to the marina

Great cruise to relax. Had an educational session about the history of the Stevenson Island and how weka was wiped out by stouts. Tim was great, patient with the kids and friendly. Our family was the only one onboard which gave us all the freedom around the catamaran. Highly recommend if you want to have an enjoyable relaxing and ride and a short walk in Stevenson Island. On top of that, the view was great even though it was a little overcast.

My wife and I joined another group of passengers with Tim as the Captain, for our cruise to Stevenson's Island on Lake Wanaka. It was a lovely, relaxing cruise, taking in the scenery as we made our way to Stevenson's Island. The trip over to the island was smooth, taking into the beautiful backdrop of the snow covered peaks.Once you reach the island you go for a short easy walk to a spot where you look over the shrubs below. Tim gives you a history and well informed commentary. On the cruise tea, coffee or hot chocolate is offered, whilst alcohol and soft drinks are available for purchase. An excellent way to spend a relaxing afternoon on the lake.
