Beautiful scenery and lots of information
Jerome was an excellent guide, stopping and showing us many plants, birds and explaining the glacier formations . The walk was moderate and suitable for our varied age group

        Beautiful views
Lovely views at our final destination but our group agreed that this tour is not value for money. We followed tracks which were easy to walk on our own and there was relatively little information volunteered by the guide (who was a nice guy). A pretty ordinary experience compared with other tours we have been on in NZ and overseas.

Thanks to Cliff for a Great Hike!
We had a wonderful guided hike with Cliff. He took our family (two kids, 8 and 11) “off-track” so that we had a bit more challenging hike through the rain forest. They let us borrow boots for free. The hike was interesting and led to a beautiful waterfall, the glacier, and many hidden streams. Cliff was very informative and shared a lot about the wildlife and environment. We also had a break for hot chocolate and Cookie Time cookies. Overall, highly recommended if you are visiting Franz Joseph with a family!

Great off the beaten tracks walk
Tyana guided us around tracks either side of the regular access to the scenic overlook. Lots of tree and shrub ID , history etc.. Details of the geology and history of the area, gentle scrambles around the rocks. Lots of bird life. If you're hanging around half a day waiting for flights this is definitely a great way to spend 3 or so hours

        Time with nature
Cliff was an amazing guide, great sense of humour, and a wealth of information. We had a great time. Cliff made sure that the tour catered for all abilities. They provided hiking boots, poles and rain coats if needed.

        Walk through time
This was a lovely experience - a 5km walk through different terrains and Jerome our guide was extremely knowledgable about the forests and the glaziers.

Great Tours, Great Guides, you need to be fit! Will take you out of comfort zone
Before going on this trip to NZ, I knew with the amount of hiking I was going to be doing I needed to lose some weight and build up my fitness, this I did, but I don't think it made much difference. I was definitely stretched beyond my comfort zone on the tours I booked with this company, but I am SO glad I did them. I had an amazing day. Met some great people and saw some fantastic scenery. Cliff, Jerome and Tiana were absolutely brilliant! I booked both the Franz Josef walk and the Fox Glacier walk. Unfortunately in order to do both I was forced to do both on the same day as no one had booked into the one I had booked into and it was going to be cancelled. Without a hire car I had no other way of seeing the glaciers. I was pretty stuffed at the end of the day with doing both in the same day. By doing both on the same day, unfortunately my helicopter ride that I had booked in the afternoon was switched to the next day to accommodate both of these tours on the same day, and I didn't end up getting to do the helicopter coz of bad weather the next day, I would have been able to do it if I had kept my original time. So I was somewhat disappointed I missed out on my helicopter ride, but I did get to see Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers by foot and on a lovely sunny day, so I was very lucky. The Franz Josef walk was my true test. I really struggled, with the ruggedness, and I definitely finished the day with lots of scratches on my arms and legs. I was in a small group with very fit, athletic european women so I was conscious I may be slowing them down. I do have to say though, Cliff was SO patient with me, helped me up and onto rocks and slippery paths when I didn't think I could do it, and was very encouraging. I'm not overly sure footed and suffer from vertigo so there were some things I didn't think I could do, but with Cliff's help at some parts, I was able to do it. The times I said I'd turn back, he wouldn't let me and I'm so glad I didn't. By doing this tour we were able to safely go off the main track and see views from better vantage points. I really enjoyed myself despite being exhausted and the views were spectacular. Thanks Cliff for looking out for me and pushing me. I also thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon Fox Glacier tour. Jerome and Tiana were absolutely brilliant. Full of energy, fun, knowledgable and their commentary was amazing. I got a bit tired towards the end and Tiana stayed back with me so I wasn't on my own which I was really appreciative of. We had to walk a bit faster at the end as a big surge of weather was coming over and we made it back just in time before the heavy rain hit. If you don't have a hire car and want to do some great walking and get an education in the mean time, I highly recommend, but just be wary they operate on minimum numbers and if there are not minimum numbers, you need to be flexible to change your dates, or just not go at all. I was disappointed I missed out on my helicopter ride because I had to switch my dates of tours, but seeing the glaciers on foot was pretty spectacular and it was worthwhile.

I would not recommend anyone to make any bookings through them.
We had the worst experience with Eco Valley tours. In a country know for its friendliness and courtesy, we rather had an unpleasant meet with the two people managing it at the time. The situation occurred because we were few minutes late (we understand that is not right in the first place, but some situations are beyond anyone’s control) but instead of trying to help us and provide us with a quick solution (which was easily available), the managers kept arguing with us and telling us that there was nothing they can do. They treated us with no respect and regard. Not only did they not explain us what could have been done, they were rude in their demeanour and conduct. I would not recommend anyone to make any bookings through them.

Why go on a guided tour
Many people ask why go on a guided tour when you can walk it yourself. The answer is that the guide actually shows you many things that you would not notice. He was a foraging expert so we tasted things as we went. He took us safely off trail on the rocky river bed. It was so worth it - and I met two other lovely families.

        Worth doing
We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. It was a lovely walk through a beautiful rainforest & we learnt so much about the fauna & flora from our very engaging & knowledgeable guide, Cliff. You get to enjoy a tea break (or coffee, plus biscuits) whilst sitting on the old river bed & looking at the glacier. We would highly recommend this tour with a company who are clearly passionate about their surrounding environment, thanks again Cliff!

        Breathtaking Views and Beautiful Experience
Absolutely spectacular experience. Our guide, Jerome was wonderful and very knowledgeable of the landscapes and flora and fauna around. We also got to wade through the river and got to walk on the river bed. All n’ all, I highly recommend this walk. It’s always great to see a place when you know the story behind it.

Special walk with a great guide
We did a wonderful winter walk with Cliff to see the glacier and so much more! While we walked up to the glacier overlook, Cliff showed us birds, native orchids, special mosses, and so much more. Cliff really knows the nature and history of the area and is a wonderful guide. As we enjoyed our hot drinks and biscuits, Cliff told us more about the region, about his work to remove invasive species, and the history of the glacier. Until you are there you don't really consider how odd it is to have a glacier in a temperate rainforest. Cliff also gave us some tips of where to see some other things we were seeking as we walked down the river valley. Later, as I visited the national park HQ and other spots in Franz Josef, i kept hearing and reading about Cliff and all he and his family do to preserve the nature of the area. I wish I could go back and do another tour with Cliff now so I could absorb more of his wonderful knowledge of and love for the area.

        Enjoyable walk
We thoroughly enjoyed our walk with Tiana, our guide, who was very knowledgeable. We trekked through the rainforest, saw the glacier from the foothills and walked on dry riverbeds. We had a fantastic time.

Our transport to Lake Matheson arrived bang on pick-up time at 6am and we were swiftly transported to the village of Fox Glacier to pick up others. We were therefore the first vehicle in the car park beside the café at Lake Matheson and when we walked in our early start was rewarded with the black water being so still that the reflections were perfect. Unfortunately, there was some low cloud over the mountains but the Lake conditions were perfect. We walked round in a clockwise direction and it wasn’t until after 8.15 am that we met other people scrabbling to get the perfect pictures that we had easily got. Around that time a slight breeze got up causing ripples on the water which made us very smug that we had got there early enough to have it all – just wonderful! Our guide was a lovely person but didn’t really have a clear grasp of all the things he should have known about and his commentary was spasmodic and pretty much in passing, lacking in substance and detail. He was unable to answer several fairly simple questions put to him about the Lake’s eco system and fauna which was disappointing. You should do this walk on your own without a guide as it is clearly signposted and you won’t miss anything. There is apparently a very good café at the Lake for breakfast on your return but we couldn’t visit it or the information centre and barely had time for a rest visit before being chased into their van for the return journey. Doing it on your own also applies to going to the viewing site for the Fox Glacier which is further down the same road you take to Lake Mathesen which we did the following day and were rewarded with great views and the same applies to walking into the public viewing area for Fox and Franz Joseph glaciers – do it on your own, you don’t need a guide.
