From there you will begin your guided walking tour in our small groups with your knowledgeable guide. There will be lots of stops along the way, with about 30 mins for a cup of tea and a chance to marvel at the views of this stunning mirror-like lake.

Informative, entertaining & at one with nature.
Our tour guide Tyler was very friendly, knowledgeable and adventurous. Would highly recommend this tour. We learnt a lot about the glacier formation, geology, local flora and the cycle of nature. One of our best NZ experiences.

        Excellent walking tour
Since I was staying in Franz Josef and wanted to visit Fox Glacier as well, I took a guided nature walk to Fox Glacier. I was picked up at my hotel, brought to the office, and fitted with a pair of hiking boots. Then our two guides took the three of us on the tour to Fox Glacier township. The road from Fox Glacier township to the glacier was closed in 2019 due to a flood which destroyed the road. On the other side of the Fox River, the Glacier View Road has been converted into a walkway/cycleway. There were three of us on the tour and two guides. The guides parked the van and we set out on a 6 km./4 mile hike through the rainforest to a spot where we could see the glacier. The Fox River is crossed by a single lane bridge on the main road. You can see the walkway/cycleway on the former Glacier View Road in my second photo. Notice how green everything is. This area gets 5 metres/200 inches of rain per year. We took a detour to walk on the part of the old road that got washed away by the 2019 flood. Later we stopped for afternoon tea and then headed back to the car park. The guides were knowledgeable and looked after the three of us well. This was a great way to see Fox Glacier when you are staying in Franz Josef.

Excellent way to get close to Fox Glacier
Had a lovely nature walk up close to Fox Glacier through some lovely temperate rainforest. Special shout out to our guide Tyler for his sterling efforts! Well organised.

Knowledgeable guide. She answered many questions and provided interesting facts. She obviously enjoys her work and wants her guests to enjoy and learn about the area.

Don't let the rain stop the journey
The rain was persistent however we were supplied all the gear to stay dry. I was astounded by Petra's knowledge and enthusiasm. I could have wandered for hours taking photographs and a number birds were taunting me leaving me with many blurred shots as they departed my shot. Highly recommended.

Enjoyable off the beaten path trip though the bush
Tyler, our guide, was super knowledgeable, enthusiatic and fun. We had a group of 8 and left the regular paths to explore the bush, get up close to some waterfalls, and walk about on the valley floor- Stuff one cannot do if just visiting the park. A good guide is needed because you'll never find you way out of there with out!! We had a lot of fun, some laughs and learned quite a bit about this amazing area, Highly recommended.

A must do tour in Franz Josef!
As I am passionate about nature and wildlife, I knew when I visited Franz Josef I wanted to use a company with likeminded values and am pleased I found Glacier Valley Tours. Booking was easy and upon arrival they checked I had the right gear for the terrain and lent me a robust pair of walking boots, as my walking shoes weren’t right. Then off we went with Tyler, our guide, who was so knowledgeable and friendly, it didn’t take long for us all to be chatting away, as if we had known each other for ages! By checking in with us, he ensured that he not only shared his extensive knowledge of the region, ecology and geology, but also ensured he covered the topic we were both particularly interested in. We explored areas of Franz Josef Glacier that you would not get to see if you were self directed, and with Tyler interpreting the environment for us and explaining the difference in ages and types of the vegetation, the time flew by and suddenly we were on our way back to the office. One of the best tours I have ever done, I would highly recommend it. Thank you Tyler, a wonder memory of my visit to New Zealand.

Four great walks in two days.
We actually went on all four of your offered tours in a two day period. We enjoyed the walks through beautiful rain fores5s with your three knowledgeable and engaging guides. Highly recommend all the walks. If your interest is in birds, then the Okarito walk is your best bet.

Amazing Views, Great Guide and Wonderful Wilderness Experience!
It was an awesome experience! Our guide Tyla was amazing! He made everyone feel at home and frequently checked on each one to make sure we were all ok. The pace was relaxing and suitable even for our 10 year old to enjoy the whole tour! We got up close to the glacier and went off track for a very unique experience. Highly recommended!

        Outstanding!!
My friend and I went out on this tour on a day when the region experienced a year's worth of rain in one day. I'm eternally grateful that the tour went ahead, with the amazing Petra as our guide. Her knowledge of and passion for the area were incredible and we could not have enjoyed ourselves more. It really was amazing to see everything on a day like that and we were even lucky enough to get a glimpse of the Glacier itself in a brief moment when the clouds lifted. The team at Glacier Valley made everything straightforward and comfortable by supplying wet weather gear, and couldn't have done a better job from booking right through to execution. I can't recommend this tour highly enough!!!

        Excellent walk in natural forest
I was a bit apprehensive about the walk as the weather was not great but they supplied us with very good rain coats and off we went. Tyler was a great guide pointing out all the various plants, trees and birds along the way and explaining the geology of the area too. We had a great time and really enjoyed it. The rain eased off too for most of the walk! A fairly easy short walk and thoroughly recommended.

        Must do tour!
I recently did the combo tour of Fox Glacier and Lake Matheson, and it was an incredible experience! The guides were outstanding—super knowledgeable and passionate about the area, sharing fascinating insights about the glacier, the surrounding nature, and local history. The views were breathtaking, from the majestic glacier to the mirror-like lake reflecting the Southern Alps. Every part of the tour was well-organized, making it enjoyable and stress-free. I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting the area—you’ll have an amazing time!

        Extremely worthwhile
It was an incredible tour. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and fun. They tailored the trip to what would be best for the weather and made the whole experience very enjoyable. Stopping for a cuppa at a picturesque spot is a bonus too.

Wow, what a fabulous evening tour, I can’t recommend it highly enough. Kath our lovely guide was delightful, kind, considerate, so knowledgeable about the plants, wildlife and the area, she is so passionate about what she does it’s infectious and not only did she give us a great tour but also provided a hot drink and delicious cookies, thank you Kath all very much appreciated, we learnt so much. The scenery and nature are just stunning and the icing on the cake was the mountain reflections on the lake, just breathtaking. If you get a chance do this trip.

Excellent evening walk around Lake Matheson. Cliff and Petra were great guides showing us the different plants and birds in the area. I even added a new bird to my list. There are various viewing points around the lake each showing a different aspect of the reflections in the lake. Even the rain held off until we got back to Franz Joseph. A must do for visitors to this area.

This is a must-do when you're in the Franz Josef area. And, it really is a hike that is easy enough for most people.

I was transported to Lake Matheson and back, and had some wonderful views of a rainbow with the mountains on the way.

Once at the lake, we started our several hours' hike (with breaks to take pics). The hike is quite easy and there are some beautiful spots to take pics. Jerome told us all about the plants and wildlife in that area, and also had some hot beverages and snacks for us.

The weather co-operated, which gave us some stunning views :)

Our transport to Lake Matheson arrived bang on pick-up time at 6am and we were swiftly transported to the village of Fox Glacier to pick up others. We were therefore the first vehicle in the car park beside the café at Lake Matheson and when we walked in our early start was rewarded with the black water being so still that the reflections were perfect. Unfortunately, there was some low cloud over the mountains but the Lake conditions were perfect. We walked round in a clockwise direction and it wasn’t until after 8.15 am that we met other people scrabbling to get the perfect pictures that we had easily got. Around that time a slight breeze got up causing ripples on the water which made us very smug that we had got there early enough to have it all – just wonderful! Our guide was a lovely person but didn’t really have a clear grasp of all the things he should have known about and his commentary was spasmodic and pretty much in passing, lacking in substance and detail. He was unable to answer several fairly simple questions put to him about the Lake’s eco system and fauna which was disappointing. You should do this walk on your own without a guide as it is clearly signposted and you won’t miss anything. There is apparently a very good café at the Lake for breakfast on your return but we couldn’t visit it or the information centre and barely had time for a rest visit before being chased into their van for the return journey. Doing it on your own also applies to going to the viewing site for the Fox Glacier which is further down the same road you take to Lake Mathesen which we did the following day and were rewarded with great views and the same applies to walking into the public viewing area for Fox and Franz Joseph glaciers – do it on your own, you don’t need a guide.

We were at the end of a month-long trip to New Zealand and our last couple of days of our February 2024 trip before heading towards home was at Franz Josef. We wanted to add a guided activity and found GVET. We arranged a nature guided hike around Lake Matheson. When we arrived for our evening hike, we were greeted by Cliff and Tyana, Tyana was to be our guide and we happened to be her only clients that evening. It is hard to describe the amazing evening we had with Tyana. She knew the environment, was passionate about the surroundings yet had a sense of humor and was just an absolute pleasure to have as a guide. We’ve done a fair amount of guided trips in our travels but the evening with Tyana, no doubt, was our best. I don’t think we could have ended our trip any better or with a better guide. We highly recommend GVET if you are in Franz Josef.

Following on from our Fox Glacier Tour, we spent the evening wandering around Lake Matheson. Definitely lived up to its mirror lake reputation. Special shout out to our guide Tyler who remained top notch even at the end of a long day. Given close proximity, combines well with Fox Glacier walk.p

This eco tour was awesome simply for the knowledgeable, informative, interactive and friendly tour guide/driver. Learnt a lot about the trees, plantations and natural vegetations of the region. The natural scenery was spectacular in the midst of the rain. Would certainly very highly recommend this eco tour to any off beat traveler.

The place is still charming for all types of people. Hikers and non-hikers, the path is very simple, you walk through the lush vegetation of New Zealand until you reach the fantastic views of Lake Matheson, which is an authentic mirror of the mountains. This visit is a must. You can't miss it if you want to enjoy unbeatable views
