Everything was excellent - our guide was informative and funny, the experience of riding in a helicopter and both seeing and landing on a glacier was amazing, and all the logistics around pickup and drop off to the city center were wonderful. In addition, the service is friendly, helpful and takes care of your safety and every detail to make the trip unforgettable. - Susan H0 contributionsSenior male guides need training for customer interaction and also how to treat female staffWe went on this activity yesterday and there were a number of reasons for the bad review but I’ll leave the most important one to the end. A few things to note: - they will separate groups for the helicopters even with singles there. If you’re worried about flying be aware of this. It also tainted the experience for me as this was the bit I was looking forward to. - it’s not a hike! We travelled 300m in an hour. Some advice would be not to be one of the first two groups up as half of our “hike” was waiting for the guide to clear the path. - don’t expect to learn anything bar the story of the old name of the glacier. - expect to wait around doing nothing for most of the activity The good things: - our guide was very nice and did give info on the glacier if asked specific questions. We felt safe with her and she let everyone stop for as many photos as they wanted. Now on to the reason for the bad review. When we got back to the helipad on the glacier we were waiting about 30 minutes to get to the front of the queue. As soon as we were at the top, another group who were late coming back arrived who had missed their slot by 15 minutes. It was only afterwards we found out that this group were employees who were out with senior guides. The lead of this group came over to our guide and pretty much said, get to the back of the line. He was rude and disrespectful to her infront of all our group. The group he had hadn’t even started getting changed so there was no need for them to go first while we were ready to board. We were all annoyed and also very annoyed at how this senior guide had spoken to our guide. Another male guide was sitting down and shouted across the 30+ people at a couple for doing a jump photo, the same type of photo another guide had taken off a person 5 minutes before. He made no effort to get up to speak to them in a civil manner. It’s so bad to see these senior guides acting like this in front of customers and also in front of their trainees. It gives the company a very negative image if this is what’s deemed appropriate by senior staff while around customers. But also how senior staff treat their colleagues. It is a very expensive activity and to feel uncomfortable and upset for your staff and also, for paying customers to be put to the back of a line for employees and shouted at is unprofessional.Written 16 January 2024
- Lotus20230 contributionsGreat glacier experienceFantastic experience. I still can’t believe I saw a glacier from a helicopter! It was a beautiful day. Clouds were coming but we got full view of the glacier and had a great snow landing. Our pilot was very friendly. None can control the weather. We were extremely lucky that we got the ride on our scheduled time. The next day there was no helicopter ride because of the weather. I would recommend having an extra day in hand for any cancellation. I booked directly with them and paid after the ride. This was great as there’s no issue with refunds. They even charge you less if the snow landing is not doable. I can’t comment on pre-paid rides. The staff I communicated with on multiple occasions were all friendly and helpful. They were very responsive to my emails and when it was needed, they contacted me over email and phone to keep me informed.Written 12 November 2023
- keithclover0 contributionsAwesomeThis was a fantastic experience. From check in to finishing the heli hike all staff were exceptional. The flight was exhilarating and the hike well led by Drew. I cannot recommend this trip enough!!Written 10 November 2023
- L2353HAbenj0 contributionsOnce in a lifetime experienceWhat an amazing day. I did this activity with my 14 year old. We booked online the week before travelling to NZ. You need to at least 24 hours before hand to confirm your booking and check in time, partly because the weather can change so quickly. The instructions you get with your tickets on what to bring are pretty clear but can conflict with some of the info that you get when booking online. A couple of helpful hints. Firstly wear layers, a set of thermals are a good idea, and light pants. The team will provide you with waterproof coat, waterproof pants, beanie and gloves. Sunglasses are compulsory so don’t forget them. You will be provided with sunscreen which is also essential. You will need a water bottle - I took a 1.5L drink bottle which fit in the bag provided but I wouldn’t go any bigger because firstly it wont fit and secondly you wont need that much water. Take a snack - we had a couple of muesli bars. The team will provide you with a bag which you need to be able to fit your water, snacks, gloves and crampons in. On the morning of checking in we were greeted by friendly and professional staff who informed us that our trip could be potentially cancelled due to weather conditions. This is a risk you take when booking this type of experience but the priority is safety and you can’t argue with that. However despite the weather gathering over the west coast we checked in, completed the waivers and waited for further instructions. We were then taken through to complete a gear and safety briefing and then to collect our gear mentioned above. The team will help fit you with the right sizes. Once you get weighed and complete a safety briefing on the helicopter ride you are good to walk with your group the gentle ten minute walk to the heli-pads. Our group were taken up on two choppers. You are in the chopper for about 5-8 minutes and the views are spectacular. Whilst in the chopper you can take video and photos - I would recommend doing this on your phone although you should note some Samsung Galaxy’s are banned on helicopters. Once on the glacier you will have about 2 hours on the ice. Photos cannot do the experience justice. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable about everything from the glacier, to weather conditions and the Māori origin story of the glacier. You may get the opportunity to crawl through some blue ice although this is not guaranteed. You well then be picked up by the helicopter for your return flight. The chopper pilot was great with my son who was sat up next to him in the front - sorting his headset and seatbelt - while I was sat in the back. This experience was worth every single cent we spent on it and I would highly recommend it to anyone travelling on the west coast.Written 1 November 2023

- andrewpM8594RK0 contributionsAmazing service and once-in-a lifetime experienceThe service we received was excellent. Despite needing to make changes and having our heli-hike cancelled due to weather conditions, Wicko was incredible and rearranged flights to fit our family party of six onto a scenic flight within 30 minutes. Our pilot, Jay, was assured, informative, caring and professional. We were one of the few who were able to fly for 30 minutes, see both Franz Josef and Fox glaciers and land on the mountain. Our experience was brilliant and we rate this company highly.Written 29 September 2023
- coreyhU9442TR0 contributionsFranz Josef helicopter hikeThe helicopter ride was really good, the pilot spotted some wild goats and brought us down for a closer view. After landing on top of the glacier we put on our crampons and headed along the track with the our guide (Alex). Alex was fantastic, he knew lots about the history of the glacier, had good story's and was good to chat with. The view were amazing it's a must do experience!!Written 29 August 2023

Paid the same as everyone else on the flight but they sat me on the back seat between two strangers so it was pretty much impossible to take photos or get a good view out the windows. Not very fair.
In hindsight when they told me where I would be sitting I should have said no thanks and gone somewhere else.
The landing on the mountain was good but the flight was disappointing.
Was looking forward to this but it turned out to be a waste of money. Feel ripped off!

My experience with @thehelicopterline was incredible. From the customer service, friendliness and efficiency of the ground team Vicky, Gordana and Brenden in Franz Josef Glacier town to the pilot in the helicopter - it was seamless. The experience was one of the best things I've ever done. Absolutely beautiful. The helicopter was really graceful and the whole thing was just jaw dropping. Thanks soooo much guys!

A brilliant experience provided by a great crew.
From arrival the ground crew Katie and Drey were attentive and helpful and the pilot Dion was really good. The flight was for 30 minutes but seemed longer. Dion provided commentary on points of interest. Landing on the glacier was really special. I fully recommend this trip. Great value for money. AAA+++

We went to the office in the morning. Dre was super helpful and gave us information on all the options. We were able to book a nice deal the same day!!!
The flight was just AMAZING!!! I could almost cry about how beautiful everything was. We landed on top of the glacier, where we could take pictures and walk around. The pilot, Tim, even took pictures of my friend and me together! He was really relaxed which made me feel safe during the whole flight. Also I didn’t feel sick at all and I’m a little sensitive to feeling nauseous on planes, boates, cars, ...
I’m still superexcited about the scenery and I’m so happy with all the videos and pictures I took. This is really one of the most memorable things I did in NZ.
Big thank you to the company 🙏🏻

I did the helicopter hike with Helicopter line, booked very last minute with just one days notice and this is hands down the best thing I did in New Zealand! I could harp on about the experience which I just have no words for but I want to recognise the amazing crew this company has. From start to finish arriving and being helped by the desk staff, the pilots and to the amazing guide we had who really made the trip! Thank you Ejule you were so fun and so obviously love what you do that it could be felt through our time on the mountain. I particularly loved the blessing you said before our trip in Māori, all nerves just disappeared. So thank you again everyone for a once in a lifetime experience <3

We didn't actually get to do this activity because although the weather was balmy and in the 20s at ground level, the cloud was coming over the mountain so our trip was canned and we were rebooked for the following morning. The next day was no better with cloud covering the mountain.
What we want to say is we had an amazing experience with the reception staff. They were very helpful and very apologetic about the cancellations. We would have no hesitation in booking with the company again.
Their office is on the main street and easy to find.

The helicopter flight and glacier landing was thrilling. It was amazing to be on the glacier with jagged mountains all round. The entire trip was 30 minutes with 5-8 minutes on the glacier. This was my first helicopter ride and I felt very safe. There was a safety briefing before walking to the pad. The pilot and ground crew checked things pre-flight. Also before taking off from the glacier, the pilot did a walk around pre-flight check. There are several other trips that we weren’t aware of because our travel agent didn’t give us a choice. We would have enjoyed a longer flight.

Originally booked for the afternoon before but rescheduled due to bad weather.Next day 8am departure for 30 minute flight to Franz Josef and Fox Glacier. Landed and walked on Fox Glacier after 10 minute flight over the Franz Josef Glacier. 6 passengers in total. Two in front with Pilot, four in back. Good line of sight for most passengers although best in front seat. Landed and walked on glacier - fly back over Fox Glacier. Knowledgeable and friendly pilot. Great experience.

Booked a flight. Arrived and was told ‘flight was cancelled, sorry’ assuming due to weather. No offer to rebook later that day.
I asked if they normally contacted clients to let them know in advance of a cancellation and they said ‘nope’.
Pretty much no one cares. Absolutely terrible customer service.
Don’t waste your time with this corporate entity and instead book with Glacier Country Helicopters who are a locally owned operator. Customer service with Glacier Country Helicopters was excellent.

Thank you for your review. On behalf of our team, I would like to apologise for the lack of communication and empathy when your flight was cancelled due to weather. The final call for whether the flight is cancelled or going ahead is made 30 minutes prior to your flight departure at check in time. This is to ensure our pilots have the most correct and up to date weather call. There is no excuse for the communication you received as that is not how we like our customers to go away feeling. I have passed this feedback onto our team to discuss. We strive to go above and beyond to ensure our customers have a positive and safe experience. Once again, we apologise for the experience you received from us, but I am pleased to hear you had a great experience seeing the spectacular background we have here on the West Coast.

Once we had booked our time and date, we received regular communication from the company as to what to expect, etc. Once we arrived, the process was very courteous, friendly and efficient. After receiving a thorough briefing were escorted to the helipad and off we went. The flight was exceptional. The pilot was competent and very helpful. The whole experience was just wonderful. Thank you.

We are due to fly with your organisation on 3 February. Can I ask about the seating arrangements on the helicopter. Unfortunately when I usually take helicopter flights either myself or my husband (usually me) are put in a seat in the middle of the helicopter & don't get to see anything. So I'm asking what is the seating arrangements on your helicopters. I look forward to your response.
Written 23 January 2019
Two people sit up the front with the pilot. They have a great; uninterrupted view. Four people sit in the back seat. The two at the window seat have a very good view out of the side. The two in the middle can see quite well out of the side windows and through the front windows. The only issue with the middle seats is that you can’t see straight down. If you are seated in the back, one of you will receive a window seat and the other a middle seat. You can ask to swap positions on the return flight after the landing. We travelled as four and were seated at the back. We swapped seats after the landing and none of us felt like we missed out. It was absolutely brilliant.

Hello, you'd have to speak to the company about how they work out who sits where. I know it can have something to do with weight, but I've asked to be moved on a previous trip and they accommodated me.
