Overview
Heli hike Franz Josef Glacier on a small-group glacier hiking tour that explores a maze of ice caves, pinnacles, and crevasses. Flying over Franz Josef means spectacular panoramic views of the massive glacier, and with three hours of hiking time, you’ll see more of the glacial landscape than most Franz Josef tours, traveling mountaineer-style with crampons and ice axes then finishing the day with a hot pool soak.
What to Expect
Make your way to a helicopter base camp in Franz Josef to meet your guide and suit up in warm clothing—you can supplement your own gear with warm jackets, pants, hats, gloves, and leather boots.

Board the helicopter for the flight to Franz Josef Glacier, with sweeping views over the ice field, then land on the glacier itself for the guided glacier hike.

You’ll see a forest of ice formations, following the guide through the icy landscape of caves and pinnacles, and learning about the environmental changes that are transforming the face of Franz Josef Glacier. When the 3-hour hike concludes, fly back over the glacier on your way back to Franz Josef, where you can soak sore hiking muscles at the Glacier Hot Pools, steaming pools fed by pure glacier water.

Definitely worth it

For me this was definitely a completely new and indescribable experience. It’s something special to be on a glacier and be taken in by the vastness of what you’re standing in and the sights around you are amazing. It is not a very strenuous hike,...More

Well Worth the Cost

My 21 year old daughter and I agree this was a highlight of our trip, which is saying something because we took many different excursions together and didn’t always review them similarly. The heli-hike was just the right amount of novelty, effort, beauty, adrenaline, duration...More

Not by car. Yes you can drive it but the mileage factoring in the stops to see the beauty plus the slower speeds ( most NZ roads are not straight superhighways) would be a crazy, at least too me If you want a glacier... More
