About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- amb2rx0 contributionsAmazing Helicopter Experience over Franz Josef Glacier 🚁🧊We were scheduled to do the Glacier Heli Hike, but unfortunately because of the weather coming in, they cancelled that trip. Instead, we did the Glacier Encounter, which includes a scenic helicopter flight and a 15 minute glacier landing. At first, I was disappointed, but honestly, what we did was awesome, and I don’t think I needed to spend an additional 2 hours on the ice. The flight up to the glacier was a little under 10 minutes and was gorgeous! We then spent 15 minutes in the glacier, pretty much just staying on the helipad and taking photos. The guide that waited with us taught us all about the glacier and answered any questions. We were then picked back up by the helicopter and did about a 15 minute scenic flight over the top of the glacier, which was amazing! It was truly so cool to see the entire glacier from the air. My favorite part of the whole experience was the helicopter ride, so in the end, I was happy to have a little bit longer helicopter ride and a shorter time in the ice.Written 14 January 2025
- pkh2130 contributionsWorth a visit!Even with the rain, we enjoyed the peacefulness of an early morning walk before the crowds arrived. It is difficult to think that the Franz Josef Glacier may completely disappear by 2100.Written 8 September 2024
- David L0 contributionsOutstanding tourWe had Maya as our guide. She was outstanding - funny and knowledgeable. She grew up in the area so provided interesting historical color. On the way to the glacier, we walked through the lovely rain forest and learned about the interesting flora and fauna, including medicinal properties of fauna used by the Māoris. If you’re lucky enough to tour on a clear day, the waterfall and glacier are spectacular. I highly recommend Maya and this tour.Written 16 January 2024
- janiephil0 contributionsGreat tour of the Franz Joseph GlacierWe took a guided tour of the Franz Joseph Glacier with Maya. She was an excellent guide with a good sense of humor. She knew about the glacier and the flora and fauna of the area. She is of Maori descent and had a delivery which included comments about her heritage. When we first got to the area, it was clouded over, so she took us through the rain forest first and then by the time we got to the glacier the clouds had lifted. We highly recommend this tour and Maya.Written 15 January 2024
- rebelnorm0 contributionsGlacier has receeded, cannot see itIt takes less than 30min to get up here and it’s through a bit of Forrest with views. Very crowded. When you get to the top you’ll realize you’re just looking at a mountain with clouds, the glacier has receeded and probably only visible a small percentage of the time. We went in summer when it is supposedly most visible We did take a helicopter to see it and that was amazing, so do that if ableWritten 11 January 2024
- lachlantm0 contributionsExceptional glacier experienceThe biggest challenge for many experiences in New Zealand is the weather, especially so on the South Island’s west coast. This was the second attempt at the heli-hike after weather cancelled plans in October 2022. Safe to say this time, the weather held and the experience was phenomenal! Our guide was superb, health and safety is forefront and any medical conditions / injuries are thoroughly discussed before setting off. The heli ride was fun and the 2 hours spent on the ice was second to none - excellent from start to finish and so worth it!Written 28 December 2023
- johncZ8263SL0 contributionsGreat service, bad weather. So the staff before and after were great. Weather did not allow our flight to go but trek to the glacier and made the best we could. Would try again!Written 8 December 2023
- Sightseer289910274160 contributionsLovely HikeWe did this with Adventures by Disney and I see why Disney chose them. Our guides were Romina, Drew, and Angus and they were all cream of the crop! They had lots of knowledge of local flora and fauna and the history of the glacier as well. We were in good hands with them, definitely recommend this experience for a nice hike.Written 28 December 2022
- J D0 contributionsIncredible staff, great tour - definitely recommend! We booked the Heli Hike, but unfortunately, due to weather, this had to be cancelled as the helicopter could not safely fly up to the glacier and land us there. It's clear that they take safety very seriously (which I really appreciate), and this cancellation was communicated clearly and promptly once the weather changed. They offered to re-book us for the following day, which wasn't possible given our travel schedule, or to attend the valley walking hike with a partial reimbursement as an alternative. We opted to join the early morning valley hike, and I am so glad that we did! The tour guides were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. They carefully assessed everyone's outfits, then offered appropriate equipment, jackets, gloves, and gear to anyone who they thought needed it and encouraged people to be prepared. The waterproof jacket that they loaned to me was amazing! I have no idea what brand it was, and I wish I'd taken a picture of the logo because I would love to get one! (it rained the entire walk, but the jacket kept me bone dry, and it was awesome) While I'm sad we didn't get to ice climb and check out the glacier, I was really impressed with the valley tour, and we ended up having a lot of fun. I learned a lot about NZs natural plants, history, and local animals. The guides kept a close eye on everyone, regularly did head counts, and made sure that everyone was safe. They were very accommodating, very careful, very prepared, and just all-around excellent tour guides. If you get the chance to stop in at Franz Josef, I highly recommend taking one of their tours.Written 22 August 2022
- cunnington970 contributionsFamily funThis was a fantastic experience for our family of 5. Our guide, Jack, was very knowledgeable and engaging. We had around 2 hours on the glacier, and Jack added in features such as crawling through an ice cave which our kids loved.Written 15 January 2021

- shandapanda19930 contributionsAwesome fun!Went on the 2 hour glacier hike and it was absolutely breathtaking and amazing. Well worth the four day wait for the weather to allow but then I got an absolutely stunner of a day. My guide was fantastic and the people I met was fun and awesome. Highly recommend doing this Atleast once! Well worth the money. Got heaps of photo opportunities too at no extra cost which is pretty special considering other places.Written 11 November 2020
- annedunne240 contributionsTruly amazing experienceThe helihike was simply amazing. The Franz Joseph Guide Comnpnay were so professional, safety conscience and covered every aspect of the tour. We well kitted out with gloves, jackets beanie hats and cripons for our shoes. I could not recommend Chris our guide highly enough, he ticked all the boxes, he was super, meticulous regarding our safety and made a fun and informative guide. The helicoptor trip was awesome and the walk on the glaciers was truly incredible. One of the high lights of our trip to New Zealand. We also got free entrance to the thermal baths after our hike which was so relaxing and enjoyable.Written 30 March 2020

So lucky to get a weather window - trip was interesting as well as exciting, Rebekah the guide was knowledgeable and the whole company felt organised and reliable. Good size group (11). An amazing experience! The entire process was so smooth and all the staff, from check in all the way through to guides, were knowledgable and friendly.
We booked last minute approx 2 days before the departure date. The website was initially slow to take payment and remained on the loading screen, but we got there in the end. The team were well responsive via email.
On arrival, there is free parking on the main street and a tap to fill up water bottles. We were allocated into groups of 11, which was split across 2 helicopters. Our guide, Yula, was so fun and patient. As the first group onto the ice, we were able to stop at a sheltered part of the glacier alone and watch the sunrise over the mountain whilst she told us an indigineous origin story about the glacier - magical!
Try to factor in some breathing room into your itinerary. Some flights in the afternoon were cut short due to incoming cloud but the team are very good at communicating this as a possibility throughout. They do everything they can to maximise the experience safely.
I would thoroughly recommend this experience to anyone!

This adventure was so worth the money and effort to get here and do it. We were very fortunate to have the time to rebook when our first attempt didn’t go ahead due to bad weather. I highly recommend planning a few days in FJ and booking this for the first day so that you have the chance to rebook if things don’t go to plan.
I was so impressed with the safety procedures followed by this company. We knew we were in good hands when at check in they spoke to each individual who had flagged any kind of health condition to ensure that they can cater to your needs and keep you safe – from knee injuries to high blood pressure. And if you are on medication for serious health concerns, take it with you in case the weather changes quickly and you have to spend overnight on the ice (no, I’m not joking).
After our safety briefing and kitting up, we walked to the helipad where our group of 11 was split into a 6 and a 5 to be transferred in two helicopters to the glacier. They delivered us onto the massive ice formation, James Bond style, but safely! Our guide, Jimmy, knew this area intimately, his informed commentary allowing us plenty of time to pause and marvel in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The regular communication between guide team members increased when the cloud began to quickly descend, and soon we received instructions to return to the landing point before the weather prevented the helicopters from transporting us off the ice. No one wanted to spend overnight on the glacier, even though the guides are fully prepared for that possibility – tents and supplies stored in waterproof crates in an ice nook at the ready!
The entire experience was thrilling, one of the most unforgettable of our many travels.

This might be the most amazing thing my wife and I have ever done. The flights to/from the glacier were stunning. Walking around the glacier was absolutely mind-blowing. The formations of the ice made it feel like you were on another planet. Everything we saw felt like the coolest thing we had ever seen. The crampons made it so easy to navigate the icy terrain. Our guide, Abbie, was fabulous, confident, and full of knowledge. We were lucky to be in a small group as well so we could move faster as a group, see more, and do more exciting things. From the start, everything the company did put us at ease. There were lots of safety measures in place and we didn’t need any of them. Going early in the winter (we were in the 8:00 group) allowed us to see the glacier in the shade and then change as the sun came up. Highly recommend this trip - we were so incredibly lucky to have done it!

The staff, including the helicopter pilot, were incredibly good communicators, I give them an easy 5 out of 5. They got us to and fro the glacier safely despite me throwing a wrench into their carefully orchestrated helicopter loading process, I had to visit the toilet literally as you could hear the second chopper inbound. They waited for me and for that I am eternally thankful. Once on the glacier Amy showed her stuff, encouraging me every step of the way, my left knee in weak and I am claustrophobic I needed much encouragement. Amy reminded me of something Carl Sagan once said, when you are in love you want to tell the world, well Amy loves the FJ Glacier and now I can see why. Thanks Amy!

Was meant to be on the Heli hike.
Got cancelled when we arrived at the check in desk.
Offered a heli experience up to the glacier instead.
Underwhelming for the cost.
You only get to stand in one spot on the glacier and aren’t able to move around.
Couldn’t even fly up for the view at the top of glacier.
Admittedly because the weather came in and safety has to come first, but for the cost of the trip, my advice would be to wait until you get a perfect weather window or cancel and get a refund.

Kia ora Gareth,
We are truly sorry that the weather meant for cancellation of your tour. It really is a double-edged sword with the damp environment providing our beautiful glacier, however also being a restriction on our tours! We try our best to set expectations for the alternative tour that we will not be able to do the hike, and will just be a landing on the glacier to get an opportunity to experience Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere. We understand though that this is not for everyone, and the hike is what you signed up for. Hopefully we can get you up for our full hike on your next visit to Aotearoa. Safe travels on your next adventure and ma te wa.

Fantastic views, great heli ride, however I'd not call it a hike. We did a total of 5mins 30s of walking over a total of 750m, while on the ice for over 2hrs. Most of the time was spent stopping after a few steps for the guide to hack at the ice, despite a guide ahead of us already carving out a path. The group was all young and able, so it wasn't due to lack of ability. We saw no caves like on the photos advertised.
We sadly also didn't get the experience others noted of lots of facts and info about the glacier by the guide.
Unfortunately, came away thinking we hadn't got our moneys worth, and should've picked the cheaper option without the 'hike'.

This company who also run the hot pools gave terrible customer service. My experience: as soon as myself and my tour group paid for our trip and the last person in line handed their money over they suddenly declared it cancelled. They told us if we had paid by card ( which most of us did as carrying around hundreds of dollars cash is dangerous, especially when backpacking) we will have to wait up to 10 working days to get our money back - no exceptions. As a backpacker on a tight budget that's a huge chunk of money missing that myself and my friends didn't even see back in our bank accounts until we returned to our home country as this was the end of our trip. I explained this and asked nicely if they could make an exception and refund in another way such as cash or simply cancel the purchase so we all who paid with our cards don't miss out on the other options available for our short stay in the area, but the woman on the desk refused in the most inconsiderate manner possible, seemingly enjoying ruining our chances to see anything with another company that day. Considering how many people they went through just in my line for that flight time that day and how expensive these tours are that's a nice kitty in the bank to earn interest off by the end of each day that could sit there for two weeks for tours they didn't bother waiting a few minutes longer to be sure they were even running. They could have helped out in another way - they just didn't care to, saying 'company policy' doesn't allow them and when we asked to speak to the manager they refused. My suggestion to future travelers who are keen to go with this company is to pay by cash so they have to refund you immediately. Go with anyone else if you can. That day other tours in the area still went ahead and were much more sensibly run - cleverly saying they take payment at the end of the tour so if they couldn't complete it all due to sudden bad weather you would only pay for the portion you did, or not at all. This company could learn from their competitors and do the same.

Kia Ora emmamV2877ON,
Thank you for your review.
I'm extremely sorry to hear that you did not have the best experience with our staff and did not manage to get on a Glacier Heli Hike.
Unfortunately the weather is constantly changing here on the West Coast and as the Heli Hike is such a long tour, being 3.5hours long in total we do need a weather gap of 3.5 - 4 hours so we can get everyone back down off the ice safetly. The Safety of all guests and staff are our number one prioity here and it is never our intention to not go ahead with the tour, although sometimes we do have to make those hard descions to cancel last minute.
In regards to the payment, we do refund back onto the card you have paid with while you are there or we send it to our accounts team for them to process it if needed. However with bank transfers it can always take up to 10 buisness days to process into your bank account and unfortunately we have no control over that.
If you do not pay by cash we are unable to refund in cash as we do not hold a huge amount of money on site for people unless they have paid by cash.
Due to the large number of people we see through our business daily we cannot let people on tours without payment first as there is no way to control taking payment when everyone arrives back at once and expect everyone to come back to pay. Most Scenic flight companys do take payment for their flight after the tour has been as that is always a maximum of six people which is a lot easier to control and keep track of compared to our large trip numbers.
Again I am really sorry you did not have the best experience with us here in Franz Josef Glacier it is never our intentions for anyone to leave feeling like this.
If you would like to discuss anything further please contact me directly on aimee.blackburn@franzjosefglacier.com.
Ngā mihi,
Aimee

One important thing to know is that this activity is extremely weather dependent and it is common that flights are cancelled. Since weather can change quickly, they can sometimes be cancelled with short notice. No one can control the weather, but it's good to be mentally prepared for this so that you can plan accordingly and don't get too disappointed if you have to change your plans. It is generally recommended to allow a couple of days in Franz Josef to increase the probability of getting on a flight. Also I recommend to book the earliest possible time during your visit (i.e. if you are staying for three days book the flight for the first day!) to allow for more tries if the weather isn't cooperating.
We had only allowed two nights in Franz Josef and were super anxious about the weather. Unfortunately our scheduled flight was cancelled which we learnt when arriving for check in. We got rebooked to the next available flight which was 11.15 the morning after. And luckily this flight wasn't cancelled! This was actually the first flight to go up on the glacier in almost a week just to illustrate what it can be like if you're unlucky.
The helicopter ride was pretty short, about 5 min, but truly incredible! What spectacular views and just an awesome feeling flying up on the glacier. We then trekked on the glacier for maybe around 1,5-2 hours, and the trek was being carved out as we were walking. We got to squeeze ourselves through ice cracks and also go through a cave. Our guide was awesome, very knowledgeable and friendly.
You are provided with pants, jacket, shoes, crampons and a small bag where you can put some small items. You are not allowed to bring your own bag so you can't bring too much stuff up. Don't bring your large camera or selfie stick etc. I would recommend wearing some sports pants (like tights), sports t-shirt and a warm sweater as well as gloves. They also recommend sunglasses although it wasn't neccessary when we were there. And don't forget sunscreen, your waterbottle and a small snack.
In this package, entrance to the hot pools was included. The hot pools are fairly average, but since it's included it can be a nice finale to your Franz Josef adventure. Enjoy! This was one of the highlights of our New Zealand trips.

We had a fantastic time from start to finish. The staff were kind and helpful (I think we went to the booking building instead of the check in building at first and were quickly assisted to the correct location).
Cale, our guide, was dedicated to safety, informed about all glacier related questions, and incredibly delightful to be around. This felt like a once in a lifetime type experience and we're so glad we were able to go!
Our best tip would be to try to be at the back of the tour group for at least one portion of the hike, because you can take a lot of fun pictures of yourselves and the glaciers while waiting for the others in your group to climb :)

We were hesitant to book due to cost but so happy we did! We had such an amazing experience & the guides are so professional and amazing. We unexpectedly had to stay on the Glacier longer than planned due to weather as it’s often unpredictable on the Glacier and the guides were remarkable. They went above and beyond with their planning, ensuring we stayed warm and safe waiting for the weather to pass. Jule was our guide during the hike and shared a lot of amazing facts about the Glacier and made our hike interactive and fun!

What company do you recommend using? Also do they check passports or IDs to confirm children’s age? Thank you!

Hoping to book this for Mid-february. How many days did you book in Franz Josef incase for weather reasons?
What was your back up plan incase bad weather led to a cancellation?

While the hikes and helicopter ride all sound amazing, my 9 year old son especially wants to see/touch snow. Is this part of the experience or is it just walking on frozen ice? We will be there at the end of March.

We did the helicopter flight, and landed on the snow... it was not the help-hike adventure, just the glazier view with landing. ask the booking desk

Would like to know where the pick up is from please ?
Written 9 November 2019
Do you mean where is the helipad? It’s a short walk from the information centre and centre of Franz Josef Village. We stayed over in the village so didn’t need a pick up from our hotel so if that is what you meant then you will need to enquire directly with the organisers. Hope this helps

What is the best time of day to take a helicopter ride?
Written 20 October 2019
I booked for the morning - the first tour of the day. From my understanding this is the better time of day to go as low clouds can build in as the day goes on.

hello, we are a family group of seven people from Hong Kong.
there are 4 elderly we accompany with,
just want to know if they feel tired to walk during the trip,
is it possible to wait there to wait for the trip ends?
is it a round trip that we drop off from the helicopter
and after about 2 hours we wait for the helicopter at the same place?
THANKS!
Written 17 October 2019
The helicopter takes off from a spot near the office, and lands on the glacier. After the walk, the helicopter would pick up up from the same spot on the glacier, and take you back to ground level near the office.
Best to check with the organisers of the trip, if people can wait by themselves unattended if they feel tired on the glacier.

Hello, if the booking is cancelled due to bad weather on the day, is a full refund given ? Many thanks
Written 22 August 2019
Yes, they gave me a full refund, on-site, and it was immediately after they announced the cancellation.

Hi, I am interested in taking the family on the Heli-Hike Franz Josef Glacier Walk in early December to experience a hike through the snow caves and crevices. Some of the information says its best to go on the Heli-Hike tour in winter, if I book the tour in December will there still be ice caves to explore or do they start melting? Also is there a high chance of cancellation due to unpredictable rainy weather in December? Thanks
Written 21 July 2019
Best to check with the provider. Remember Southern Hemisphere so December is not winter there. Ice changes daily so what you explore will depend on condition. All year round experience so will still be really good. Totally weather dependent so again, just down to conditions when you are there. Amazing experience of you get up there.

Hi, I am curious about the arrangements for toilet breaks. How will these be managed? I assume there will be people who will need to heed the call of nature during the 3 hour hike.
Also, I am not terribly fit. How fit do you need to be? Is an afternoon hike really less strenuous? Thanks.
Written 23 June 2019
I think the challenge is not so much an endurance or strength one as it is technical. If you can handle a hike through the woods for a few hours you've probably got the fitness level required. If you have any balance issues, difficulty climbing or perhaps claustrophobia, maybe this one's not for you.
As for the call of nature, just make sure you go before getting on the helicopter. Oh, and don't drink too much coffee before hand!
