      Misleading
Fantastic views, great heli ride, however I'd not call it a hike. We did a total of 5mins 30s of walking over a total of 750m, while on the ice for over 2hrs. Most of the time was spent stopping after a few steps for the guide to hack at the ice, despite a guide ahead of us already carving out a path. The group was all young and able, so it wasn't due to lack of ability. We saw no caves like on the photos advertised. We sadly also didn't get the experience others noted of lots of facts and info about the glacier by the guide. Unfortunately, came away thinking we hadn't got our moneys worth, and should've picked the cheaper option without the 'hike'.

      Excellent experience! Definitely recommend
This was amazing, from the helicopter ride to tramping on the glacier. Our guide, Jale, was excellent; from ensuring our safety to ace picking out the trail thru the ice. Would definitely recommend it!

Amazing Helicopter Experience over Franz Josef Glacier 🚁🧊
We were scheduled to do the Glacier Heli Hike, but unfortunately because of the weather coming in, they cancelled that trip. Instead, we did the Glacier Encounter, which includes a scenic helicopter flight and a 15 minute glacier landing. At first, I was disappointed, but honestly, what we did was awesome, and I don’t think I needed to spend an additional 2 hours on the ice. The flight up to the glacier was a little under 10 minutes and was gorgeous! We then spent 15 minutes in the glacier, pretty much just staying on the helipad and taking photos. The guide that waited with us taught us all about the glacier and answered any questions. We were then picked back up by the helicopter and did about a 15 minute scenic flight over the top of the glacier, which was amazing! It was truly so cool to see the entire glacier from the air. My favorite part of the whole experience was the helicopter ride, so in the end, I was happy to have a little bit longer helicopter ride and a shorter time in the ice.

Wait for a perfect weather window or save your money.
Was meant to be on the Heli hike. Got cancelled when we arrived at the check in desk. Offered a heli experience up to the glacier instead. Underwhelming for the cost. You only get to stand in one spot on the glacier and aren’t able to move around. Couldn’t even fly up for the view at the top of glacier. Admittedly because the weather came in and safety has to come first, but for the cost of the trip, my advice would be to wait until you get a perfect weather window or cancel and get a refund.

      Most amazing experience ever!
This might be the most amazing thing my wife and I have ever done. The flights to/from the glacier were stunning. Walking around the glacier was absolutely mind-blowing. The formations of the ice made it feel like you were on another planet. Everything we saw felt like the coolest thing we had ever seen. The crampons made it so easy to navigate the icy terrain. Our guide, Abbie, was fabulous, confident, and full of knowledge. We were lucky to be in a small group as well so we could move faster as a group, see more, and do more exciting things. From the start, everything the company did put us at ease. There were lots of safety measures in place and we didn’t need any of them. Going early in the winter (we were in the 8:00 group) allowed us to see the glacier in the shade and then change as the sun came up. Highly recommend this trip - we were so incredibly lucky to have done it!

      Amazing experience 🥰
Honestly the best and most surreal experience from my time in New Zealand. The tour guide was super knowledgable and friendly. Had beautiful clear skies up on the glacier and could see all the way down to the coast. Absolutely worth the price paid for it! 🥰

      Best Life Experience
One of the best experiences I have ever had. Going up in a helicopter and then doing a hike in the ice for about 90 minutes in a group. The views are breathtaking and so unique. I have never done anything like this in my life and it surpassed expectations. All the staff were also lovely and all clearly love what they do, which makes the experience even better. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting NZ!

      Flying high
We did the heli-hike on a superb day with clear blue skies. The entire operation is well organized and focused on the safety and satisfaction of the clients. The short flight up to the glacier does not disappoint; views are stunning. Our guide, James, an experienced outdoorsman, took care to ensure that the entire group felt secure regardless of their experience in the mountains. We moved a bit faster than the normal program prescribes, and so James took us a bit "off piste" (but not too far)--that was fun and rewarding for all of us. A great experience.

      Great Experience
We recently did the Franz Josef Glacier HeliHike tour and had a fantastic guide Amy. I was nervous about being on the ice, but Amy soon put me at ease and was very encouraging and passionate about her job. We had an amazing experience so thank you very much Amy and the rest of the team! Sonya and Paul

A bucket list experience ticked off the list!
An amazing experience! The entire process was so smooth and all the staff, from check in all the way through to guides, were knowledgable and friendly. We booked last minute approx 2 days before the departure date. The website was initially slow to take payment and remained on the loading screen, but we got there in the end. The team were well responsive via email. On arrival, there is free parking on the main street and a tap to fill up water bottles. We were allocated into groups of 11, which was split across 2 helicopters. Our guide, Yula, was so fun and patient. As the first group onto the ice, we were able to stop at a sheltered part of the glacier alone and watch the sunrise over the mountain whilst she told us an indigineous origin story about the glacier - magical! Try to factor in some breathing room into your itinerary. Some flights in the afternoon were cut short due to incoming cloud but the team are very good at communicating this as a possibility throughout. They do everything they can to maximise the experience safely. I would thoroughly recommend this experience to anyone!

We booked the Heli Hike, but unfortunately, due to weather, this had to be cancelled as the helicopter could not safely fly up to the glacier and land us there. It's clear that they take safety very seriously (which I really appreciate), and this cancellation was communicated clearly and promptly once the weather changed.
They offered to re-book us for the following day, which wasn't possible given our travel schedule, or to attend the valley walking hike with a partial reimbursement as an alternative. We opted to join the early morning valley hike, and I am so glad that we did!

The tour guides were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. They carefully assessed everyone's outfits, then offered appropriate equipment, jackets, gloves, and gear to anyone who they thought needed it and encouraged people to be prepared. The waterproof jacket that they loaned to me was amazing! I have no idea what brand it was, and I wish I'd taken a picture of the logo because I would love to get one! (it rained the entire walk, but the jacket kept me bone dry, and it was awesome)

While I'm sad we didn't get to ice climb and check out the glacier, I was really impressed with the valley tour, and we ended up having a lot of fun. I learned a lot about NZs natural plants, history, and local animals. The guides kept a close eye on everyone, regularly did head counts, and made sure that everyone was safe. They were very accommodating, very careful, very prepared, and just all-around excellent tour guides.

If you get the chance to stop in at Franz Josef, I highly recommend taking one of their tours.

My wife and I considered the helicopter ride to the glacier but we opted for the valley hike that takes you pretty close to the face of the glacier. The drive to the trail head is scenic and the hike to the glacier is really nice. It had been raining a lot before our hike so the waterfalls were really running fast and were great to see on the hike as there are a lot of them to see and you get very close to them. You also follow the bed of the glacier where it used to be before it receded. The guide tells you information about the area and the glacier as you walk so it is very informative and the guide had a lot of energy and was engaging. While you walk you see a lot of helicopters zoom overhead but they go by so fast the passengers really can't enjoy all the valley has to offer in terms of information and views. If you really wanted to do the helicopter I would encourage you to do the valley hike as well. The hike is a little strenuous and there are a fair amount of uneven rocks you walk on plus there are water crossings so a walking stick might be handy if you need help with balance. Our group had all ages and levels of fitness and the pace was slow enough that everyone kept up. The group was no so large you could not hear the guide and never felt too crowded. My wife and I really enjoyed this trip and would highly recommend this option. I am sure the helicopter ride is pretty cool but do both if you can. Keep in mind the weather is pretty variable and the glacier helicopter rides may not go if the clouds are low. When we were there in November they had multiple days they could not get out to the glacier so plan accordingly. FYI-the tour company provided extra gear if you need it as it can be cool and wet on the hike up.

We did the 3hr Glacier Valley Walk and thoroughly enjoyed it. We were keen to see it up close but instead of doing the free walk alone, felt we would benefit from some background and history. Going with a guide really enhanced the experience compared to if we had simply done a return walk. We were kitted up since a storm was due to come in, including fully waterproof gear and big solid shoes which allowed us to walk straight through the streams on the way without having to balance over rocks carefully.

We took a short drive down to the start of the walk and followed the public route for a few minutes before going down a private path through the surrounding forest. Here the guide explained all about the local plants and trees which was much more interesting than it sounds! We rejoined the public path and continued our journey with interesting facts about the region, with our guide finding pieces of ice from the glacier deposited along the way. Due to the heavy rain and winds overnight there was a lot of rockfall so we had to take the more public route but this didn't make it any less enjoyable.

Only issue was our trip was actually 4 hours rather than 3, which meant we were pushed for time as we had something booked that afternoon. Otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable tour

Our glacier valley walk with Sam and Rebekah was truly enjoyable. Having spent much of our previous few days on long bus tours and the drive from the east coast, we were ready to stretch our legs and enjoy the fresh glacier air. The two catered to our young boys, entertaining their young minds along the way to distract their short legs from the duration of the hike (only frustrating due the weight of their waterproof boots and layers, but short overall really and we lucked out that we really didn't need much of the gear we all put on). Unique facts about the plant life, geology of the region and Maori culture... alongside great views, hot chocolate and very cool/large pieces of quartz made for a memorable afternoon. We did not partake in the hot pools as it was relatively crowded the afternoon we were there, but imagine it would make for a nice ending to a wet/cool day, so be sure to pack your swimsuits just in case.

We signed up for the glacier tour with great anticipation. We brought several layers of clothes expecting extreme temperature swings. However, this guided tour, which was excellent and informative, brought us no where close to the glacier. The closest we came was several hundred meters from the glacier. Still a good sightseeing experience, however a little misleading!

It takes less than 30min to get up here and it’s through a bit of Forrest with views. Very crowded.

When you get to the top you’ll realize you’re just looking at a mountain with clouds, the glacier has receeded and probably only visible a small percentage of the time. We went in summer when it is supposedly most visible

We did take a helicopter to see it and that was amazing, so do that if able

We had a good experience. It was pouring rain, but our guides worked hard to make a good experience for us.
Travelers should be aware that West Coast New Zealand weather is unpredictable and the waivers clearly say there are no guarantees.
One should also be aware that the hike is designed for a range of abilities and is not an extreme experience. The guides will err on the side of safety as conditions can change. Our hike was cut short because the river became too swollen.
Nevertheless we got to see amazing waterfalls and rain forest.

Sophie took us on the glacial valley walk. We were lucky as the sun was out when we got our first view of the glacier. Sophie was a mine of information as we proceeded up the side of the river. The heavens opened and the mountains began to torrent. We made it to the glacier viewing area but visibility was poor. Sophie made sure that we made a safe return to the drop off area. Job well done by this Franz Josef Glacier guide and the centre team.

First off, this company is fantastic.....great equipment, great guides, great vibes. Our start was under gloomy skies in a rickety bus. Luke, a fantastic and very charismatic guide, drove us to the start of our 4 and 1/2K (round trip) river valley walk. The sky cleared, the sights were unbelievable and snacks that Luke toted were very appreciated. It was a great visual and educational experience.

We enjoyed our time with our guide, Jake, and his friendly and informative tour. There was no rush, and we all made the trip easily. We did not need the supplied gortex jackets as the weather was fine, but two of the teens appreciated the supplied socks and walking boots which prevented ankle rolls in the riverbed that their own vans, whilst looking good, are unlikely to have been much assistance. We greatly appreciated the scenery and information, and plenty of photographs were taken.
