Overview

Unlock the secrets of New Orleans’ oldest and most famous graveyard in a short amount of time with this tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. A guided tour is a must as it’s the only way to enter due to archdiocese rules. Walk among elaborate family vaults and the tomb of voodoo priestess Marie Laveau, and learn about the city’s above-ground burial practices from a guide.

What to Expect

Connect with your guide in the French Quarter and take a short walk to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, the oldest and most legendary of New Orleans’ “Cities of the Dead.” Learn about the history of burial in New Orleans, including the city’s distinctive above-ground methods that are necessary when below sea level.

Enter the cemetery gates with your guide for a 1-mile walk through cobblestone avenues and elaborate burial vaults you may recognize from films like Easy Rider. Because of archdiocese regulations, visitors cannot enter most New Orleans cemeteries alone, so a guided tour is the only way to go. See the tombs of prominent Louisiana families, and hear the legends that swirl around the the alleged final resting place of voodoo queen Marie Laveau.

The tour ends at Basin Street Station.

This is a great thing to do in New Orleans

This tour was great, very factual and with lots of information. It was conducted very seriously and in a professional matter. Our guide, Denisse, was awesome! The only weird thing: meeting point was in front of a restaurant and then we walked to the cementery....More

Interesting

The tour was interesting. The cemetery is bit run down but obviously very old. It is required now to have a tour guide to go in. Our tour guide was interesting, but on her phone a bit much for our liking which detracted a bit...More

Our tour guide was Angel. She was unprofessional, smelled bad, and talked about how she was on some meds. We couldn't tell if she was telling us the truth or making stuff up half the time. She was difficult to understand. She was also getting...More

Our tour guide was a nice gentleman who worked at the WW2 museum and was a professor( I cannot remember his name). We were running behind and he waited for us and even went above and beyond to give us a tour that lasted almost...More

It is best to sign up ahead. However, while we were there, some people who arrived earlier were allowed to join before the tour started, but cash only. May depend upon the tour guide.
