Overview
Experience the wilds of the Louisiana swamp plus hear the fascinating history of a Southern plantation all in one day with this great-value combo tour. Visit Destrehan Plantation, the oldest of its kind in the region, where you’ll learn about antebellum life and see a Slave Revolt museum while touring the restored mansion and grounds. Then ride in a covered boat through Manchac Swamp, a privately owned habitat for alligators, egrets, and other wildlife.
Highlights
  • Get a dose of southern antebellum culture and swamp life in one day
  • Tour the historic Destrehan Plantation with a costumed guide
  • Glide through a private Louisiana swamp on a wildlife-watching boat
  • Get outside of New Orleans without renting a car; transport is included
What to Expect
After boarding an air-conditioned coach in the French Quarter, follow the Lake Pontechartrain shoreline to Destrehan Plantation, the oldest plantation in the lower Mississippi Valley. Tour the carefully restored French colonial mansion with a costumed guide, learning about former inhabitants and the southern sugar cane industry. You'll also have a chance to explore the gardens and a museum dedicated to the 1811 slave revolt. Continue on to the Manchac Swamp for a wildlife tour in a covered boat that provides protection from weather in all seasons. Learn about swamp culture and the endangered ecosystem from a guide as you look for alligators, raccoons, snakes, birdlife, and giant rodents. The swamp is privately owned, so you don't have to worry about crowds. Return to the convenient French Quarter drop-off point in the late afternoon or evening.

I was not sure what to expect with this plantation and I was a bit nervous about what our guide would share. I know there are people out there that want to forget about the horrible history of slavery and I was hoping that this tour would not whitewash our history. I was happy

Jim was a really great tour guide. We got lucky and had him for 2 separate tours on our trip and couldn't have been happier! He was very well informed and kept it super fun. Highly recommend Grey Line and Jim as a guide!
