Overview
Two swipes of a MetroCard is all it takes to experience the New York subway, the beating heart of the City That Never Sleeps. This guided walking tour showcases the history of the 113-year-old underground transit system, from gilded ghost stations—complete with Jazz Age chandeliers—to the most modern station: the Oculus at the recently completed World Trade Center station. With a maximum of 12 passengers, this small-group tour gets you close enough to hear every comment and historical detail, whether you’re an inquisitive subway buff or a quiet historian.
What to Expect

This tour will stop in stations that are all open to the public. Using the 6 train as a ten-car time machine, ride through and see three abandoned ghost stations that 4, 5, and 6 riders unknowingly pass through everyday: Worth Street, 18th Street and the famed City Hall Station. The tour does not stop inside these stations.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS:

  • City Hall Park as the birthplace of the subway system including the parts of the famed City Hall Station you can see right in the park
  • The comically short route of the mythical “Subway before the Subway,” Alfred Eli Beach’s Pneumatic Transit System
  • The architectural ghosts of the now nearly forgotten Chambers Street station which was originally a terminal built in 1915 to rival Grand Central
  • Ride through the very first 9 stations in the original 1904 system, armed with a scavenger hunt checklist to find historical and architectural treasures in these stations
  • Ending in one of NYC’s newest and controversial transit hubs: The World Trade Center Oculus to learn about the world’s largest jigsaw puzzle and how the complex is built like a modern-day, multi-billion dollar Stonehenge

DETAILS:
What to know: The tour is 2 hours long, requires 2 metro card swipes and is happening rain or shine! Please note the route might change slightly depending on the MTA schedule.
What to wear: Bring comfortable shoes, as the tour requires walking up and down stairs

I took my father on the subway tour and we both loved it. Having lived in the city for 10 years, we take for granted what we walk by every day. Mandy was so knowledgeable and very personable. She peaked our curiosity for more. I...More

More of a lecture

Lots of information was provided but was very hard to hear due to the noise and the very large group. (17 people was way too big for this tour...it should have been half). Tour guide was nice and spoke quite a bit on the history...More

Cool stuff right under your nose!

Definitely would recommend this tour to native New Yorkers and visitors alike. Being from NYC, I know surprisingly little about its history and the cool buildings and artifacts I pass by every day. Our tour guide, Mandy, was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and maneuvered us around the...More
