    Neal is a Top Guide
Wow. Neal is a knowledgeable, passionate, and animated educator. My whole family really enjoyed this tour. Neal took us through history from the 1600s, when Harlem was home to native people, up to the recent decades of hip hop where stars rose literally from the streets of the neighborhood. Most of the tour centered around the Harlem Renaissance - Neal took us to many of the most famous landmarks throughout including the Apollo. I've been in New York for 2 years and this was a really great way to learn a lot about the significant role Harlem played in New York history.

    No tour, no refund
Turned up for the tour and as polite as the person was on the phone they had failed to inform us that the tour guide was sick and the tour wasn’t going ahead. He did rescheduled with us two days later and when we called prior to getting to the meeting spot, he again informed us that the tour guide was still sick. However, he himself would honour the tour which was great, or we could have a full refund. We decided to opt for the full refund which he said he would confirm via email which never transpired, and I am still waiting for the refund so Harlem Tours could you please effect my refund as soon as possible. I am however unable to comment on the tour itself which I suspect would be quite interesting.

    Fun and Informative!
We loved this tour and our tour guide Neal was great. Lots of history presented in a fun and interesting way. Plus, our tour ran into two interesting local celebrities. Our tour guide knew them, introduced them, told us about their cultural contribution to Harlem, and wove their personal histories into the overall history of Harlem. It was fabulous. As a side bonus, we each had some really great red velvet cake from a local cake shop - very tasty.

We loved it and highly recommend it! Plus our tour group ran into two local celebrities, and our super tour guide introduced us, told us why they were each historically important and seamlessly wove their stories into the wonderful Harlem history he was telling us about.

    Highlight of our Trip
We organized a Harlem tour with Harlem Heritage Tours for a class of film students exploring the history and culture of NYC. Our knowledgeable guide was excellent and provided a memorable experience for our students with engaging anecdotes both personal and historical about the neighborhood. He expertly provided historical context, connecting the neighborhood's rich history to its vibrant present. We explored iconic landmarks like the Apollo Theater, the Dr. King Towerts and more gaining insight into their cultural significance. We met residents and small business owners, offering a genuine, immersive experience. Our guide's passion and expertise made this tour a resounding success.

    Operator didn’t show up
With several others we waited quite some time at the Apollo Theatre, but the tour operator did not show up. A complete waste of time & effort.

No show guide and tour that couldn’t deliver on its description
The guide never showed. We called and got no response. On top of that, the description states that the tour will take you onstage at the Apollo and backstage. However, Apollo employees informed us that no one was allowed to go past the gift shop, on a tour or otherwise. So, even if our guide has shown up, we couldn’t have experienced what was promised. Incredibly disappointing.

    Not great
Was reasonably enjoyable to see the neighborhood but very little detail given. Some historic events were mentioned but no detail given.

    Terrible experience
No one from Viator showed up. We waited an hour. I called the phone number for Viator but they were unable to contact the local company so I still don't know what happened. Very disappointing - would not use Viator again.

    One of a kind
This is a fun tour which probably needs to change its description on Trip Advisor since it is walking only. We thought it was quirky and somewhat random in its approach but we got a good feel for Harlem and its history and its current state. There are several things mentioned in other reviews that we did not see or experience but the time was filled with visual and audio experiences that kept us all engaged. I think Neal assesses his group and tailors a personal experience. That is all you can ask for, isn’t it?

    An eclectic tour
Our guide had forgotten about our trip and arrived late after we rang him. He was clearly very knowledgeable and had brought a book with some photos which explained the history of Harlem. We visited some interesting areas such as Harlem market and a redeveloped housing estate. We felt though, while the achievements of African Americans should be highlighted, our guide rather concentrated on the achievements of one particular person of colour, Malcolm X.

I am sorry but I have learned virtually nothing on this trip. There was no multimedia presentation in the beginning. We were taken to the church and sat 2 hrs straight during the whole mass, gospel was maybe 30% of the whole experience. Then the guide walked us through some streets but like I said, I have learned virtually nothing about the history of the area. I am not even sure if the guide has any professional training, for sure he had no historical background but also did not really care if we understand what he was saying (normally the guides speak loudly and clearly since they are aware most participants are not native English speakers, but not in this case). Wouldnt pay USD 45 again.

I booked this tour for 3 people on september 10th. We were supposed to redeem our tickets at the Harlem Heritage Tourism and Cultural Center at 9:00, with the tour supposedly starting at 9:15 with a light breakfast, and time to relax in the Cultural Center.
We were several people waiting (around 10-15), until the guide arrives at 9:30. After some talk outside, we went straight to the Canaan Baptist Church nearby for Church service starting at 10:00.
We left the church around 11:15.
After that (and some historical stories told by the guide on the sidewalk) we decided to leave the tour.
The bad weather was part of our decision, but the way it started (late, no apparent organization, no breakfast and Cultural Center visit) didn't enticed us to continue the tour.

They did not show up, they did not email us about the tour being cancelled, when we got someone to call them after waiting for 15 minutes, they said it was cancelled and we could come back tomorrow. Not that we would have taken the train again for one hour to do a Harlem tour but as can be expected when working with tourist we were leaving NY the next day. They don't reply to my email in which I was asking for a refund. Ofcourse they don't need any emails or phone calls to refund a trip they did not show up in. They should just apologise and refund the trip! I would totally have understood that something came up and things went wrong but to continue it like they are doing by not refunding the tour is a bit lame. We walked around Harlem and tasted some Sole Food at Silvia restaurant which was a tasty experience

This was our final day in NYC and this tour did not disappoint! The guide knows Harlem and everyone on the street which made it very fun. Listen closely and you will gain insight into his love of Harlem and gain fantastic knowledge of the history of the area and its people. We had individuals from all over the world on our tour and everyone seemed to enjoy the enthusiasm and excitment the guide had for this place! We thoroughly enjoyed our time and getting to hear Yusef Salaam a member of the Exonerated Five speak at the Church was an unexpected highlight. I would highly recommend this tour! Harlem is a beautiful area with much history and beautiful architecture.

Booked this tour for 15 March for 2, on holiday from the UK - no one turned up, tried phoning to confirm arrangements but went on to voice mail. I have since sent 4 emails but not received a reply. Appreciate unexpected things happen which means the tour might be cancelled but not good enough to ignore phone calls and emails and not refund money.

We were supposed to meet up at the Heritage Center. No Multimedia Show as advertised- went straight to the church, were we just waited. We went to church, the gospel wasn’t present. Our guide seemed to go missing while we were in there, he repeated himself, and honestly he was more interested in greeting other people. We left early, as it seemed unorganised. Also we cancelled a trip last year due to illness, and they told us, we could get a refund. We never did.

The tour was not as advertised. There was no light breakfast as advertised or multimedia experience, entrance to the heritage centre or storage. The church service and choir were good, but the tour guide was difficult to understand. His information was jumbled and quite incoherent.

The reviewer is harassing us, she previously wrote a review that was untrue and totally disrespectful to our employee and business, she then requested refund and we gave it to her, then she demanded a refund for her friend who we received no complaint from. We gave her friend a refund, traveler then removed scandalous review, now she writes this review. We always apologize when we are wrong, but this is a case of traveler using reviews as a weapon to hurt and harm and that’s just not right.

We had a lovely tour guide who was the fittest 91 year old we’ve ever seen. He was very knowledgable and a great tour guide. He showed us around Harlem and recommended one of the best places to eat called The Red Rooster where we had lunch after the tour.
The visit to the Gospel church was really good although it was totally designed for tourists. At times it didn’t feel very authentic, however the singing in the church was great. The hoards of tourists are put in a long queue outside the church and herded in. This part felt very touristy and so did the fact that we were told not to pass the offering tray without being expected to give an offering. I think I would have preferred to visit a church service without being part of a tourist group. Highly recommend our guide who was so nice to us all. Definitely go to The Red Rooster for brunch after!

We booked this tour as we had missed visiting Harlem on a previous visit to NY.
However, the website read much better than the reality.
The owner /guide, Neal, arrive at the tour start time. On entering the Cultural Centre the guide made some token effort to clear a floor space to put out some folding chairs. The room looked like an old attic that hadn't had a spring clean in a decade.
The website states that, "Your tour begins with a light breakfast and introductory video presentation...." - didn't happen. No light breakfast, no video. The guide did check that his tablet was charging and told us about the great music etc that we would have when we did the walking part of the tour.
The guide was very cheerful and personable but gave a disjointed, off the cuff, talk about Harlem and its civil rights history. He appeared to be filling in time before transferring us to the church about half a block away.
We arrived at the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ to find queues of other tour groups waiting to enter. There were church "helpers" on the street shouting at the tourists not to take in bags/backpacks.
The church itself was a converted picture theatre.
The tourists were herded upstairs to the gallery section away from the congregation. The"head usher"(he had a badge) was particularly officious and seemed determined to spoil everyone's visit. His resentment of having tourists in his church was palpable. I'm certain that the church enjoys the revenue stream and plate offerings and therefore should confine this man to the main church hall.
The gallery has a wide balustrade, but even so , tourists could not sit in the front row as they might drop items onto the congregation.
Most of the visitors could probably see the preacher and the choir. Otherwise there was a large projection screen flanked by two monitors to view the service but not be a part of the service.
It was better than watching a church service on TV as the music and singing were live and were the highlight of the visit. The pianist ( unseen) was brilliant.
The church service took longer than expected leaving less than half an hour for the multimedia walking part of the tour.
Perhaps the tour improved in this part but as we were running short on time , we forwent
this experience.

Hello my name is Neal Shoemaker and I own and operate Harlem Heritage Tours. I firstly want to apologize to the reviewer for not providing the usual experience that our guests receive when they visit Harlem Heritage Tours. The day the reviewer arrived we were preparing to decorate our outside and inside Christmas trees and windows, having pulled all the decorations off the top shelves and, and pushing furniture into the back room, it left our office in a situation that is not the usually way, and for that we apologize to the customer. We refunded 117.00 dollars to the customer in an effort to remedy the situation and hope one day to make it up to the reviewer, we love what we do and work very hard to please all customers and hope one day to make it up to the reviewer.

This tour was one of the best tours I’ve been on. Our tour guide was super knowledgeable and enthusiastic about giving us a genuine experience of Harlem. We had a great time and I would recommend to anyone who would be looking for tours in Harlem.
