- rosemarymH5962CI0 contributionsSunday afternoon wine tasting tour.We spent a lovely afternoon with Trinity as our guide, tasting some of the fantastic wines that are produced in the Martinborough region. Amongst others, we tasted wine from Tiwaiwaka vineyard. Normally, we like the sauvignon blanc wines, but we were treated with their Semillon wine, which we really enjoyed. They accompanied our wine tasting with a delicious lunch platter of produce from the local area. A tour to be recommended.Written 12 January 2025
- r0kster0 contributionsA memorable tour for all the right reasons! The tour was very thoughtfully curated and arranged with our interests in mind. Matthew went above and beyond to ensure we had a great day. I found the tour informative and well organized. It’s clear that Matthew loves introducing new people to the lovely town of Martinborough and its vineyards. The lunch at Poppie’s was excellent. My most cherished stop on the tour was the visit to Olio where we were given a lovely tour of the olive groves and tasting. I’m already planning to take another tour on my next visit to MartinboroughWritten 30 December 2024
- ssyja0 contributionsInformative & enjoyableSeamless & professional from booking to the completion of our tour. Trinity our guide was friendly & accommodating- she shared with us just the right amount of information, and was happy to answer any questions. We visited 4 local wineries, & enjoyed the tastings. I would happily take another tour with Martinborough Wine Tours, and would recommend them to others visiting the area.Written 28 November 2024
- gilllynch20200 contributionsOne of the best wine tours we have doneThe pre trip information was very helpful and being picked up from the railway station added to the experience. Matthew proved to be an excellent tour guide, pointing out various places as we drove to Martinborough and giving us some of the history. He also pointed out the best coffee shops. Our guide ,Trinity, was friendly , informative and really good at her job. It was a pleasure to be driven around by her . Lunch at the Poppies is to be recommended ( the platter for two was excellent). We were taken to 5 different wineries on our tour , each one different in size , but all the staff we met were interesting and keen to show off their products. Special mention to John at Te Hera , he took time to explain how he made the wine and was a really genuine chap who made us very welcome . This tour is great value for money in our opinion.Written 26 November 2024
- Journey557484024420 contributionsBest way to get a taste of big and boutique wineriesWe did the half day tour with Matthew as part of our package stay at the Martinborough hotel. The tour has been the highlight of our trip. Matthew is so knowledgeable & passionate about the region & its history. He’s knows the wineries & winemakers & tailors to your tastes. The van is super comfortable. The scenery stunning, and the wine = excellent! Wonderful day!Written 14 November 2024
- kathyd6550 contributionsGold! A winning tour.A great day! The full day tour was fabulous with a wonderful lunch at a winery. Matthew was a fantastic host and gave us great information about Martinborough. We had but six on the tour, us and a group of four. The van was very comfortable, the chosen wineries were delightful.Written 8 November 2024
- jnwaway0 contributionsA full and varied day.We had a very full day, overrunning a bit in the afternoon, but only because we wee too engaged!. Three classical cellar door tastings (5 wines each, tutored), a tour of an olive grove, a very nice lunch, topped off with an idiosyncratic but very memorable time with a solo artisanal winemaker walking us through the process with a sample of young wines at each stage. We finished tired but happy with many thanks to Trinity, our guide.Written 4 November 2024
- oliviafI9278AO0 contributionsPerfect Tour!!Our tour was so enjoyable we highly recommend it!! Matthew and Trinity were fabulous hosts. They were so knowledgeable and shared a great mix of history and humour. The wineries they took us to were stunning, a mix of large and small and the timing was perfect. We did the half day and stayed on to relax at Palliser for lunch which was fabulous. The rest of our tour group were doing the full day and their lunch destination seemed amazing too. Both options were great. It was just the most perfect day and the wines were fantastic. We learnt so much about each wine and will go be going back to Martinborough to soak it all up again in the future for a longer stay.Written 31 October 2024
- kathyd6550 contributionsFun, fun, fun!Loved Matthew and his history of Martinborough and knowledge of wine! I appreciated he let us k ow who would be in our group. The places he took us to great wineries and he obviously knew the people and the town!! A definite yes!Written 27 October 2024
- kiwitravelnz0 contributionsAbsolutely fantastic wine tour. Highly recommend. We took the train from Wellington to Featherston before being picked up by our fabulous Martinborough Wine Tour guide Trinity. We enjoyed this tour 6 years and couldn't wait to experience delicious wine and hospitality again. We had an amazing time visiting different wineries. They were all set among beautiful scenery, with knowledgeable staff sharing their wine passion. We also had the opportunity to eat beautiful food. Highly recommend this fabulous tour.Written 13 October 2024

- CandJDunnington0 contributionsGood wine tour to 5 vineyards with ample tastingWe visited 5 vineyards and had good tasting in all of them - Margrain, Schubert, Poppies, Palliser and Runholder- we had a very good meat and cheese platter for lunch at Poppies. The tour guide was very good BUT even sitting directly behind her on the mini bus I struggled to hear what she was saying - certainly people behind us could not hear at all, When I mentioned this to her - nothing was changed. So a little disappointing in that respect.Written 28 March 2024
- Englishlee07100 contributionsVery enjoyable and informative tour.We had never been to the Martinborough area before and so thought that the easiest way to get the best out of the area wines was to take a tour. This proved to be a great idea as the tour was excellent in every way. Good range of vineyards visited (small family run and larger corporate ones) and some excellent wines tasted. Matthew was very informative and was a great guide offering good background information and knowledgeably answering any questions we had. Would have no hesitation using Martinborough Wine Tours again.Written 23 March 2024
- Quebro0 contributionsAn excellent experienceMathew our tour leader had an exceptional knowledge of not only Martinborough's wineries and wines but the development of the village by its founder John Martin. The lunch at Poppies was delicious. The wineries we visited were excellent. We took the train from Wellington to Featherston which was a very relaxing way to travel. We were picked up from and dropped back at Featheston Station to return to Wellington.Written 10 March 2024

Having such a small group also makes it such a personal experience. The small things this company does for customers is the cherry on the top!Written 2 March 2024

This tour is well worth doing. We had a wonderful day among some spectacular scenery. Matthew was an exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable guide who was able to give us lots of information about local history as well as the local wine industry. The lunch at the hotel was also very enjoyable. I would recommend this to anyone thinking of doing it.

Matthew was a great guide, very relaxed and very knowledgable of the area so the whole tour was great.
The tour is not rushed so you have the time to climb to the lighthouse even if at a slow pace and enjoy watching all the seals play.
Thankyou.....look forward to getting down that way again.

This tour was such good value! We had a wonderful day with Matthew. He was friendly and relaxed, but so knowledgeable about the area, the wineries and the history. We learned so much and were able to relax and just enjoy the day. The rural store stopover for morning tea was a highlight. Lunch and the winery an added bonus, after our climb up to the lighthouse. Highly recommended.

My wife and I undertook the half day wine tour with Matthew during our motorhome tour of New Zealand.
This was most interesting and enjoyable experience.
Matthew collected us from the campsite and during the tour we visited four vineyards tasting at least five wines at each stop.
Matthew was a very informative guide explaining the history of Martinborough and the development of its wine industry.
The wine tastings were varied with tastings of champagne, pinot noir, pinot gris, riesling, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc.
The undoubted highlight was a visit to John Douglas’ Te Hera vineyard where the opportunity was provided to sample riesling and pinot noir wines including a variety of the latter from a selection of barrels.
An added bonus was the opportunity provided to purchase wines at each vineyard.
This was a most informative and enjoyable tour which provided a good insight into the wine production industry in Martinborough and is highly recommended.

Martinborough - Wairarapa wine region
Only a stones throw from Wellington, either over the Rimutaka mountain range via car/campervan or through it via a train then bus from Featherston, Martinborough is a wine lovers dream. Picture Blenheim but on a smaller scale, with all cellar doors within a 20km radius. If you are staying on the immaculately kept Top 10 Holiday Park then your wine tour can be completed by hiring a mountain bike from reception. My wife Julie and I took the trip recently and had a great time tasting and buying some top class wines as well as devouring a delicious platter at the newly opened Poppies vineyard/restaurant. Read about it here...
From the campsite we turned left onto Princess Street and another left further up on to Kitchener and we were at our first destination, Palliser Wines. On offer were some great whites including an oaky Chardonnay which we just had to buy. The two Pinot Noir's for tasting were excellent and our host Jane was very knowledgeable about all things wine.
After returning to the junction with Princess we took a left and continued up to Martinborough Vineyard which is set back on the left. A small cellar door here offered the usual mixtures of whites including an outstanding early Riesling , which we took away with us. Their flagship Pinot Noir has won awards for 2010 and 2011 and their new crop was particularly tasty.
Schubert Wines was next up, take a right at the junction of Princess and Huangarua Road and its a short distance up the road on the right. Robert welcomed us and after avoiding the tasting fee via social networking sign up, we settled into a great chat about our NZ immigration plans. The Tribianco on offer was very impressive as was his Pinot Noir, but it was his Rose that surprised us enough to buy a bottle (we don't usually pick out Rose!). Using 100% Pinot Noir grapes it reminded us of pink champagne thanks to the high carbon dioxide levels producing very small bubbles.
Further up Huangarua and on to Puruatanga Road is the brand new Poppies, proprietor Poppy welcomed us for a late lunch (it was getting on for 3pm when we arrived). We tasted their range of wines and were especially impressed with the Pinot Gris so ordered a bottle to accompany our platter for two (reasonably priced at $20 per head). The platter created by ex-chef Shayne was divine combining the following ingredients for mouth watering results: pork, fresh salmon, soaked mushrooms, hummus, courgettes, artichokes, whole olives, chopped olives, pickled garlic, pickled red peppers all served with two huge slices of ciabatta. I cant recommend this place enough, the hospitality we received was first rate.
We managed to fit in one more winery on our way back home. Te Kairanga is a beautiful estate at the start of Martins Road at the end of Puruatanga. We were treated to a history lesson on the area by an ex-teacher who had worked at the vineyard for 14 years. By this time our taste buds weren't really working properly after quite a few wines, so we decided not to buy and return another day.
We cycled the 4 or 5km back to the campground just in time for our visit to Circus cinema to watch the new Bond film, Skyfall. The cinema is an absolute joy: comfy seats and a crisp picture and their pizza's are just as impressive.
For those heading up highway 2 to Masterton over the summer will not regret the 15km diversion to Martinborough. You may stay 3 days like us!
Danny
* One important thing to note is that tastings are $5 each per venue but this is taken off the cost of a bottle if you decide to buy.

We took our bride to be on this wine tour and it exceeded all expectations. From the very beginning our tour guide Roger treated us so kindly and patiently - he even took us to the olive gardens right at the end to give me a chance to try something as I had opted to be sober driver (so had to abstain from trying the wine). The wineries were all beautiful and the the vintner's accommodating. Very worth our time, would highly recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day ... our guide, the very affable Roger, provided the perfect balance of relevant information about the area and the sights, good company over a shared meal and enough time to enjoy the experience at a relaxed pace.. Martinborough is a great area to visit and the Marlborough Wine Tour - Pinot to Palliser - was an absolute highlight for us ... scenery, seals, lighthouse, great wine at the Murdoch James Estate winery. Totally recommend this tour.
