- MLHossell0 contributionsAmazing tour, we saw whales very up close!Fantastic tour, guides were professional and friendly and made sure everyone was safe at all times. We only saw dolphins in the distance but were lucky enough to see many whales pretty up close! Great value for money, would definitely recommend.Written 1 October 2023
- mikebW3783TJ0 contributionsSaw Turtles and DolphinsFantastic experience to have. They guys were very helpful for us slighley older customer. Kitted out in life jacket and helmet we headed to the beach dragging our two seater kayaks with us. Launching in to the surf was exhilarating but we made it out to open water. Your out for up to 3 hours and some physical activity is required, team work paddling is essential. We did manage to capsize which is quite a shock when it happens. The safety guys were great and reacted quickly to get us back on the kayak. Thanks to all that helped. We later tried to surf in to the beach but managed not to make it but capsized, thats when you realise why you have the helmets!!! The guys rescued us again. Alround a really memorable morning.Written 12 March 2020
- deminiessen0 contributionsGreat day!Great day! We did see a lot of dolphins, and the boys are great. They knew a lot about the sea and all the animals.Written 11 March 2020
- aliceodwyer920 contributionsWould 10/10 recommend to a friendSuper fun day with Noah our tour guide. Lots of dolphins and sea turtles spotted and great info from the guys throughout the day! Lovely touch at the end with the tim tams and teas/coffees. Would definitely recommend and go again :)Written 2 March 2020
- NoooraEveliina0 contributionsAn amazing couple of hours spotting dolphins and sea turtlesOur group had a great time during our tour kayaking around the bays and beaches of Byron Bay while spotting the local marine life. The tour guides were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable and shared some interesting facts about the marine life and Byron Bay itself. They were really understanding and helpful when my partner got sea sick and were able to take him back to the shore and made sure he was okay. We spotted sea turtles and heaps of dolphins putting on a show jumping out of the waves while we were only meters away from them. Overall such an incredible experience that I would definitely recommend, money well spent!Written 25 February 2020
- tallcaz0 contributionsIncrediblePossibly our best Byron experience yet! The guys were incredible, keeping group morale high and looking out for everyone. We were so lucky and saw lots of dolphins and a couple turtles too. Worth the early start to get out onto the water! Thank you for the experience and the tim-tams !!Written 25 February 2020
- OldTravelBag110 contributionsNot the experience I was expectingI’ve never been sea or travel sick but I started hurling as soon as we got over the choppy waves, the guys were really great when I was feeling like a massive idiot, capsizing repeatedly whilst throwing up. Really supportive and understanding even though it must be tough for them to try and keep the kayaks upright, everyone in them, avoid the vomit and stay chipper. Best group of guys I could have asked for when I was pretty useless myself. If this is something you want to do; do it with them. And take some sickness tablets.Written 11 February 2020
- DeannaBanana30110 contributionsjust a bad luck day, but they tried really hard to find us something!we had a very unlucky day where we didn't see ANYTHING. we saw seagulls haha. But it was a dull grey day with on and off raining. The instruction to begin with to learn how to paddle etc, and meeting all the guides was funny. They provide you with lifejackets and helmets. We paddled out for a little while, on the search for anything. Failing that we then stopped off at one of the other beaches along the bay where we had tea/coffee and timtams as well as there's toilets to use. The waves were crashing a lot on the shore of this beach however, and they did warn us to be prepared for a not-so-nice landing. The guides were helping people come in, but we were a kayak that really crashed hard, and so after us they properly got in the water to help people come in safely (unlucky for us!). They then sent us back out once finishing, to again try and find something but we found nothing. They really did try their best, and crack a couple of jokes to lighten the mood but it just wasn't working. But once we returned to the main beach, they explained that because they do actually have a dolphin guarantee anybody can come back for free that went out that morning, and there is no expiry as to when we can come back and do that. They actually cancelled the afternoon tour that day too because conditions weren't great. Parking is not free, so we parked in town where there is free parking on the corner of Butler street/Somerset streetWritten 16 December 2019
- annabelleditton0 contributionsNo Dolphins but still had fun.Visited with a group of 4, one friend was very nervous about kayaking so the 2 of us went in with the guides (Noah & Luke) which was great. We didn’t see any dolphins but managed to surf some waves in the kayaks which was much more fun. Afterwards we were offered free tea, coffee, hot chocolate & tim tams. Also unlike many activities - you don’t have to pay for the pictures afterwards!!! Overall we all had a great time, would definitely recommend going with a guide if you’re not confident, less hard work and more funWritten 26 November 2019
- moniquef4600 contributionsTHE BESTHighly recommend. Staff top quality. Within minutes we saw a sea turtle, then many many pods of dolphins. To top it off got within 25m of 2 whales.Written 22 October 2019
- LjFox10 contributionsExcellent CompanyI’d like to note that I’m giving this company 5 stars despite the fact I spent the entire 3 hours vomiting from sea sickness - haha! The guys who run this are absolutely brilliant, they kept checking on me and really helped me out as much as they could. That said, the waves are huge and there’s so waiting around for others to enter the water and looking for wildlife so it’s far from ideal for those who do suffer from sea sickness (even with medication) but it was my fault for trying! We managed to spot some turtles then, right at the end, a stunning pod of dolphins arrived that made it all worthwhile!Written 15 January 2019
- Rebw17070 contributionsFantastic! One of my absolute favourite trips of the East Coast! Guides were all super fun and friendly, they all knew loads about the local wildlife and areas. Great at putting anyone feeling a bit nervous at ease. Even though we didn’t see any Dolphins or Whales this was still an amazing excursion and with their policy we can come back again for free any time in the future. Well worth doing and suitable for kids!Written 14 November 2018
- Henry T0 contributionsExcellent morning outCan not rate and recommend these guys highly enough. The briefing was thorough and fun too. The instructors were very patient with us, as it took us 4 attempts to get out on to the sea. We managed to see a lot of dolphins which was amazing and also learnt about the area from very informative lead instructor, Luke.Written 11 September 2018
- marliekeschuur0 contributionsIt was amazing !We had a amazing morning ! The first day we didn’t saw anything so we could come back the next day for free ! That was awesome ! - SMill230 contributions$140 for NOTHING!!Thought it was a great deal to go back for FREE if you didn’t see any dolphins until I came down with a vomiting and diarrhoea bug and got SLAMMED with $140!!! Absolutely no empathy was given that I was bed ridden and only concern of the owner was money. We are devastated at the lack of care and service as my boyfriend and I had been talking about this for the past 6 months and we’re so excited! Our hearts were broken. It cost me $140 to be vomiting in bed. Worst day and terrible service.Written 10 August 2018

This was disappointing. Lots of fluffing around, and when we did see dolphins we had to stop super fast away from them which meant we didn't really see them properly. Lots of sitting around on the kayak with the tour guide blabbing about property value and all sorts of random facts but not much experience with the dolphins. I think save your $$, hire your own kayak rather than be stuck in a group of 18 .

Hi Anne
I am sorry you were disappointed with your tour with us. I am not sure what you mean by “fluffing around”? We must go through all paddle instruction and safety procedures thoroughly. Our tour guides share knowledge and information about the history and geography of the area as we paddle from Clarkes Beach, out to Middle Reef and then to Wategos where we encounter the dolphins. Sorry you found this “useless chatting” and “blabbing” boring but plenty of customers like to learn a little bit about our spectacular area and the marine park. I was there on the day you came on our tour. I was at Wategos and saw your encounter with dolphins. When I returned to Clarkes Beach, I was talking to the owner of the other kayak company and I said to him that both our groups were getting a really good show. So, again, I am not sure what you mean by “we didn’t really see them properly?” All the other customers I spoke to at the end of the tour were thrilled with their dolphin experience.
The Biodiversity Conservation Regulation 2017 protects marine mammals such as whales, dolphins, and seals while allowing people to appreciate them in the wild. We adhere to the appropriate declared approach distances for marine mammals in NSW and The Australian National Guidelines for Whale and Dolphin Watching 2017.
This means we do not paddle on top of the dolphins or chase them down. The area we have been running tours in since 1995, is their critical habitat and we encourage correct behaviour. One of the reasons people cannot hire a kayak in Byron Bay is to stop people that are unaware of the laws for approaching the mammals and interfering with their behaviour. Given that you got, what I would consider, a great dolphin encounter and that I rescheduled your booking within the 24 hour time period, against company policy, at no charge, I find your review to be false but also actually quite strange.

I've done some kayaking in my life, and I'll honestly say it was mediocre at best. I did the 1:30pm afternoon kayaking session.
First, the kayaks don't have tail fins so steering is tougher (not a big issue until you're kayaking directly into the wind - which will happen).
Second, the only wildlife I saw were 2 dolphins that were at least 100m away, and the birds diving for fish - that was cool at least.
Third, the staff didn't check up on the fatigue of us as we had paddled into the wind for 20-25 minutes straight and some of our arms/shoulders were getting tired, but the response of the guide was for us to keep paddling instead of taking a short break. The group (14 of us) was spread out over 200m and there was no regard for the tired ones at the back. I think it would be good for the front to wait up for the slower ones.
Tour just felt a bit bland as there was no wildlife and just kept paddling for 2 hours.
Onto the positives. Tim tam break was good, got to chill along the beach and relax (finally). Accommodated me at the last minute. Friendly and approachable staff.

Hi Kaiser,
I am sorry you had a mediocre time.
However, in response to your review:
You were aware of the day’s conditions prior departure. The reason you joined us last minute was because your snorkelling tour had been cancelled because of the wind.
It was certainly a windy day and I discussed the conditions thoroughly with you and advised that you would be paddling hard on that day. I also advised you to walk down to the beach and check the conditions yourself, so you knew what you were up for.
With your kayaking experience I find it amazing that you would come out on a windy day after you were advised about the conditions and then complain about getting tired.
On days like that we take the safest route and we paddle straight into the wind. That way the hard work is done at the start and we can use the wind to take us home. Less hard paddling at the end when you may be tired.
We knew it was windy and that why extra guides were on the tour. I was watching the tour the entire time you were out on the water and at no time were you we 200 meters apart.
As for “tailfin’s” or rudders, we have found that these make things more difficult for our customers. We have been in operation since 1995 and have experimented with different kayaks over the years.
Please let us know if we can assist with another tour for you down the track we would love try and help you experience our wonderful tour

Booked a family of 6. Ended up going out at sea waited for the others to come. After an hour at sea wating for the rest of the group, time ran out for our group and we were taken back in and never taken to the dolphins because another group was ready to be taken out. We were offered 50% refund or a full credit for whenever we would return to Byron ( good if you either live around byron or have days remaining to your holidays). Fair would have been for us to get 100% refund as we were never taken to the dolphins although this is guaranteed on their website and in the agreement. These guys should familiarise themselves with consumer law and respect tourists instead of taking advantage of them.
We nevertheless elected the 50% refund; been days and still waiting for it to be processed ( wont hold our breath).

Hi Marc,
I am sorry to hear that your overall experience was disappointing for you.
On the day the tour experienced guests who were not strong swimmers and also ones that had to return due to sea sickness. In turn this resulted in a tour that was not as per our usual experience. We did not return early due to another tour going out as this was our last tour of the day.
Due to this we offered all our guests a 50% refund or a fully transferable voucher for the tour with no expiry and the option to change names.
We have processed the 50% refund you chose. It may just be taking time to be visible in your account due to the banks being closed over the New Year period and it having to go through the third party website you booked on. At no point would we take advantage of tourists. Our business and town revolves around tourism which is why we offered a partial refund or return voucher to all our guests on this tour.

I only wanted to do this so the family visiting from UK could see Dolphins. I emailed before the tour to ask the likelihood and was told dolphins were seen on 90% of tours which sounded good. We didn’t see any dolphins or any wildlife at all. I asked the guides individually whilst on the tour and the frequency of late, and it’s clear that 90% is an exaggeration. In fact one guide said “if you want to see Dolphins best chance is to walk up to lighthouse” I wish I knew that in advance, the tour might be better advertised as an adventure sea kayak with a chance of seeing dolphins…
Therefore we were all very disappointed.
The staff were good, I certainly don’t blame them, it’s hard to deal with the customers, because everyone seemed disappointed. I am sure if we saw dolphins it would have been great.
Another issue, which is avoidable, I booked for a group of 12 and the youngest, my 8yr old daughter was totally freaked out during the briefing because of all the sarcasm about sharks…. An 8yr old doesn’t get sarcasm and was totally shocked and ran away crying refusing to go in…. Her auntie had to accompany her so we wasted two tickets $89 each…. When she explained to the ticket office they dismissed this complaint which I find incredible. We aren’t complaining about anything other than to say, if you allow 5+yrs then don’t make jokes about shark attacks - just ridiculous. The fact they won’t refund demonstrates clearly the companies approach to customer service.
If you think $89 is good for 2hrs in a kayak (which isn’t too bad) do it, and if you see a dolphin it’s a bonus, if you are doing it to see dolphins, as advised by one of their guides, walk up to the lighthouse and save you’re money and time!

I think you nail it on the head when you say “ I am sure if we saw dolphins, it would have been great”! Of course, it is! That is why we are out there daily but we have never claimed to see dolphins on every tour. While we understand expectations are high, we are not Sea World and unfortunately are unable to produce dolphins on demand!
Our tour is in the ocean (and all that it entails) looking for wild dolphins, enjoying the amazing views of the most easterly point of Australia, our beautiful beaches and Cape Byron Lighthouse.
We DO see dolphins on 90% of the tours. We know this as we submit data every month to Cape Byron Marine Park.
We also understand the disappointment if we don’t spot the dolphins or whales (during whale season) and that is why we have our guarantee!
If you do not see dolphins or whales then you can come again for free! This offer has no expiry date and we think this is a great offer given that you have been on a tour of the Cape Byron Marine Park!
Our guides may have said you can see the dolphins from the lighthouse. They are the same dolphins that we view from the ocean. From the lighthouse you can see a much larger area and both sides of the Cape and many locals and visitors alike walk the lighthouse often, but again, not always seeing wildlife.

Absolutely brilliant!! We saw so many dolphins and one of the guides even spotted a humpback spout spray in the distance. They were amazing at getting us to where we needed to be to see the best things and telling us facts about the reef below at the same time. A stand out activity of our holiday so far!! Thanks guys for a brilliant time!

We were fortunate to go out on an amazing day where the water was so clear! All the equipment was provided, instructions explained clearly, and we felt safe at all times. The only reason we didn’t rate 5 stars is because we didn’t see any wildlife, which was disappointing but we know it’s no one’s fault. Because of this, $89 is pretty expensive just for an ocean kayak, but once again you can’t control nature and we understood that. There was also quite a bit of waiting around - at least 40 mins both in and out of the water waiting for everyone in the group to join, but the guides knew what they were doing and communicated with us at all times. Would still recommend as they said the chance of seeing dolphins or turtles were pretty high, we just got bad luck. Would love to try again with the free guarantee in the future but unfortunately i doubt we’ll be back to Byron any time soon. Thanks to all the guides, it was still a fun few hours!

We are glad paddling with us was a fun few hours!! The wildlife guarantee does not have an expiry so we really hope that we do see you again out on the water. We see wildlife on 90% of our tours and thanks for all the info in the review for future guests and I will pass on your thanks to the guides.

Guides were fantastic although don’t get on board with the one that takes photos as often you are paddling alone and it feels like you’re gonna tip it’s so wobbly with their movements in the boat.
We saw zero creatures so we will get another go for free when we come back which is nice.
But not sure I will take it up. Uncomfortable old kayaks not really worth the pain.
I guess I’d feel it was worth it if we actually saw some dolphins or whales.

Hi Dayle
Thank you for taking the time out to write a review. Sorry you didn't get to see any wildlife! We see dolphins 90% of the time. Unfortunately you were in the 10% that didn't and that is why we have the dolphin guarantee so any customer who didn't get to see them can come again for free! Please rest assured the kayaks we use are some of the best available for what we do and are turned over regularly. Hopefully see you another time for your free tour. We have back rests/supports available if required!
thanks

Very well guided and entertaining activity. Experienced guides who give clear instructions and guide the group in the water. There were 3-4 guides who were never too far from any visitor - this was very comforting for my wife who had never been kayaking in the sea before. Then dolphins were super cool, we saw more than 10 dolphins for decent periods of time.

Magical! Went hoping to see dolphins and saw humpback whales! A mother and calf. Not just one experience but numerous and they came very close to us but despite their size they are very cautious and moved in and out of the water so gracefully. The guide team were wonderful and gave great instruction. No-one tipped coming through the surf. Felt safe the whole time. Awesome experience. Thank you.

It really is a magical time of year on the water and especially under the water. So glad you could share this experience and enjoyed paddling with us.

The whole morning was brilliant! The weather was lovely and the staff were amazing! Very friendly and funny as well as very helpful all throughout the tour! We managed to see some dolphins after kayaking about 2.5k out to sea, it was very chilled and kept stopping for breaks throughout so it wasn’t too tiring, they took pictures throughout which were free to access on their Facebook which was a nice touch! When coming back to shore, they showed us how to ride the waves on our kayaks which was great fun, would highly recommend me and my girlfriend loved it!

Hi everyone, can you spot whales with this tour?
Not sure if hiring a boat or go kayaking to do some whale watching.
