Have you ever read Jon Krakauer’s “Into Thin Air” and thought, “Man I would love to climb Everest some day!”  And then you realized that you have no real high altitude experience and you certainly don’t have the $50,000 USD to lay down for the Everest climbing permits and expedition costs. Truly an elevated trip
Went on our second trip led by Ben Cubbage from Elevated Trips for a good reason, Ben and his crew know their way around western China and they know know to serve their clients well. Our tour guide Sangye was very attentive and informative at every step and every stop along our journey through the Silk Road in Gansu and Qinghai. Ben has lived in western China for over a decade and works with locals to provide authentic experiences. This time around we discovered the holy Qinghai Lake, the rainbow mountains, hanging monastery, hiked snowy mountains, saw the western end of the Great Wall and rode camels on the Gobi desert. Whether you’re looking to explore Tibetan culture, the Silk Road, or you’re a hiking junkie, Elevated Trips is the way to go.

"Silk Road" from Snow to the desert.
A trip on the tracks of the "Silk Road" from Xining via Qinghai Lake,Zhangyue, Jiayuguan to Dunhuang. From ice and snow to the desert. A super selection of sights under the guidance of a perfect tour guide. The 7 days were a great experience. This trip is not only a trip for the eyes, no also for the soul and the mind. Wishes were taken into account and the planning was adapted. I thank the organizer Ben , a great person, a trip with him is definitely an experience. In addition, our companion Sangye's for his great selection and immense knowledge. Guadonche Ben and Sangye's

      Special experience worth paying for
Ben and Sangye organised a bespoke hiking trip for us in the South-West corner of Gansu, around Langmusi in October 2020. Having visited the area previously, we were keen to focus on the hiking, rather than the area's (extraordinary and wonderful) culture. After 2 days of acclimatisation, Sangye organised 4 days of great hiking between homestays with Tibetan nomads which was a phenomenal experience. Winter came early this year but walking through snowfall and up a snow covered 4000m peak just added to the experience and we had a truly amazing time. We're typically independent travellers and thought long and hard before engaging Elevated Trips, as we paid far more for this experience than we would normally pay for a holiday. On reflection, taking into account the remoteness of the area, that the locals only speak Tibetan (not Mandarin), the challenges of getting PSB permissions and the lack of maps, marked paths etc. there is no way would could have organised this experience ourselves. In addition, Sangye's in-depth cultural and local knowledge gave us a window on local life which would otherwise have passed us by. We had an incredible time, worth every penny.

Best trip I ever had in China Mainland
I've been living in China for more than 10 years, and this is by far the best trip I ever had here. Our amazing guides Ben, Gombo and Choegon prepared an extraordinary Off-the-Beaten-Track itinerary for us. The places they took us for hiking offered stunning breathtaking sceneries, with little to no tourists at all. This was especially appreciable since we travelled during the "golden week" (national day holidays), which is traditionally infamous for its crowds. They are also really passionate and knowledgeable about the local culture, and eager to help us understand it. 10/10 would definitely recommend!

Ben Cubbage curates mystical tours of mountains and monasteries which take your breath away. As our first holiday after the pandemic we merely enrolled to go out for a trek and we finally concluded with an epic adventure, for going out for a trek, we discovered a journey within. Kathy & Soon

2 weeks of hike, local life and scenery in Qinghai, Gansu and Sichuan
Thanks to Ben and our outstanding local Guide, we had an amazing 2-week trip in Qinghai, Gansu and Sichuan. We wanted to hike, meet locals and see breathtaking sceneries and this is exactly what they had prepared for us. Sangye, our guide, is professional and highly dedicated, always adjusting to your needs, the weather, your feeling of the moment and making things go smoothly. Our driver drived safely and was very nice. This trip was our first time traveling with an agency, we usually bagpack but we had an unforgettable experience. If you want to discover the Tibetan plateau and experience the local life, travel with Elevate Trips, they will open doors you can’t open traveling alone!!

Qinghai Lake & the Silk Road... Hiking and Cultural Experience
From the booking Ben and his team were very attentive to meeting our (2 adult travellers) requested itinerary, they even suggested some additional activities and sites as our schedule changed. We described the kind of trip and activities we wanted to do, primarily hiking and learning more about the regional cultures; Ben was able to match our activity level with some great and challenging hikes. Our guide was awesome and very knowledgable. We felt very comfortable and confident travelling with him, even during covid. He was very fluent in English as well as locals languages (Mandarin and Tibetan) making the trip a great cultural experience. We never felt rushed and were able to make changes to the daily itinerary as the trip progressed. We shared lots of laughs and he made the trip truly enjoyable and memorable. In total we travelled for 9 days starting from Xining, Zhangye, Jiayuguan and ending in Dunhuang. We hiked at Qinghai Lake and the Youning Monastery; saw the Danxia Colour Mountains; Jiayuguan great wall sections and; the Mogao Gottoes. Overall, we would highly recommend Ben and Elevated Trips to any and all travellers, especially those seeking a little something off the beaten path. We will surely be travelling with them again in the future!

Youning Monastery Day Hike - Perfect Day!
Two of us travelling through Gansu and Qinghai and decided to do a day hike since we wanted to stretch our legs. Contacted Ben at Elevated Trips who was very fast in replying, giving us all the answers to our questions as well as important information in these sensitive times of travelling during Covid. Together with his team - Tashi and Gombo - they picked us up bright and early at the hotel and after visiting the Youning Monastery, we had a brief hike to a hermitage for lunch (proper hikers nosh of salami/cheese/crackers/snickers - all part of the package) and then the real work began. A beautiful, challenging slog up to a 3800m elevation ridge for some exceptional views. Can't compliment Ben and his team enough - they were professional, fun to be around and we will 100% be back to trek with Elevated trips in this stunning part of the world.

      Qinghai lake
It was a great experience to visit the largest lake in China. Great time dinning with a Tibetan family. The area is surrounded by snowy top mountains; Which I had a chance to go hiking to. During winter season, prepare for extreme cold weather, especially in the evenings and at night. Bring your camera to capture great scenery/landscapes.

Amazing cycling trip around Qinghai lake
The cycling trip around the Qinghai lake was simply amazing. Even though we decided to do the trip on very short notice, the whole trip was organized perfectly and was even adopted to our wishes. Choegon was a wonderful guide, taught us a lot about the Tibetan culture and was always supportive. We had the chance to meet wonderful people, cycle through an amazing countryside and eat delicious local food and will take home a lot of precious memories.

Thank you again to Choegon and Ben for a terrific trip around Qinghai Lake and up into the Red Rocks and Monastries. We were shown many beautiful places and accommodated in every way by our guide and new friend Choegon. We met warm and welcoming locals, especially the family we stayed with around the lake who had a healthy sense of humour. We chopped and changed the trip a bit as we went along and found nothing was too hard, everything was flexible. The region has diverse cultures and food traditions and we had a wide and delicious experience of them. Perhaps best of all was the breadth and depth of knowledge that Choegon was able to share with us as we went along. He is a real talent, and the perfect host. See you next time! 😁😁

Tibetan Plateau Adventure offers several venues for touring in China for groups as small as two to four individuals. Larger groups are also welcome. My wife and I and two friends chose a tour that involved the Chinese/Tibetan Plateau. Great hiking and spectacular views were a daily occurrence. Remarkable Monasteries rounded out a world class experience. We spent two days with Tibetan Nomads and one night in one of their tents at 13,500 feet. Understanding their culture was enriching, and the night sky at that altitude was a scene I will never forget. Brilliant. And this was only one of several unique memories I now carry with me. If you are looking for an unforgettable adventure of a lifetime with excellent value for the price, this is it. R. Leavitt
