About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- patrycjan9050 contributionsExcellent tour for a family with school-aged kids.Very well-organized tour. Our guide was knowledgeable, and shared many stories. Lunch was simple: sandwich, cookie and a drink, but definitely enough to keep everyone happy. I forgot to sign-up for lunch, and the company was nice enough to call me the day before, to make sure I had picked my favorites. It was the only tour, that let you get off the boat and explore Boldt Castle (which was amazing!!!) and Rock Island Lighthouse (which was super cute). The only complaint I have is that I wish we had 15 more minutes to walk around a huge Boldt Castle island, and 15 minutes less to walk around a very tiny Rock Island. Overall, an excellent tour!Written 26 September 2024
- Pioneer369937730090 contributionsHighly recommend this tour!was a great tour. Definitely teh number one thing to do first thing.. Our guide was very knowledgeable and his info gave us enough knowledge so we can further research teh area.Written 25 September 2024

Always answered my phone calls immediately when I was trying to decide what boat company to use. The bagged lunch was amazing! Highly recommend this family owned business.Written 19 September 2024

- jgbg78790 contributions5hour tour totally worth it!We did the 5 hour tour with Dennis and captain skip. We toured boldt castle and the rock island lighthouse. Dennis was excellent he spoke the entire time on the boat and was extremely informative. The tour came with a picnic lunch that was delicious. We had chicken fingers and mom and a blt. It came with chips, chocolate chip cookies and a drink. Very organized tour. The only downfall is we could have used more time at boldt castle. Other than that it was an amazing day!!! Highly recommendWritten 12 September 2024

- Explorer624817805170 contributionsVery Nice DayWe really enjoyed this tour! The captain and guide were great. Everyone enjoyed their picnic lunch at their leisure. I need a gluten-free lunch, so the salad and chips were fine. My husband enjoyed his sandwich and chips. The Boldt Castle (bring your headphones for a self guided tour) was beautiful, and the lighthouse had a lot of interesting history. I would definitely recommend it. Tip: we did not realize that for a small fee, we could have maybe toured the boat house. Maybe that could be considered.Written 8 September 2024

- jenns58760 contributionsBest 1000 Islands Tour!Absolutely the best tour! Our Captain and tour guide were terrific! Knowledgeable, engaging, humorous and always had our safety as a priority! The boat had a bathroom on board and seating area was comfortable. We would have liked a little more time at Bolt Castle but overall we were very pleased with everything the tour offered! Highly recommend!Written 1 September 2024
- G9511OUtracyc0 contributionsBest Boat Tour on the St Lawrence!Best boat tour on the St Lawrence! Dennis, our tour guide, was incredibly knowledgeable of the Thousand Islands and Captain Jack was fantastic! We learned so much about the Thousand Islands, thoroughly enjoyed the ride and absolutely loved touring Bolt Castle and Rock Island Lighthouse! The 5 hours went by in a flash but it allowed for plenty of time at both locations. The lunch provided was very good and eating on the boat gave us more time on the islands! We highly recommend this tour company as they are the only public tour boat permitted on Rock Island!Written 31 August 2024
- lisasS9008HZ0 contributionsFun and informative tourBrad was a great tour guide and Chuck was a great ship captain. Brad gave us so much history and stories it made the tour fly by. First stop Boldt Castle where we had a delicious picnic lunch provided by the tour. Then we toured the castle, out buildings, and the grounds before getting back on the boat and going to the Rock Island lighthouse. After some information about the history of the lighthouse and it's keepers we were able to climb to the top. It was a wonderful tour. I highly recommend it.Written 28 August 2024

- Excursion2480960 contributionsMostly a place to unwind and relax. If you do not take a boat tour there is not much to see or do in and around Clayton 1000 Islands. Panaramic views of the river and islands are pretty much non existent as homes and trees block the view all along the highways. The downtown area consists of very few blocks congested with traffic with very little parking availability. Restaurants and food fare is very limited, with hamburgers the main options. Most of the disterillies were closed while we were there. Highlight of the visit was to drive about 7 miles north to The Gals ice cream stand.Written 27 August 2024
- kimeE8170RI0 contributionsVery disappointed with the boat staff. The lighthouses and castles were great. The glass bottom boat was terrible you couldn't even see the water. The bottom of the boat was green like it hadn't been cleaned in years. I felt that I had been taken in from their advertising. (Other glass bottom boats are real, and you can see the water). The first mate on the boat was very rude. As we were heading back to the dock, he insinuated that we tip him. He was so demanding that I was irritated and will NEVER go with them again.Written 26 August 2024

Our tour started about 15 minutes late bc the boat hadn’t been prepped yet. When I booked the tour, I thought we were getting a 3.5 hour boat tour, but it was actually a 2 hour tour with an hour and a half stop at Boldt Castle. (The description did not make it clear that the castle visit was part of the 3.5 hours. It was clear that you had to pay extra for the castle, but I thought the tour stopped there and you could get off if you wanted and pick up another boat when you were done. I thought those who didn’t want to get off just continued.) Therefore, you pretty much HAVE to pay to do the Castle, otherwise you would just be sitting at the dock or on the boat for an hour and a half. That misunderstanding aside, the tour itself was very disappointing. The microphone/speaker system wasn’t working properly, so we couldn’t hear the guide without really straining. When he realized this, he and the captain tried a couple things and then gave up. Our guide decided at that point to just speak loudly, which was hard to hear with the noise of the boat. The worst part was that he turned his back to the 4 of us in the front of the boat and directed all his attention to the people in the back half. Perhaps they heard him at that point, but we certainly did not. Thus, the “tour” consisted of a man talking and us hearing little bits and pieces of fractured sentences. Even after the hour and a half stop at the mansion, nothing was fixed, so the ride back was just as frustrating. The worst part is that the guide didn’t care at all that 1/3 of his passengers weren’t getting any of the information. He basically just ignored us.

Great destination and route. Unfortunately, the weather was "occasional rain showers", which turned out to be light drizzle for a good portion of the boat ride. What was disappointing is...the boat company had at least 5 boats lined up at the dock. We got stuck with a boat with plastic transparent "windows" that rolled up/down. Meaning, as it rained, the windows got covered with droplets, making it very difficult to see out. The guide made it sound easy for him to "come over and roll up your windows", but in fact it was rather awkward calling him over to do so. It would have been MUCH BETTER had the boat company chosen one of their other (probably newer) boats that had sliding windows...at least we could have controlled how much they were open, and we could have easily slid them to take pictures, look at things, etc.
Unfortunately, something this small made a huge impact on the experience because of the rain.
Clayton Tours needs to step up their game in this instance, and also in the quality of their on-shore restrooms.

Thank you for taking our Boldt Castle and 1000 Islands Tour. We are sorry you were disappointed with touring in the rain. We have five boats, four of which have eisen glass windows that can be raised or lowered depending on the weather conditions. We have several tours daily in addition to private tours and charters. The boat with sliding windows was scheduled for a different tour or charter that day. Again, we thank you for taking our tour and although we can not control the weather, we feel that any day is a good day on the St. Lawrence River.

The tours from Clayton offer a wonderful (and possibly longer) ride on the Saint Lawrence than their competitors. First, it takes longer to get to Bolt Castle so you get to see more islands and the beautiful houses built on them. Also, you travel over waters at some pretty wide places and get the feel of how truly huge the St. Lawrence really is.
The 1 1/2 hours at Bolt was sufficient. At this time, due to Covid, Canada was closed to traffic even going under their part of the Thousand Island Bridge, so we did not get to do that...but the rest, like Millionaire Row, the Lighthouse and a host of other sites were still note worthy.
Bathroom on board. Also, a bag lunch for $10.00 was available and it was really good!!!! Free parking. Captain and one crew member (who gave the dialogue) was nice. Answered questions. Was informative. Canvas top offers shade. Roll up windows can be lowered if it rains. Hint: Take the seats that FACE the front, then you can easily look to the left and the right and get the whole panoramic view.
One con: They need to put some money back into the business. Entrance had a run-down feel to it. The restroom (located in a shack of sorts) at the ticket booth site was horrid. The same goes for the ticket booth....it was tacky. Cheaply made with plywood like a carnival booth, had no professional appeal. (The ticket lady, though, was extremely nice!)
We are glad we took this tour company over others in the area. It was affordable and offered some extra perks.

OK this is the smaller of the two main boat rides around Thousand Islands but for all that they are friendly, helpful and well worth the money. Our guide, Brad was very knowledgeable and helpful giving a great commentary and assisting with boarding and disembarkations. Sometimes the smaller family operations are more fun than the bigger companies and this was one of those occasions. We would thoroughly recommend Clayton Island Tours if you would like a very pleasant boat tour of this beautiful and interesting area.

The day started out with a bit of rain so they added canvas and plastic windows to the boat. The boat was a giant pontoon boat with a driver and guide. There was plenty of parking and checking in was easy. The guide was inexperienced and dressed like she just rolled out of bed, sweat pants and flannel shirt.
The Seaway was rough and the pontoon floor was soaking wet as water entered under the canvas. The canvas and covers were filthy.
The tour did stop at Boldt Castle for the specified amount of time, but upon return to the boat, we found our belongings moved and someone else in our seats. I guess it was necessary to tell the other guests to not touch anyone else's belongings, even though we were told we could leave our items onboard.
You get what you pay for. Maybe cleaner boats and a better guide are available at the other tour boat companies for a few bucks more.

Sad to hear your tour with us was not what you, or we, expected it to be. We never force our guests to go on a tour in the rain. Our pontoon boats do have canvas and the windows are eisenglass, which is a clear material like canvas which can be rolled up or down in inclement weather. Our boats are cleaned every morning and in between tours.

The length of the trip and the narration of the guide were very good. It was the beginning of the season, however, so a little cold in the drafty boat. But they did provide blankets. Another issue, the speaker system was not working well. Sitting in the back made it difficult to hear some of the time. Overall, though, a good experience.

From the online reservation,
To picking up the boarding ticket. Easy peasy.
The captain safely navigated the waters and our guide provided interesting and informative history of the thousand islands. You don’t find many natural story tellers anymore, but he kept our interest, was funny And informative! We hadn’t planned to tour Boldt castle when we arrived at Heart island but decided to go ahead and pay for a ticket. Beautiful island beautiful restored house. I also enjoyed seeing the floors of the castle that are not yet renovated bc you can see the construction of the walls, windows doorways etc behind the scenes so to speak.
All in all a wonderful way to spend 3.5 hours learning the history and seeing the beauty of nature (mute swans, loons, cormorant birds) and architecture of the many islands. Highly recommend.

My wife and I had a good time on our Clayton Island Tours trip to Boldt Castle. The boats are simple pontoon type boats with covered seating. Liam, our tour's narrator, was personable and entertaining. It was however sometimes difficult to hear him over the loudspeaker system. We had a lot of noisy kids on our tour and the boat was too full to find a quiet area away from them. If you are looking for a quieter relaxing tour, you may consider tours using a larger boat with multiple decks. Some seemed to have outdoor seating up top as well.
The castle was a must-see attraction if you find yourself in the area. We had about 90 minutes to look around which sounds like enough, but we really had to hurry to see much at all. There was a boat house museum we wanted to see that you can get to by water-shuttle, but we quickly ran out of time. If you really want to explore the castle, I'd recommend going by water taxi. This way you can stay as long as you like.
One thing to keep in mind, is our tour was no longer able to make the normal loop around the islands as shown on the website or brochures. Apparently this would put the boat in Canadian waters, violating their current Covid restrictions. We simply went up and back to the castle, seeing much of the same sights on the way back.
This tour is a great option for the budget-minded, groups and families. We opted for the very reasonable $10 lunch option. It was quite good. I would not hesitate to recommend it.

We enjoyed the boat ride and the knowledgeable guide and captain! However, the time allowed at the Boldt Castle grounds was too short. The Clayton Boat Tours only allowed us from 12:30-1:50 at the island. We felt very rushed and only saw part of the garden.

Thank you for touring with Clayton Island Tours on our Boldt Castle Tour. Nice ride for a nice price. We did the shorter less expensive tour, which allowed for about and hour and twenty minutes at the castle, and felt that it was enough time to see all that we wanted to see. The boat ride was about an hour or more each way. The views of the various islands and high-end homes were quite spectacular. The castle was impressive, especially seeing the vast difference in the before and after restoration. (The top two floors have not yet been restored and allow for a trip back in time to see how the castle was left way back when work was first halted.) Amazing what money and talent can do!!! I wish I could have heard the boat tour guide better. We sat in the front row of the back half of the boat, unfortunately too near to the engine, and couldn't hear much of anything. Even moving up to the front from time to time did not help much. I think this trip could have been much better if we could have heard the tour guide and if we could have asked questions knowing that we could hear the answers. Apart from that, glad we did it! Boat ride and views were worth the price.

Somewhat difficult. The dock leading to the boat is accessible via a crushed stone path, the dock itself is multi level, and the boat is accessible from the dock only via a two-step portable walk-up thingy.

Does the price include the castle tour?
Written 5 September 2019
It is a separate admission price to Boldt Castle. However, you can purchase the Boldt Castle tickets at the Uncle Sam Boat tour window. Just ask for both. The cost of the Two Nation Tour and Boldt Castle was $33.50 for an adult.

What is the total duration of the tour including touring boldt castle and heart island? estimate at least plse.
Written 22 August 2019
After completing the two hour boat tour you can be dropped off at Boldt Castle and stay as long as you want. (I think the last boat picks up at the castle around 7pm). I have always toured the castle and grounds at my own pace without tour guides. Tour boats continually arrive to take you back to Alex Bay where you boarded. I’d plan on spending 1 - 2 hrs touring the castle and grounds.
