- Stephen S0 contributionsI recommend.Ilene was very knowledgeable and made it fun. Enjoyed the lunch by the sea Ilene recommended. We enjoyed visiting the greenhouse at the Estate.Written 23 February 2025
- Joe L0 contributionsFantastic day in Dunedin.Wow, what a great tour experience. Astra was wonderful to work with in organizing a private tour for our group. Then in our group’s opinion, Teresa knocked it out of the park with the tour she provided. Her love and knowledge of Dunedin was contagious. We had an incredibly fun day and will always have very fond memories of Dunedin thanks to Fantail Tours. Highly recommend!Written 22 February 2025
- Philip_Cools0 contributionsLovely tourThis tours runs for about 6 hours, so you have a fun-filled day! Our driver/guide was Teresa, and she is just great: a lot of knowledge and very lovely person. After some highlights in Dunedin we drove to the Peninsula to view the albatross colony. A bit windy and chilly when we got there but the most amazing view of the cliff. A recommended tour if you're visiting Dunedin for the day.Written 22 February 2025
- v90jle0 contributionsOverton House and Larnach CastleGreat tour! Scott our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about Dunedin. We had plenty of time to see the sites scheduled and even had a few impromptu photos stops. We chose to do the Larnach castle tour which was an added bonus. Would highly recommend this tour.Written 10 February 2025
- _ttotaylor0 contributionsTheresa is the best!Wow, wow, wow! What a great tour. Theresa was absolutely amazing! Such a wealth of knowledge! She took us everywhere! We went to the botanical garden, the train station, the steepest street in the world, Otago university, Pukekara headlands, and the Royal Albatross colony. She gave us so much information and we had a really delightful day with her. Outstanding tour guide and outstanding tour! Thank you, Thank you! We even got to see a little blue penguin when we got back to our ship. A great day!Written 8 February 2025
- Brian M0 contributionsLovely tourWe joined the 2 hour Dunedin city tour. Our guide Asta picked us up from our hotel and took us to a number of sights in Dunedin including Baldwin Street, the botanic gardens, signal hill and the train station. Asta was very knowledgeable and friendly. We enjoyed the tour as there were only 4 of us in our group and we would not have been able to visit all these venues without the guide.Written 7 February 2025
- John W0 contributionsA great day in DunedinWe had a fabulous day of touring Dunedin. Our guide, Asta, was very knowledgeable of the area and showed us all of the sites including the Albatross rookery and OPERA penguin conservation center. Of course, we saw all of the famous sites like the botanical garden, the railroad station and the steepest street in the world. Asta organized our tour in a very efficient manner that enabled us to see everything in a short period of time. Her van was very comfortable and equipped with a speaker system that enabled everyone to hear her informative commentary. To top it off, she is very charming. We could not have asked for a better one day visit to Dunedin.Written 28 January 2025
- jonfF6639NX0 contributionsBOOK THIS TOUR!This was a fantastic tour. Our guide, Asta was everything we could want. We let her set most of the agenda, and were glad we did; she covered a variety of points of interest, She was highly knowledgeable about all aspects related to Dunedin: geography, history, botany, native birds, etc. She was highly personable and cheerful, and a good driver as wellWritten 14 January 2025
- claudia r0 contributionsFantastic!Could not have been more pleased. Asta spent the day showing us all the best spots. She was so kind, funny, and knowledgeable. One of the best day tours we have taken in many years!! Thank you Asta!Written 12 January 2025

- BKTulsa0 contributionsRoyal Albatross & city tourOur cruise ship was arriving in Port Chalmers / Dunedin, New Zealand on Boxing Day. Our shore excursion had been cancelled as many places were closed for Boxing Day. And the remaining cruise ship shore excursions did not include a visit to the Royal Albatross Center, home to the world's only mainland breeding colony of Royal Albatross. While the ship offered a small boat cruise to the cliff below the Center, you were still hundreds of feet away from the nests & subject to the weather & rough seas. We wanted front row seats that were not weather dependent. From tour companies in other ports, we were fortunate enough to be referred to Fantail Tours. Not only would Fantail Tours take us to the Royal Albatross Center, they would coordinate a guided tour & lunch. And since the scenic drive to & from (it's 40 minutes drive from Dunedin), the Center tour & lunch took just 3+ hours, Fantail could custom design the rest of our tour to see all the historic sites & anything else we wanted to do. The entire tour was perfect. Asta the guide was friendly & informative. Their vehicle clean & safely driven. Places we wished to linger, we could. Very flexible. The Botantical Gardens are beautiful. The mild climate allows plants & shrubs to prosper. Their rhondendrons grow to the size of trees! We also saw the steepest street in the world and the beautiful Railway Station, the second most photographed building in the Southern Hemisphere. All narrated & wonderful. But the highlight was the Royal Albatross Center. What magnificent birds! Their wingspan can reach 3 meters (9'6") and can fly at speeds up to 120 kph (75mph). They fly from Dunedin to the seas offshore of Chile nonstop for a year before returning to Dunedin to breed. We received a guided tour & presentation at the Center and we're escorted to the enclosed observation building of the Colony Nesting site observation building; just 100 feet from away from the colony! I highly recommend Fantail!Written 27 December 2024
- LeeceLouLou0 contributionsSmall tours win again! This was the perfect tour! With only five of us in the van, two separate families, our tour guide was able to adjust the schedule to suit everyone's interests. 2 hours might have initially felt like a short time, but we saw so much and learned so much. It never felt rushed. My mum had been to Dunedin twice before and was delighted to see and learn things she hadn't already on other tours. Asta's local knowledge and passion for Dunedin were obvious. I loved hearing about Munuka honey and Dunedin's core industry, the university. I personally loved the time taken in the Botanic gardens and the university. The stop at the stadium was clearly a highlight for our other tour family and something we may have missed otherwise. Brilliant! If you have any special requests, I truly believe Fantail Tours will accommodate. Please don't hesitate to ask.Written 20 December 2024
- musicalmskitty0 contributionsPerfect tour for a family!Asta was a fantastic guide for our family - professional, friendly and very considerate of our smallest traveller, a very exuberant 2 year old. This was a brilliant tour for those with just a day in port, we were collected from the cruise terminal and treated to the sights of Dunedin before being brought right back to the ship - and with a car seat for our daughter! We had lots of flexibility to stop for as long or as short as we wanted, which was perfect for our needs.Written 8 December 2024
- rongn20220 contributionsMs Rong NingThe scenery is picturesque but the fog is too thick to see. This is the only regret. The castle and the ancient house are well preserved and worth seeing. The tour guide was very nice and enthusiastic. Overall we were very satisfied. Especially the 10-person group was more comfortable than the larger group.Written 27 November 2024
- Trek1134380 contributionsEnjoyable day tour.Asta was a friendly and knowledgeable guide who provided our small family group of 6 with a great schedule for our day tour around Dunedin and the peninsula. She ensured we were back well before our cruise boarding time I would recommend this tour to others.Written 22 November 2024

We had a great day with Asta from Fantail tours. Only six of us, so we were able to do more and see things more closely than a bigger tour. Several of the group walked the steepest street, we were given good pointers for lunch and saw much on the peninsular. Then there were the penguins with OPERA. This was excellent and the guide let us stay longer when a penguin just appeared out of the bush and walked and jumped to be with its friends. Magic moment. A really good tour. We recommend it.

The bus driver was easy to find at the meeting point.
She did a great job showing us around the area. You could tell from her enthusiasm that she really loved her job and the area. I am sorry I cannot remember her name but her husband does tours through the company as well. During our 2 week cruise she was by far the best tour guide that we had. She even extended the time of the tour to ensure that we were able to see everything that she wanted to show us and gave us a flower that she made herself when we left.
The penguin reserve was nice. There is a lot of walking over uneven surfaces. I don't think they really see the yellow eyed penguins very much because there are only a few. We did though see one small blue penguin in his house. The guides that showed us around were very good and knowledgeable. The scenery was breathtaking.

Thank you for taking your time to write a thorough feedback.
Yellow Eyed Penguin are the most endangered penguins in the world. You are right, the numbers of these rare penguins are very small and sometimes you don't see any of them in the wild during the guided tour of the reserve. Especially if they don't have a reason to stay on land - they are not going through their annual moult, are not nesting, etc.
This tour is about learning all about these endangered birds, about the challenges they are going through, what work is being done by OPERA to help them, visiting their habitat.
You see a variety of wildlife on this walk, NZ fur seals, Little Blue Penguins in their nests, sometimes sea lions on the beach. Yellow Eyed Penguins can be often seen from very close up in their rehab centre where the injured and malnourished birds are getting extra help before they are released into the wild.
Thank you for you kind words about our tour guide and her knowledge you enjoyed. We are very happy to hear that.

My husband and I were on a cruise ship stopping for one day in Dunedin and chose this tour as it would give us a general overview of Dunedin and Otago Peninsula with the limited time we had and included a visit to the Penquin Rehabilitation Centre. Theresa was our fabulous tour guide picking us up from Port Chalmers. We were part of a small group of about 12 people. The only negative was that seating was just a little tight with four of us sitting in the back seat so was a bit uncomfortable.
It was clear Theresa was very passionate about Dunedin and worked hard to ensure we got the most out of this tour. Her knowledge of Dunedin and commentary was excellent.
We stopped off at Signal Hill Lookout to get the cameras clicking with beautiful views of the city and surrounding areas, the lovely Botanical Gardens, Baldwin Street - the world’s steepest street (we were happy to just take photos and not tempted to walk it!) and then we set off for the Otago Peninsula taking in the stunning scenery on the way.
This tour included a 90 minute drop off at the Penguin Place Rehabilitation Centre for sick penguins. I’m so glad we did this as having little knowledge of penguins, it was quite fascinating to learn about their lifecycle and the rehabilitation process. George and Saskia were our tour guides there and it certainly pulled at the heartstrings to see the great work they do with these wonderful little birds. We saw many penguins here in various stages of rehabilitation.
After a very interesting talk given by George, we were taken by bus to the Reserve (need good sturdy walking shoes and there were quite a lot of steps). We didn’t see any penguins in the wild at the Reserve, due to the time of year but saw quite a few seals and fabulous scenery with interesting commentary from Saskia. After the penquin tour concluded, Theresa picked us up and we had an enjoyable trip back to the port, passing by the Dunedin University and other iconic buildings.
Thanks Theresa for a very enjoyable tour.

Who can tell about what to expect on the tour better than our visitors.
We are glad to hear you enjoyed Teresa's tour guiding and learning about penguins.
Sorry to hear about seating being not very comfortable. We are looking into better vehicle options for the next season.

We booked this tour from the cruise port and was so excited as all the reviews were fantastic…it was underwhelming to say the least. We made a couple of stops in town and wasn’t crazy impressed with any of them. The penguin tour was great the people there did an amazing job and they deserve 5 stars! This was a 7 hour tour and usually on such a long tour and for such a high price some sort of lunch would be provided…one was not. Instead we made a stop at a supermarket and told to go get a lunch ourselves. I feel that what we paid and what we did did not match in the slightest. A tour like this I’d likely pay $50 for not $220.

Thank you for your feedback.
Sorry to hear you were disappointed by our tour.
Lunch is not included in our tour price and the description of the tour states that.
Our tour is tightly packed with sightseeing and there is not enough time to stop for a big lunch. Our tour guide either stops at a local bakery for a freshly made sandwich or for a quick snack at the Albatross center cafe to take away.
The tour price includes an entry fee to Penguin Place ($58), covers a knowledgeable tour guide wages, GST, vehicle running costs etc.
Great to hear you enjoyed the Penguin Place.

It was a fantastic tour guided by Heike, who is friendly and resourceful. Along the drive to Otago Peninsula, Heike gave us detailed and interesting explanations of the history, characteristics and scenic spots of Dunedin. Besides the highlights in the city, we were impressed by the beautiful scenery of the Peninsula. Heike's good time management enabled us to complete the tour with high satisfaction. It was amazing to see seals at the coast and blue penguins in the nests. Although we were not lucky enough to see the very rare wild yellow-eyed penguins at the shore, we could see the one kept by the Reserve in close distance. The 6-hour tour was fun and rewarding!

Tour guide is fantastic. Scenery amazing and places of interest are interesting. Vehicle is a mini-bus that fits all passengers comfortably. Great time spent and even though it is not cheap it is well worth it if you only have a day in Dunedin

With limited time in Dunedin (cruise ship) my husband and I would recommend this tour. Therese was our driver and guide for this very informative and thorough tour of Dunedin and it's environs. Her knowledge of the area was extensive and her passion was evident. The minivan we travelled in with Therese was a bit tight in the back seat for four adults. The countryside was picturesque and there were ample stops for photos. Therese kindly made a quick stop for us to grab some lunch to eat before our tour at the penguin reserve started. We really enjoyed visiting the penguin reserve and rehabilitation area. Saskia took us on a tour of the reserve which was a very scenic coastal location. We are glad we chose to spend our day sightseeing in Dunedin with Therese and Fantail Tours.

The penguin Centre and the commentary were the highlights.
Time allocation was poor. You were unable to experience and fully appreciate major attractions. Especially Baldwin St and Dunedin railway. Also you need to select an appropriate location to purchase and enjoy lunch, rather than eating it on your lap on the bus.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the commentary of our knowledgeable tour guide and a visit at Penguin reserve.
Our tours are designed to accommodate cruise ship passengers who have only a short day in the city and would like to see as much as they can.
We will look into adjusting the itinerary to allow a little bit of time for lunch when we prepare for the next season.

Excellent tour guides. Small group of 8, he asked what we were interested in and made a point to ensure we saw/learned about what we were interested in. Went out of his way and made an extra stop for a client, and took us by a grocery store for snacks.

Hi, is this tour good for bringing a 2-year old child with stroller?
Written 12 March 2023
I would say no. It is a long day and the bus is small. The penguin tour is not suitable for strollers as well.
