Itinerary
- 1820 State Highway 6, Queenstown 9371, New ZealandWe meet at the Cellar Door at the Winery
- 1This iconic experience includes a visit within New Zealand's largest wine cave. Informative and fun, this is a must-do activity to gain a true understanding of Central Otago wine. Your Cellar Door host will also take you to the region's first vines, originally planted by our founder and wine pioneer Alan Brady in 1983. This tour lasts 30 minutes and includes three delicious wine tastings of our current releases.
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- HannahWei80 contributionsWine and cheese taste experienceI was not expecting much, but this wine tasting gives me more than I expected! The wine and cheese tasting was one on one as the other person did not show up. The instructor gave me clear explanation on each wine of how to smell it and taste wine first and then cheese. Overall, it is fun experience. They also have transport from central Queenstown, and you can book it directly from their website, which save me a lot of time. If you have special needs, you can discuss it with the driver to see how to meet it. Perfect place to relax before my evening flight back to Wellington. I would definitely go back to visit when I'm in Queenstown next time. Keep up the good work 👏 🙌Written 21 January 2025
- JamesE5340 contributionsTotally uninspiring and disappointing wine tasting - awful serviceVisited for wine tasting whilst doing wine trail. What a disappointment - basically ‘thrown’ tasting tray and told to scan QR code for tasting notes that’s it. No atmosphere no interaction nothing. Go to Kinross instead where they do it properlyWritten 18 January 2025
- neyhaap0 contributionsGood wine tasting and avoid the CheeseryThe wine tasting was amazing, great experience with all in the garden…. The cheesery was disappointing we were planning to buy some for the evening not enjoy with wine but the asian lady serving was rude and not interested in helping anyone at all.Written 8 January 2025
- Trail312572939070 contributionsTasty Cheese & Delightful WinesThe review was great! Maddie was an amazing guide who went above and beyond for our group. We also got food at the restaurant before the tasting & it was delicious!Written 5 January 2025
- 768tanjina0 contributionsGreat wine and food!Really cool experience! We opted for a pickup from the CBD, and our driver, George, was so kind and pointed out some interesting places on the way to the winery. Highly recommend checking out the cheesery and have a meal at their restaurant (the quality of food is top notch). The wine tour itself was very informative and the wine cave is really cool (quite literally). Tasted 4 different types of wine, and it tasted so fresh.Written 29 December 2024
- SarahB6969680 contributionsFab experience!Great experience! Loved the property, it was beautiful and the staff were all helpful. We had a winery tour with Catherine and she was really friendly and knowledgeable, helping us to understand more about the wine and the region. Would recommend!Written 12 December 2024

- wolf09100 contributionsOverpriced and Overhyped – Disappointing ExperienceUnfortunately, my visit to Gibbston Valley was quite disappointing. I had high expectations based on the reputation of this vineyard, but the experience fell short in almost every way. No Real Tour – Just a Tasting: Despite being marketed as a tour, what we actually received was just a wine and cheese tasting. There was no tour of the vineyard, winery, or cellar, and absolutely no behind-the-scenes insights into the winemaking process, which was a major letdown. The whole experience felt very commercialized, and it didn’t live up to the immersive experience we were hoping for. Expensive and Not Worth It: The experience was overpriced for what was offered. We paid a premium price, but in return, we only got a few small pours of wine and some cheese, with little explanation or effort from the staff to make it feel special. For what they charge, I expected much more, including a proper tour and better service. Commercialized Feel: The whole thing felt very commercialized. The personal touch and passion you expect from a boutique vineyard were missing. Instead, it felt like we were just another group shuffled through quickly, with little care or attention to making it a memorable experience. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this experience. It’s overpriced and lacks the depth and personal touch that you would expect from a vineyard visit. If you’re expecting a true tour or insight into winemaking, you’ll be left disappointed. You can get much better wine-tasting experiences elsewhere in the region.Written 19 October 2024

This was a wonderful experience, and the wines tasted were lovely, thank you.Written 7 May 2024
- 366rogerw0 contributionsAmazing views on a fun bike ride through cracking wineland! My friend and I spent a half day on e-bikes hired from Gibbston Valley winery, touring from Arrowtown to the winery and on to the end of the valley on great paths with amazing scenery, -stopping at wineries along the way. It is incredibly well set up, we had lunch at Gibbston valley winery and included their cave tour which was an interesting experience too. The team at Gibbston Valley were amazing, particularly Jason, who went above and beyond to make sure our day on the bike was exceptional!Written 5 May 2024

We had a fantastic experience at Gibbston Valley, we booked the cave tour with transport option and were picked up from Queenstown by Ronan - he was lovely and seemed to be a man of many talents working in all areas of the Vineyard. We then went on a tour of the cave with Bindi and were lucky enough to be the only ones on the tour! It was fantastic and Bindi was very knowledgeable - she really made the experience fun.
After the tour we enjoyed the platter (which was superb) and a glass of our favorite wine in the bar area before catching the transport back to Queenstown with Ronan. We would definitely recommend Gibbston Valley, any of the package options would be fantastic! The wine produced here is excellent and easy to see why they have won so many awards. We are looking forward to coming back.

Would highly recommend this short but informative tour. Our host Bindy was the star of the show and we would come again just because of her. We were a large group of 30+ and from booking to arriving everything was an ease. Will definitely be back

We had an excellent experience for the 10am cave tour on 19th June 2022, with a lovely Chinese lady, who followed the cave tour with a wonderful wine tasting. there was great friendliness. it was lovely to see the first vines planted in Otago and the largest wine cave in NZ. We became club members and the cost of the cave tour was refunded which was a nice touch.

I will not return to Gibbston Valley with a group. We were 5 minutes late with a group and they had scheduled us for 30 minutes for a tasting in the cave, and they said we were too late because there was another group right behind us. Who schedules cave tours and tasting s for just 30 minutes (for a group of 19)?? But it was the eye-rolling server who really put me off. I know it’s the height of tourist season but…we’re the reason you have a job! Be respectful or we can go elsewhere.

We booked the cave tour 11am slot and were late by approximately 20 minutes. They said we missed the tour as we were late and the best they could do was to offer us a wine tasting (to taste the wine that we would have tasted in the cave), fair enough. But the lady sounded condescending and showed no interest in introducing the wine(s) during the wine tasting. Service was poor, all the staffs were not really helpful nor friendly. I understand that we were late for our tour but you could at least give us a little bit more attention and be more genuine with your customers during the wine tasting session. The wine tasting lasted less than 10 minutes, by the way.

Our group of 45 visited Gibbston Valley Winery on a cold, rainy Monday morning, and despite the weather, we had a really great experience. The highlight of our visit was the fascinating wine cave tour. Our knowledgeable guides shared insightful information about the winemaking process, which truly enhanced our appreciation for the wines we tasted.
Following the tour, we warmed up at the cellar door, where we were greeted by a welcoming open fireplace. The cozy ambiance was perfect for enjoying the excellent selection of wines. Each wine we sampled was a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of Gibbston Valley Winery.
For large groups, Gibbston Valley Winery is an ideal destination. The staff managed our group seamlessly, ensuring everyone had a fantastic time. We highly recommend Gibbston Valley Winery for its exceptional tours, warm hospitality, and superb wines.

My wife and I visited the Gibbston Valley winery on the Easter weekend in 2024 for the wine cave tour. We didn’t realise that they don’t sell alcohol during Easter.
Fortunately the tour included 3 tastings which cost $25 a head.
It’s a great little winery.

Our tour guide Bindy was an absolute legend. She was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and made everyone on the tour feel like we were part of the club. Hearing about the history of the winery was fascinating, and we found NZ's oldest wine cave absolutely enchanting. Well worth the cost of admission, we're forever fans of Gibbston after our experience.

I was interested in visiting this winery as their 2000 Pinot Noir was the first non-French wine to win the world's Gold Medal Trophy. They are one of the top three regions in the world to grow Pinot Noir grapes. They also excel in Chardonnay and their cave is the largest in New Zealand. They have a good selection of fine wines to taste and although their restaurant was closed, they had an on-site pizza van that served fire-oven pizzas that were delicious.

Myself and some of my friends did the cave tour as part of a multiple winery tour for my birthday in the weekend.
None of us had ever been on a wine tour so we had the greatest time seeing the cave and trying a variety of wine!
We had Bindy running our tour, who was super informative and had an extensive knowledge on the history of not only the wines, but the winery and background information on the cave. She was the highlight of any tour we had, very friendly and made us all want to come back for another tour. Absolutely lovely girl!!
Couldn’t recommend Bindy or the cave tour enough! We will be back!!!
