For lovers of the film more so the the book. Yes it was over priced, but it was great to see the sets and props. The lunch was also good, but would recommend the dinner, but make sure you book at least a few months before visiting, as whe we booked 1 month in advance the dinner was fully booked out.

Was a rather expensive experience.
We went late afternoon which was less crowded as a lot of people were leaving as we arrived. Even though it was late afternoon it was quite busy, every tour was full, a tour left every 10 minutes.
Our guide, Brooke was great, friendly and knowledgeable.
We didn't get much chance to take good photos, they were rushed photos because no sooner had our guide stopped to tell us about the bit we were standing at the next tour group were coming up behind, so our guide then moved us on.
The paths around Hobbiton were uneven and not very wide.
I have mobility problems (not good with stairs, hills and I walk quite slowly), I struggled to keep up with the group and it was too steep for me to see Bagend, so I waited in the party lawn whilst the rest of the group went up to Bagend.
Our coach driver was really nice and kept telling me to take my time getting on and off the coach.
One of the things I found quite frustrating was 'The Shires Rest', I had to send my son with my phone to take pictures of the menus and food counters in the cafe because the cafe was up a flight of stairs, there was NO mobility access, then I sent my husband to the cafe to get me what I wanted.
The gift shop was very expensive, there wasn't really any pocket money items that a young child could purchase.
All in all it was interesting and lovely to see, it was good but not wow!

Free parking at The Shires Rest cafe with parking attendants. Felt safe to leave my suitcases in the car. There is a gift shop, cafe and small bar (wine $9 a glass) My tour was at 1pm, and the bus was completely full from the shires rest to the set. I think there are probably around 40 people on each tour. However it is still possible to get photos without other people in them. The bus ride is very short and you watch a video (no captions). My tour guide knew a lot about the filming process and the sets and gave interesting information. The beers at the end of the tour were delicious. My tour was the 2 hour 1pm tour. We were back on the bus at 2:45 and back in the shires rest car park by 2:55. They run a tight ship. Drink your beer quickly! Overall, enjoyable. Glad I did it.

Finally after reading the books in my teens 4 times and watching the movie 3 times, we finally decided to fork out the over the top price and zip down SH1 to visit Frodo & friends. After a great lunch at the Velodrome in Cambridge, we just made it to the venue after getting stuck behind a tractor for the last 10Km doing 38km/hr max. Must have been a neighboring farmer who didn't get a slice of the golden egg when Peter J was looking for movie sites! Anyway its a slickly run operation where everyone is herded onto buses and transported to the actual shire 7 minutes away & then after being read the riot act to stay with our guide at all times and to not tempt the gates of hell if you strayed or 'gasp', walked on the grass!!!, we get to admire the 'houses' from the outside dirt path. There's a wealth of interesting information from our guide on the filming of the movie and how the sets were proportioned to Hobbit scale & how the big tree was actually man-made and how each of the 2500 leaves had to be repainted to the correct shade of green. The end of the tour ended with free beer, cider or ginger beer which was great. Overall it just felt a little deflated that for the money, it was essentially just a stroll through a very pretty park with some nicely painted house frontages which in the end started to look all the same. Would have been nice to get inside one of the homes or perhaps meander through a small museum with Hobbit memorabilia. Back on the bus and 7 minutes down the road to the ticket office / carpark where the next bus load of tourist are already all queued for the next Hobbit tour.
Can ticked this off the list but for the money, it could offer much much more for the LOTR fan.

I was thrilled when we managed to snag late tickets for the 2 hour Hobbiton bus tour. My joy soon turned to impatience and then dismay. Each bus tour leaves every ten minutes and there are about thirty in each group. Our guide was a nice man, kind, but only had four stories to tell about Hobbiton and the filming. That took up about five minutes. But there was so much more time to fill! Each hobbit hole has us waiting about five minutes, then each family group took turns posing in front of it. It was chaotic, made worse by our group, which was 75% non-English speaking. Then we had to wait even longer to avoid the bridal party that had rented the park that day. The sets are lovely, and full of thoughtful details, but I’m sure you can find better ways to spend $360 and two hours.

As a big Tolkien fan it was quite special to see. The set was much larger than I thought - the walk through takes approximately two hours. Although they may push through a large number of people in a day it is very well run and does not seem crowded - you have plenty of time to wander through the set with the guide and take pictures as you see fit.
You end up in the famous Green Dragon Pub where you have a nice cold pint served by your guide (non alcohol drinks are available as well).

Unlike most North American theme parks or attractions the food is actually good and very reasonably priced. If you want to make sure you are on time before your scheduled start its very nice to arrive early for a snack or lunch at the cafe which is at the entrance/start and you can also browse the gift shop to pass time.

This was our 6th Hobbiton tour and 3rd night tour over the past 6 years. Each one is unique and magical. During this tour Sonny was exceptional. He was extremely informative with lots of "behind the scenes" stories. He was also cleverly humorous. We had an EXCEPTIONAL tour and will do the night tour again when we return to NZ hopefully next year. Thank you so much for creating such an experience especially for those of us who are dedicated LOTR and Tolkein fans!!

We have been on the regular tour and the 2nd breakfast tour, but the night tour is off the charts. It is well worth the extra cost. It includes a day tour, an amazing banquet and the night tour all of which lasts about 4 hours. Seeing Hobbiton at night knowing there are Hobbits in their Hobbit Holes (okay use your imagination) having their meals while we stroll outside to see the lighted Hobbit Holes was magical. There may be a surprise or two which i will not spoil and each tour is different.

If you are a Tolkein fan this is a bucket list activity.

Why 16 of us who knew nothing about the story and grew up near the Hollywood studios thought we should definitely plan an excursion out to hobbiton was somewhat baffling but that we did.
First, the drive from the port was beautiful as are most excursions in New Zealand. Then the sheep farm up close and personal with real farmers was fun. The tour is very well guided and the sets are maintained beautifully. It sits within a working farm. The flowers and gardens are beautiful. It is well organized and efficient but not rushed.
The only criticism is that you are waiting in an overpriced cafe and gift shop ahead of the tour for about 30 minutes. For hobbit fans you probably know what you’re looking at and want to buy. For others, let me see it first

We are avid LOTR fans, both of the books and the movies. We live in Tauranga so it’s just a quick drive over the Kaimais and we’re at the site from which you leave to go on the tour. That site is really set up with parking guides, a lovely ice cream shop, a souvenir shop, a bar, a cafe and really nicely clean toilets. I felt that the prices were okay - you didn’t feel like you were being gouged as you do in some tourist spots. The tour itself was one to remember. We had a very enthusiastic guide (Dominic) who was friendly and very knowledgeable about both Hobbiton and the LOTR and Hobbit movies. The whole place is absolutely idyllic and a cold ale at The Green Dragon was just the ticket at the end of the tour. If they offered an Airbnb/accommodation package at the venue, we both commented that we would love to stay and have a meal and a night “under the hill”. Would completely recommend this tour to anyone with only one caution - we had a few toddlers in our group and they were very well behaved but by the end they were becoming extremely tired so would recommend a stroller and lots of snacks etc in case they couldn’t quite make it. Thank you to Sir Peter and the Alexander family for making this possible. It’s a little slice of paradise!

Our tour guide was AMAZING. His enthusiasm for the books, movies, and all things LOTR/Hobbit was infectious. Even if you haven't read the books, or see the movies you will love this tour.

The scenery is incredible, perfect Instagram and photo opportunities, the stories of Peter Jacksons fastidious filming requirements and the imagery and film magic adds an appreciation to the magic that is the series.

For a family pass it was just over $200 - which given all we saw and experienced is DEFINITELY worth it.
