      Horrendous on every level
Absolute garbage. Always late. If you enter the platform only to find out that the train is late, which has been pretty much every time I’ve taken bart this year, then decide to change your mind, they will still charge you about 7$. No apologies. Today it’s running about 20 minutes late (that’s optimistically, assuming it will actually arrive) due to “wet weather”. Wet weather in San Francisco! Apparently this qualifies for extreme circumstances. The result of this for me is that I’ll miss my Caltrain and will be about 2 hours late for work. My alternative is to take a 60$ Uber + tip + that 7$ fee that Bart won’t reimburse. Astonishingly bad.

      Extinct business model walking
A terrible system unfit for the 21st century. I would like to question why a couple can't tap in together. I would like to question why a customer service attendant should give us so much grief. Fix your system or be bought out. Let private have a chance....

      Cheap airport transportation
We took the train from SFO airport to Powell Street as our hotel was near Union Square. Get clipper card added to your Apple wallet and load up money. We paid $10 each. Quick and convenient.

      Convenient and reasonably priced
The BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is a light rail system serving 50 stations in the San Francisco area of California. When we arrived at San Francisco International Airport (Wed August 9 2023) we found the BART ticket machine confusing to use. Unlike other ticketing machines we have encountered across the U.S., you insert the cash before you select which ticket you want. This requires you, not the machine, to do the calculation of cost. So much for machines taking over the world. This caused some mild anxiety, as we loaded the machine up with $42 and if we got the wrong option, then they would have had our money. Thankfully all was well. There was a sign saying ‘No clipper passes’, some kind of ticket which can be used on several forms of transport, however this didn’t concern us. To further complicate things, the machine happened to be cash only. Our round trip ticket from the Airport to Powell Street in Downtown San Francisco on the red line was $21 per person - much cheaper than an Uber at $50 each way. With the BART you really pay with time. Our journey in took us around 50 mins (including waiting on board at the airport station and Millbrae). Inside the carriage we found the electronic displays in each carriage and audible announcement for each station very helpful. Blue seats are for general use while the few green seats are reserved with a sign proclaiming: “Federal law requires these seats be made available to seniors and persons with disabilities.” On our return to San Francisco Airport (Sun August 13 2023), we boarded our train at Powell Street via the elevator on the dodgy Market Street. Like on our arrival, there was a gentleman sat inside. We asked him why and he explained it was for security as there had previously been a lot of crime in the elevators. After a very quick chat we tried to give him a gratuity and he politely declined, saying: “It is my pleasure. It’s what I do.” We quickly found our platform despite the lackage of signage and route maps (which would give you confidence you were T the right place) and had a short 6 minute wait for the Airport train. The BART trains are very long, with some consisting of 10 carriages. You could (if you so wished) walk between them through the interconnecting doors. The carriages we rode in were clean and bright but we felt more on edge underground on our return trip to the airport knowing what we now knew about San Francisco. When you’re lumbered with bags and suitcases carrying all your valuables in one place you are vulnerable. Was it worth the $42 round trip ticket price for two adults compared to the potential Uber fees of $100? Well we had no issues with any crazies, thankfully, and the return trip was only 30 minutes, so in this instance everything worked out fine.

      Drugs on train
Drugs, weed, and cigarette smoking was everywhere and in every train. I included a picture of a guy with a weapon riding my train. He's very high.

      Easy Trip to Downtown
I traveled from the SFO airport into town. It was very easy. The Powell St. station is blocks from Union Square. (Also the first/last stop of a cable car route)

      Necessary Rapid Transit
I used to commute on this system and complained all the time because that was commuting. Now I use BART for errands and pleasure and I have few complaints. They are trying very hard to keep it clean and safe and that is a hard job. Mostly successful. BART is very much needed to take cars off the road and to move us quickly across the Bay and to the airport, etc. It is a treasure.

      BART SFO to Downtown
If you are 65+, be sure to contact BART before your visit in order to obtain a Senior Clipper Card. You'll save quite a bit as you travel around the city. The train was clean, instructions for using the Clipper Card on the internet easy to understand. More info at ClipperCard.com.

      Needs updating/cleaning
The Cheapest way of getting from SFO airport to the city $10 one way with a clipper card ($3 for the card which can be topped up) Yes its not the cleanest at the moment, work on it SFO. Staff excellent helped me get the card loaded at the machine at Powell St station. IT does its job, maybe just showing its age, especially as this could be the first impression of SFO a tourist gets.

      Airport Transportation Option
The BART is most useful for tourists as a means of getting from the airport into the city rather than getting around the city which is better served by buses, cable cars and street cars. There is a Bart station near Union Square

      Stinks
The trains could be cleaned. Really dirty seats, and walls and windows, We took an older train, and there was no lighted reader board notifying riders of the next stop. The PA system was so terrible we could not hear the driver. It was our first time on Bart, so we had no idea what the stops were. The Bart station elevators stink to high heaven. There was pee all over the walls. The Bart station at Mission and 16th was really scarey. Tons of homeless people hanging around, and yelling. It was cheap, as we got the Senior Clipper card rate, it delivered us to where we needed to be, but that's the best I could say about it.

      Rude staff
Awful experience with a rude staff. Not helping tourists to understand how to pay the bus. Not making any effort to help. Not welcoming at All. Took 3 times the 130 and 150, and horrible

      Absolutely horrible
All of these reviews are accurate!! If you are thinking of taking the train, just DONT!!!! This was our first time here and will be our last!! Overpriced, delays with no real redirection, the smell of urine and marijuana is UNREAL and OVERWHELMING, filthy floors and stained seats (blood or poop- you decide), the mentally ill and homeless live here, and man the awful screeching noise (my finger were in my ears for most of the ride) We (2 ppls) went from the Airport to Powell and paid $21..Uber was $30..take the Uber!!!!!

Good convenient place to go around SF
Used the transit system to get around SF. It was convenient and safe especially from SFO airport to downtown SF. A little pricey but prefer this over UBER. Pack some paitence since there will be delays and consider a clipper card.

Negative reviews of Bart (dirty cars, sketchy riders) proved wrong, at least on my rides. Bought senior ticket for $9 (has a total value of $24) which got me a round-trip ticket to SF near the Moscone Center. Train was clean, passengers were everyday people, ticket agents very helpful. Beat the traffic and beat the high cost of taxi or Uber into SF. My only complaint is that Bart doesn't go to many of the places I wanted to get to, though the MUNI buses did.

We bought our Clipper transfer voucher online while we were travelling in the USA, it said that it would work on all forms of transport. It did this we used it to transfer from the airport on BART to the hotel, on vintage trams, cable cars, local and long distance buses and ferries. It made life very easy. However you cannot top it up online if you do not have an address in the US and this must match your credit card. You can however use Walgreens to topup at the counter, very easy. There are some machines but these may have a minimum top-up ($100 at the ferry). You show the voucher on your phone to the information desk at the airport just before you enter the BART terminal at the airport, very easy, just under $10 to Union Square. It is easy to use and you get reduced fares on some transport. Downside is that you lose the $3 deposit and any value on it, they could learn from Dehli, India were you get a refund for both when you cash it in. Definitely best way to travel in San Francisco , no queuing for tickets.
