    What to Expect
Mission San Luis Rey is among the largest of California's 21 Spanish missions, and it shows the significance of Spanish influence in the state's history.

Browse the museum at your own pace and see informative displays of Native American, Mexican, and Spanish artifacts. The mission is known for its sunken gardens, and archaeological and architectural features such as a wooden dome and cupola. It was once referred to as 'king of the missions.'

In the present day, the mission is both a retreat center, a home for Franciscan friars and has an active church with daily Mass at noon.

Even though this mission has had to be restored several times, the essential framework of the original mission is still there. It retains its enclosed garden and the architecture of the Spanish colonial era. It is also a working parish, and we visited while a Rosary devotion

Beautiful church and the tour was very informative. Grounds well kept. You can have a picnic there as well. Plan a day trip and head to the beach for the sunset.

In the very beginning there were rattles that my daughter (6 months) could play with. The history was interesting and artifacts they have are mesmerizing. There’s a gift shop at the end and workers were kind.
