90-minute Elephant Watching Experience in Hoedspruit

By Elephant Moments
About
Elephant Moments is a respectful and memorable early morning experience where visitors have the chance to learn invaluable insights about elephants and get the opportunity to meet a few of these gentle giants and understand them and their immense importance as a keystone species to our ecosystem. The Jabulani Herd has inspired many people around the world with their stories of rescue and survival, due to the human-elephant conflict that continues to threaten elephants as a species. They are a unique, tight-knit herd that has not only accepted one another as orphans, but continue to welcome orphaned calves that need another family to accept them unconditionally, something rarely seen in wild herds. Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development (HERD) provides a safe place for the herd to thrive in a semi-wild environment. Side by side, the Jabulani Herd browse, swim and play happily in the beautiful bush of the Kapama Reserve. Your visit will help contribute to their wellbeing.

      Adorable experience with Jabulani
We visited Camp Jabulani at the Kapama Game Reserve. We had a great interaction with Jabulani and other 2 elephants. Jabulani was my favorite, beautiful gentle elephant that lifts one of the front legs and pose for the pictures! Our host Owen was great, kind, knowledgeable and taught us a lot about Jabulani and the camp for orphan elephants. It was great to interact with the elephants, unforgettable experience!

      Awesome Experience
It was great to learn and experience these orphans up to close. The work this team does to ensure their well-being and teach others about conservation was impressive. I recommend a visit to meet these giants.

      Magnificent
This was absolutely on my bucket list, first we were staying at kapama buffalo lodge which was awesome but that’s another review but if your staying at one of the kapama lodges you get taken to this interaction via safari vehicle, once you arrive your greeted and asked to go in the gift shop and sign some paperwork and then if you want there is coffee or tea to drink, there’s large billboards to read while you wait for the interaction to start that tell the story behind the camp and it’s elephant inhabitants, the lead ranger will come out and introduce himself and go over the history and in the background they are leading the elephants in to an area with a wall, you are given buckets of very large pellets and you feed these massive animals & it’s an awesome experience, the famous elephant that is the trademark of Amarula is the first to greet you, it’s hard to describe the size and power that this intelligent animals has without seeing it first hand, you eventually work your way down to each elephant and interact with the very last, this elephant is smart and can do tricks, he blows his trunk to tell you hello and picks up the rangers stick and hands it to a guest, this is an awesome experience & well worth the money, the care that is given and the amount of love these rangers have for the elephant counterpart is very evident, also be on the lookout for warthogs, they are ever present looking for left over pellets from the elephants & I got good pictures of them, if your in the area this is something you should definitely do, it will not disappoint!

      Magic!
Jabulani has become a magic word for us - my 12 years old daughter and I were totally enchanted! To feed elephants of different sizes and characters, to be close to them, without fences or bars in an authentic African landscape, that was wonderful. Also very interesting was the information about elephants in general and other animals, which we were allowed to feed. The nice coffee table welcome and the atmosphere in front of the traditional-looking buildings for us was part of this special African experience. A more detailed report about this special experience will follow in our family world travel blog lestsshaeredreams.com.

      Incredible personal experience with elephants!
These are elephants which are somewhat comfortable around people; they are kept separate from the wild herd. They are primarily rescues from small businesses, etc., which had them and then couldn't keep them. The elephants stand behind a stone fence, one feeds them elephant "candy" supplied by the camp. (feed pellets) It's amazing to feel the muscles in the trunk, to see the mouth of an elephant, to feel the heat in its ears as opposed to the rest of its body, etc. Knowledgeable staff, very proud of their herd of elephants.

      Once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Elephants - Africa’s gentle giants. Blessed are these extraordinary people, who commit their lives to save and rescue wild animals and orphans. Interaction with the elephants was WoW, Wow, Wow! I'm not sure who loved the attention more...

      Kapama Elephant Experience
I visited this experience during my 2017 visit to South Africa and thoroughly enjoyed this very special visit. The elephants have all been orphaned during their lives and, despite the best efforts of staff, they refuse to return to the wild. Kapama have made the decision to employ people to walk with these beautiful animals each day throughout the reserve. I was privileged to be able to get up close with three elephants who allowed me to pet and feed them. They are such beautiful gentle creatures and it is so worth the time to interact with them in a non threatening environment 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

      Giants of the Bushveld
What an incredible way to spend a morning in Kapama. Being able to touch, feed and interact with these amazing behemoths was almost beyond description. We loved it!! You really can't appreciate the size and gentleness of Subakwe and Jabulani until you stand next to them and feel the power they possess. Isaac and all the handlers clearly love these giants and care for them in an amazing way. The elephants only spend less than an hour a day in contact with visitors and then are released to wander in the bush. We came over from Buffalo Camp which took about 20 minutes. They serve coffee and biscuits when you arrive and there are two small restrooms and a gift shop at the encounter area. To us this was certainly worth the time and cost. Very enjoyable!!

A bit expensive but very cool
I would absolutely suggest meeting these elephants. They are gentle giants but it’s not often you get to meet an elephant that lives in the wild

Up close and personal with gentle giants
The opportunity to go to Camp Jabulani was an extra excursion from Kapama Game Reserve. What a highlight! It was basically a whole morning trip in place of a game drive. They walked you through the history of how the camp was started, and what its mission is. They do good work. It made us very conscious of poaching that is still going on. In a supervised setting, you were allowed to pet elephants of various sizes, with plenty of photo ops. It puts a smile on my face just thinking back of our morning there.

    The most magical experience!

The team at Elephant Moments do such amazing work; I arrived a little bit earlier to find the carers taking the majority of the parade out for the morning.

These elephants are orphaned and are not used to being in the wild Kruger alone, thus depend on the work of Elephant Moments to care for them.

Meeting Sebakwe, Somapani and Jabulani was definitely the highlight being able to meet and feed all 3 before they head off for the day.

A wonderful experience, definitely worth the journey from Hoedspruit city centre (20 - 40ish mins)

Great experience with the kids, something they will always remember. Introduced to 3 elephants including Jabulani, being able to touch, feed, and learn about them up close. Wonderful memories.

Uncertain how I feel about the experience.

it was fantastic to see these gentle giants up close, be able to touch them etc.
We were told the elephants can do as they please, can leave the tourists if they wish to do so.
When our elephant wanted to leave us, he was not allowed to do so, the guards kept him there.

the guards sticks also have metal hooks on them, that bugged me.

so sadly I felt torn by the end of it.
got some great pics, loved to have had them so close, but...
it just didnt feel right, especially after seeing them do as they please in Kruger.

Best part is being close yet respectful of the elephants and getting to know them better. The afternoon tour is better than the morning one as you get to interact with them in the wild. The guides are excellent and knowledgeable.
