- traceyr6560 contributionsGreat tripThe journey to Edoras was long but was worth it. Nick was very informative. Cafe for morning tea was great and lunch was good.Written 10 March 2025
- 377khuen0 contributionsOne of my unforgettable day trips in South Island of NZThe views were amazing. Our tour guide Nick was excellent with his knowledge about the region and his cheerfulness as well as thoughtfulness. He took good care of the guests.Written 6 March 2025
- iowacityia0 contributionsMonday, February 10th, afternoon shore excursion bus tour.We were part of a bus tour shore excursion, from Princess Cruises. It went from 12:30-4pm. Picked up from the Lyttelton dock in a double decker bus. We went to the Cashmere hill lookout, for a view overlooking Christchurch. Then a tour around Christchurch, with a stop at the Mona Vale Garden Park. Quite beautiful. Then a tour through Sumner, on our way to a scenic drive back to the cruise port. My simplistic review doesn’t do this tour justice. It was a great tour. Far better than I was expecting. On the bus taking care of us in driving or guide responsibilities, were Linda, John, and Nick. Both guiding, and bus driving, were great. Thank you.Written 24 February 2025
- jshlau0 contributionsGreat views and historyI had an absolute blast on this tour with Nick. He is very knowledgeable about LotR and the Canterbury region, along with being a very considerate guide. Nick had a few props to play with (swords, axe, and Rohan flag) which made it even better. One thing to note is that the Edoras set has been demolished, so you will be visiting where the set was built. if you aren't a LotR fan and want to see some scenic views around Christchurch without having to drive, I still highly recommend this tour. There were a few stops made at different photogenic areas, and even the view from the vehicle was amazing (mountains popping up in the background, Lake Camp etc). - Copied from my review on ViatorWritten 22 February 2025
- RuthyGlasgow0 contributionsWonderful sceneryI went this trip booked with the cruise ship I was on. Wonderful scenery through to Middle Earth and to where Edoras was built on the hill for King Theoden. Amazing to think the parts of Lord of the Rings was filmed there. Beautiful scenery with clear river running through. Stunning.Written 19 February 2025
- truong dinh q0 contributionsAwesomely enjoyableVery enjoyable and exciting. In particular with Nick, our guide, a very caring person with deep knowledge on everything pertaining to the "Lord of The Rings" movies, its making, its crew and casts and Peter JacksonWritten 11 February 2025

- Tom A0 contributionsBeautiful scenery and highly informed guide.Excellent guide and beautiful trip. I'm not a LOTR fan myself but rather went just for the scenery and was not disappointed. Our guide was very knowledge and entertaining. Learnt a lot about the filming of LOTR along with the history of the area. Overall it was fantastic experience and one I'd highly recommendWritten 4 January 2025
- Paradise521353363140 contributionsHighly Recommend LOTR Journey to Edoras from ChristchurchGreat experience to see where they had the Riders of Rohan capital, Edoras… While the weather was a little wet, the Tour Guide Nick really brought the experience to life… I highly recommend it for even non-LOTR fans, as the scenery & experience of climbing Mt Sunday was specialWritten 2 January 2025
- LouiseandPeter20 contributionsWouldn't have missed it for the world!Firstly, Cheryl was an absolute dream tour guide. Funny, thorough, kind, and knowledgeable . She made a beautiful day, even better. There was some confusion about pickup times and places, but we got there in the end and had the most glorious day. LOTR fan or not, book this tour if you want sublime views, landscape, a small group experience, and a caring tour operator.Written 1 January 2025
- 989abbyd0 contributionsExcellent tourExcellent tour, highly recommend. Nicolas was an exceptional tour guide. Very engaging and informative. We had a full tour of all ages and physical abilities, and at no point did anyone not feel fully included. The tour itself was amazing, especially as big LOTR fans. Also, I really appreciate how they were able to cater for eveyone (in addition to gluten-free, we had vegan, lactose free, and nut allergies in our group, but lunch was provided for all dietary restrictions). Bonus points for a mini tour of the city on the way way. Thanks for a brilliant day!Written 23 December 2024

They were informative and funny as well. Great information and sightseeing. The Double Decker bus was great. We booked this tour because of its great ratings and were definitely not disappointed. - odellop0 contributionsIt was like being in Middle EarthThe drive in our off road vehicle was well worth the trip to Edoras! The views were amazing! A must see for all LOTR fans!!!Written 30 November 2024
- petersU7051JJ0 contributionsOne of one but too long and meandering.Edoras itself was amazing and spectacular. It is a must see. But the tour itself is a bit meandering and could really do with some shortening. It is a far drive but there’s just too much extraneous things and most people are short on time when traveling through the country.Written 27 November 2024

I went on this tour 22 Feb 2020, and had Kris as the driver on the Central tour and Steve for the Discovery tour. Both drivers were very knowledgeable and made the bus trips entertaining. Particular shout out to Steve though - there were a couple of big events happening in the city that day so I ended up being the only passenger on the Discovery tour. Steve made me feel very welcome and was a fantastic tour guide, explaining the history of the Christchurch earthquake, the rebuild process and information about different buildings and places of interest. It was a great experience!

Kia Ora and thank you for your wonderful review of our Soaring Kiwi Tour in Christchurch!
We are thrilled that you enjoyed utilising your 24hr 'hop on hop off' pass for both tour routes. We think it really is the best way to see Christchurch and visit all the places you might not normally go to.
We appreciate your comments about the live commentary from Kris and Steve. We believe that our driver/guides are 'story-tellers', it is our job to tell the story of our history, culture and people, in an authentic, personal and honest way. Our drivers take much pride in developing their commentary and they regularly update this as needed. It is wonderful to know that this 'special touch' is appreciated by our customers.
Thank you for choosing to travel with us, we really appreciate your support and hope to welcome you back again another day!
Warm regards from all our team here at Hassle-free and Soaring Kiwi Tours! :)

Like most of this type of trip it is a good way to see the layout of the city and learn about the history and recent events that happened, in particular the terrible quakes. The blue route specially addresses this issue issue with the graphic visits to the red zone where houses have been cleared leaving a graphic reminder of the event. It is sad to see the scars of the cathedral still remaining, however hopefully this will be addressed in the foreseeable future. The driver commentary, in particular from Chris, was superb with quiet, calm and immensely informative detail imparted in a highly professional manner.

I have been to Christchurch a few times over the last few years and wish I did this before. So informative and found out lots of facts on the earthquake and rebuild. Definitely recommend.

Purchased the 48hr combo ticket at the bus at stop 1 outside the Christchurch museum/botanical gardens (also recommended) - the combo ticket includes the city and discovery tours and free entry to the Quake Museum (also recommended)
We only had one full day in Christchurch - and these two tours are a great way of seeing the city and out lying areas in a day
The bus was an old London Routemaster which adds to the experience
The city centre tour took about an hour - and included a detailed commentary of the city and the main locations and effects of the 2010/11 earthquakes
The discovery tour took about 2.5hrs and included a drive past the worst hit earthquake residential areas, a visit to the south beach and a panoramic viewing platform over the city
Our drivers were helpful and informative
We highly recommend this tour

We took the bus around & stopped once to get off & walk around at Cathedral Square for an hour. Our guide & driver Maria was excellent. The tour was interesting & we liked being on the top deck as we could see more. We also did the hop on/off tram the same day & would recommend both. The bus took us to more places & gave us more information. We paid $35 each, which was thought was reasonable. The tram was a similar length & gave different information, but was a little less in depth.

My usual default in a new city is to do a hop-on, hop-off tour. And this proved to be the best idea once again. The guide was friendly and very informative, so the narrative was constant and easy to listen to. A great way to orient yourself to the city and learn so much about its key features and tis history. Highly recommended.

Excellent tour guide, extremely informative.
Disappointing to see windows of bus were not clean after all it is a sightseeing tour. If the windows are not clean this hinders sightseeing part.

I always do one of these tours when I visit a city. It’s a great orientation. I have done at least 20 over the last 10 years and this is possibly the only one I can remember where the driver does a personalised commentary. So nice to not have a recorded (and monotonous) onboarding script at every stop followed by a sometimes out of sync recording.
Well done Soaring Kiwi Tours and to Floyd the bus driver.

With the 48 combo ticket, can I do both the tours - the Central tour (red line) and the Discovery (blue line) one day and do both again the next day?
