What to expect
  • Find out what life is like as a commercial fisherman in Alaska on this Bering Sea fisherman's tour from Ketchikan. Step aboard the Aleutian Ballad, the 107-foot (33-meter) ocean-going vessel. Soak up the views from the open-air upper deck, or take a seat in the heated, enclosed amphitheater on the lower deck. Your crew ‘ties loose,’ push away from the dock and cruise through the waterways of the Inside Passage. Stay warm with a cup of provided hot chocolate, coffee, or tea, and hear about the Aleutian Ballad’s history as a commercial fishing boat, including how it became famous on season two of 'Deadliest Catch,' when the boat was struck by a 60-foot (18-meter) swell and survived to tell the tale. Ask them questions—the crew loves to share stories about life at sea! En route, keep your eyes peeled for eagles, sea lions, whales, and porpoises. Upon arrival at the fishing grounds, see firsthand how the crew bait the fishing gear with salmon and squid and toss the long-line barrel pots overboard. Then, watch in wonder as Bering Sea king crab is hauled up in 700-pound (320-kg) crab pots. Other sea creatures hauled on board include Dungeness crab, rockfish, ratfish, wolf eel, box crab, octopus, gray cod, prawn and more.

The crew sorts through the catch, and places the fish and other marine life in a tank on the deck for your observation. Feel free to snap pictures and touch some of the catch before it is released back into the sea. Set voyage back to the dock after the crew has stowed all the fishing equipment.

FREE THE OCTOPUS
Went here summer of 2019! The deadliest catch, bald eagles, and information is fun. What’s not fun? The octopus they have prisoner in a small black capsule...they also claim he “likes it” there and just feeds it some prawns each tour before locking it back into a tiny black plastic capsule!!! And the touristy gimmick of signing a plastic tag and attaching it to a crab pot with zip ties. As if the ocean didn’t have enough plastic in it 🥱 please do better for the octopus, the sea, and your tourists

Hi Sarah, thank you for expressing your concerns. We strive to be an educational and eco friendly excursion. Over the 14 years we have been operating we are constantly observing and adapting our program to conserve the sea life to the best of our ability. I’m not sure if it wasn’t explained properly but we catch octopus in our other gear, mainly the prawn pots about every two days. At that point we rotate the animals and if we don’t catch and octopus we let the other one go before it becomes distressed. At that point we will not have an octopus in the program until we catch another one at a later time. The black capsule that you are referring to is a 40 gallon barrel that creates more than enough room for the 20 pound octopus as they prefer dark small places in their natural habitat. With regards to the plastic tags, we have welcomes our guests to write a memory of a loved one they want to remember and any donations that are raised go to fishing families that have died in the industry. These funds are raised nation wide and help fill in the financial gaps. To our knowledge, we have not lost any tags at this point but we will continue to monitor. We understand that some parts of the program are not for everyone, but the tags are special for maybe guests. Thank you for your feedback and I hope that I explained our reasoning for why we have the tags and octopus the way they are. If you have any ideas that we can implant please let me know!

Great time!
Great time! Was our excursion off a cruise, and this was a lot of fun! Love deadliest catch, and you get to hear from the people who actually lived it. We were lucky to have great weather and great bald eagle activity!

Fun for all ages!
Fabulous tour! It seems a little pricey but it’s totally worth it!! Beautiful scenery and you’ll learn a lot! Tip... sit on the top floor on the sides for the best view of the show and the scenery.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I also think the top deck side seating is the best if you are able to deal with the weather. We hope to see you again!

Deadliest Catch in the flesh
Sep 2019
This excursion was excellent. Not only did I get to see how the fishing took place but I witnessed hundreds of Bald eagles up close when the boat captain circled a certain place in the waterway and then began tossing handfulls of chopped up fish overboard and we watched the birds dive-bombing feeding themselves until they ran out of fish. Wow, what a sight it was to see!!!

A GREAT tour!!!!
Sep 2019
My husband and I have taken this tour twice from our NCL cruise. It is my husband favorite excursion. The guys are very good story tellers, talking about their past experiences. What I love is all of the educational information they give in their presentations. They are also very entertaining !! Listen closely to catch their jokes and puns. Getting to see how they pull in the traps and set them again is very interesting. They stop to feed eagles and it is a thrill to see the eagles dive in for the fish they throw out. On this trip we got to experience something I have been waiting many years to see - a humpback whale was bubble feeding right in front of our boat. This is not an expected occurrence to see on this tour, but it was spectacular to see so close. They stopped the boat and let us enjoy the sight!

You've GOT to DO this
Sep 2019
This was by far my MOST favorite excursion that we did on our recent cruise. If you are a fan of Deadliest Catch this is a must. The Aleutian Ballad made news on the second season and you get to experience first hand crab fishing. You are seated in stadium seats where you can observe the deck hands as they launch and retrieve crab pots. There are heating units above you so you are never cold. There is a tank of various crab in the center and the crew tells about the crab and at a point in their talk you are invited to come down and hold a crab and have your picture taken. The crew also throws out "treats" for the seagulls and as we passed an island, they threw out bigger pieces which attracted the two eagles who live there. We got some great pictures as the eagles swooped in to get "lunch. There are restrooms on board and of course a gift shop which shows a clip of the Deadliest Catch when the Aleutian was hit by a rogue wave. While you are in the gift shop you can purchase refreshments including a box treat of King Crab Legs with melted butter to eat while you continue to listen to the story of crab fishing on the Bering Sea. Oh, if you are thinking you might get sea sick, you won't. I don't think we ever felt a rough movement of the ship~they don't take you out into rough waters.

High Quality Tour
Sep 2019
It was really cool to be on the actual boat after watching it on the TV show. Everybody on the Aleutian Ballad was extremely knowledgable and had plenty of stories to tell. The eagles were amazing, as well as the crab in the tanks! I see some reviews on here that people are disappointed in the crew for not actually pulling up KING crab which is dumb, because Ketchikan is like the tropics of Alaska and the show was filmed in the bering sea which is much much much colder, so if you're reading this, understand that it would be physically impossible to pull pots with king crab in Ketchikan. I really loved how the boat was set up in terms of the different areas holding different types of pots and interactive details, that being said I wish we were allowed to explore the boat for just a bit longer on our own.

One of the best tours in Ketchikan!

A Must do in Ketchikan
Aug 2019
This was a very good tour. I read some of the negative reviews which were not correct to some point. You get to see eagles fly, hold crabs and shrimp and hear real stories of the Captain and crew. This was a working boat which they refitted to take tourist on rides. If you are expecting a real crab boat, go get a job on one. I knew all of this going into the trip and I really enjoyed it. We will do this again. If it is not raining, you need to ride on the top deck towards what starboard (right) side of the boat.

My husband and I just returned from our Alaskan cruise. The Bering Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour was our favourite excursion of our entire cruise. We had watched the tv program, so to go on the ship was really educational and fun. The Crew were really friendly and engaging. We highly recommend this tour, it is worth every penny!
