Extreme Arenal and Cerro Chato Volcano Hike in La Fortuna

Overview

This hike in Arenal Volcano National Park will sate your appetite for adventure. Suitable for active and fit travelers, this challenging excursion reveals the volcanic landscapes of Cerro Chato, Arenal Volcano. Trekking with a guide means you won’t worry about getting lost and you’ll have a better chance of spotting monkeys and tropical birds. Plus, you’ll end with a cocktail at some hot springs.

What to Expect

After hotel pickup in La Fortuna, you’ll travel to Arenal Volcano National Park and embark on a challenging hike to Cerro Chato and Arenal Volcano. During the trek, you’ll pass lava-carved landscapes, see some of the Arenal Hanging Bridges;,and, with luck, spot native tropical birds and monkeys.

Continue to the Arenal Observatory Lodge to learn more about the park’s geology and absorb sweeping views of the national park. After watching the sunset, travel to back by car and soak aching muscles in some nearby hot springs, where you’ll enjoy a cocktail.

The tour concludes with hotel drop-off.

Great hike, even in the rainy season!

This all-day affair was a hell of an experience, and super fun even though we got absolutely soaked during the actual hike. It's a challenging hike, but our guide did a great job leading the way. You'll need to use your hands a few times,...More

It's totally closed (wink, wink, here's a map)

This isn't legal advice, but the other reviews are spot on. The trail is officially closed and you are risking a trespassing fine. On other hand, they've closed it to keep people from heading up Cerro Chato as a cover for actually going up Arenal...More

A majority of my pictures from Costa Rica are from my hike. I kept my phone in my backpack and took it out often to take photos of the view. You’re not by the river really, mostly in the jungle/forest. It did rain on my hike... More
