About
2 persons minimum. The city of Salvador itself is often referred to as the 'African Soul' of Brazil, as descendants of the first African enslaved have held tight to their African traditions, and these mingle with the colonial influences to compelling effect. The Pelourinho, a bohemian UNESCO protected district in the historic center of Salvador, is renowned for its beautiful colonial architecture, multi-colored houses and steep cobblestone streets. Pelourinho is often called a city within a city because its character is so individual and it's such a highlight of any visit to Salvador. The best way to explore the churches, cafés and music bars is on foot. Although this area was in disrepair until the 90s, it has had substantial investment in restoration and security and is now a charming and safe place for tourists.

- 75nataliad0 contributionsOff the beaten path magic for the adventurous travelerIn the center of a city with clusters of high rises, is a lovely colonial center dating back to the 16th Century with the largest number of gold leaf baroque churches in Brazil. It is also a center of African culture, with music played everywhere Nearby is the oldest fortress and lighthouse of the Americas and not too far away are wonderful sandy beaches on the edges of an Atlantic rain forest.Written 7 March 2024

- irisbO6552PY0 contributionsAmazing TripI just loved my stay! Of course Bahia represents for me what is most interesting in Brazil, for its music, its architecture, its history, its people... but the agents of Bahia Metisse have done a lot there... Mainly Lola, a young woman almost native to Boipeba -a small island with crystal clear waters- she made access to this heavenly place, its culture and its habitants very naturally! I was able to meet incredible people there, on a human and culinary level, not to mention the landscape : 0 all orchestrated to perfection, and I am not someone who usually has his trip organized! So I had to continue and left for the incredible Chapada Diamantina, a national park with visuals like you can imagine in Brazil, huge rock formations and dense forests...with a guide like Indiana Jones, a Bahian botanist, with whom I was able to have long conversations thanks to Lola, because she is perfectly bilingual and has a patience and generosity of soul that defies all competition. Thank you again for this very finely organized stay! For your carinho Lola and all her friends who participated in this unforgettable moment.Written 25 November 2022
- domandGae0 contributionsDream come true!Busy life and short vacation ; for a long time we wanted to spend a couple of weeks in Brazil. But how to avoid a middle of the road kind of trip when you haven’t forecast any thing ? We asked Bahia Metisse and Lola overwhelmed our expectations with a Taylor made trip that brought us (with a chauffeur !) from the Chapada Diamantina on the the tracks of last century diamond diggers to heavenly beaches of Boipeda. We’ve been welcomed for two weeks by mother nature, resting in wonderfull and cosy pousadas, meeting brazilian people smile and humanity, plus Lola’s enjoyment.Written 27 April 2022
- erozemd0 contributionsGreat day tour of SalvadorWe had a fantastic day tour of Salvador provided by Joel. Joel was a terrific guide, he was very passionate, knowledgeable, and funny. He was also a great driver. He showed us all the essentials of Salvador in one day and really explained the history very well. We had a great lunch at a local restaurant he recommended. Overall we were very happy with our day tour and would highly recommend a tour with Joel when visiting Salvador.Written 28 February 2020
- PDJ0 contributionsSuperb day out in Salvador. Our guide Marcos Wilson was very informative, extremely knowledgable and a very nice person. We were bowled over by interesting facts that Marcos gave us in each area of our trip. He paid great attention to detail with regard to our pretences & where we would like to eat. Thank you Marcos for introducing us to your lovely city & giving us one of the most interesting guided tours experienced in our many travels.Written 22 January 2020
- Heather N0 contributionsGreat cooking class and opportunity to learn more about the cultureWe did the cooking class with Nicolas. It is so much more than just a cooking class, you get immerse yourself in the local community through visiting the local market as well as cooking in a fisherman's house. Nicolas is a great guide and knows lots about Salvador and Brazil more generally. He is clearly very well respected by the locals and we appreciated being able to "go deeper" into the local culture than most other tours allow.Written 3 January 2020

- mudra10 contributionsGreat Day Tour of Salvadore de BahiaThis full day tour (7-8 hours) is a combination of historic and panoramic tours... We organized a small (10 people) group from our cruise ship during our port visit in March this year. The day tour was expertly co-ordinated by Bahia Metisse and expertly run by our tour guide Nicholas. We spent first couple of hours exploring the Pelourinho, by foot, directly from the port and then boarded our van-car to see the rest of the city... including Itapagipe peninsula (lower city): Ribeira area, the famous Bonfim church and its brazilian ribbons, the Monte Serrat fort and Boa viagem offering a magnificent view on Salvador. We also passed by the Barra lighthouse and the Tororo lake with its huge sculptures of the Orixas.... (spirits of the afro Brazilian religion, the Candomblé). We had a nice lunch in small typical restaurant with local food. The final stop was a visit the fantastic Sao Joaquim market. Well recommended by all in our group and reasonably priced.Written 16 May 2019
- rdesaidc0 contributionsAmazing tour of Salvador over two daysJoao Luis was our guide and gave us the walking tour of Pelourinho the first day and the Popular and Panoramic driving tour of the city the second day. What can I say? JL’s knowledge of history is incredible, and he was able to show us things we would never have noticed. Enjoyed greatly the visits to the Se (Cathedral) and incredible Church of St. Francis. Stopped to greet various friends of JL on the way including a very talented artist. The second day was even more fun, getting to know the city and included visits to a tile artist, trying unfamiliar flavors at the famous Sorveteria de Ribeira, making wishes at the church of Bomfim, visiting the San Joaquim market, driving through the coastal neighborhoods and finally the highlight of the day - savoring the delicious acaraje of Cira in Rio Vermelho! Thanks to you, Joao Luis, Salvador will always be in our heart and merci, Nicolas, for making all of this possible!Written 26 February 2019
- benduce0 contributionsFantastic day in BahiaWe were on a cruise and the guide was right at the exit of the port at the time we agreed... Tour well organized, and adapted for our preferences. - Akey840 contributionsDisappointingWe wanted to do a tour to Praia de Forte and went with Bahia Metisse given the excellent reviews on TripAdvisor. We dropped in to the office and they got us on to a fairly cheapish bus trip at fairly late notice. The French person in the office was friendly and helpful, so far so good. However, the trip itself was actually very disappointing. First of all, we were told we would be picked up from a nearby hotel. We waited at least 30 mins past the pick up time before contacting the office. Apparently they had forgotten! Anyway about an hour later someone arrived in a car, we weren't sure if he was taking us to the bus or all the way to the beach. After a 20 min ride through Salvador we stopped at another hotel, where 4 other people seemed to be waiting for our car as well, but obviously there was not enough room for everyone. Anyway, 20 mins later and after a number of phone calls from our driver we're on our way again. It still wasn't clear to us what was going on at this stage, and after a further 30 mins or so we pull into a petrol station! We're then told to transfer to another car - which was totally unmarked! By this stage we are getting quite annoyed and anxious. Our next driver did nothing to quell these feelings, it really seemed like he was some random Brazilian guy. It was difficult to communicate with him as he spoke no English and although he was friendly enough in the end, as I said it was not ideal. Anyway, after an hour or so we arrived at the first beach and met up with what was supposed to be our bus trip. Although we booked with Bahia they obviously pair up with other tours, and the company running the tour were another firm (I can't remember exactly who), but remember that the review on TripAdvisor are pretty average. So be careful to ask about this. The beach was nice, but to be honest it was all a bit package tour, although can't really complain about this as was sold that way. After lunch, we moved on to Praia del Forte and the turtle sanctuary. Annoyingly we then had to pay extra to get in the turtle sanctuary, we had asked about this the day before and were not told it would be extra. The sanctuary itself was pretty soulless as well, I wouldn't particularly recommend it. Once done at the sanctuary we had about 45 mins - 1 hr for the rest of Praia del Forte. It wasn't enough time to see it properly, it seemed nice enough but reminded us of centre parcs in the sun. Overall a disappointing trip.Written 30 March 2018
