About
Explore the famous Nishiki Market visiting generations-old food stalls and then enjoy a traditional course lunch. At a few of the stops we will sample specialty products like tsukemono (vegetables from the surrounding mountains preserved in vinegar), yuuba (the world’s smoothest sashimi tofu made from the world-famous Kyoto mountain water), Kamaboko (seafood preserved in fish paste), Tako (Octopus with quail egg) and Macha Warabi Mochi (a special traditional sweet covered in ground tea leaves). During the tour, you will learn detailed information about the ingredients of different Japanese dishes, how their food is prepared and what is used to eat it. You won't just taste Kyoto’s delicious food but will also have a sense of the history and atmosphere of the Nishiki Market experienced by the Japanese for generations. After your market exploration, you will walk to a nearby restaurant and have a course lunch featuring beautiful and delicious local dishes.

A great way to take things in
Jul 2019 • Friends
Sets the surrounding stage well culturally and historically. We were able to eat food that varied a lot from one another. Having guidance was great. As far as orienting ourselves with culture in Kyoto this was a great way to start. Timing was perfect-the market gets much more crowded late on in the day. Our guides were great.

Fabulous way to learn so much
We find these tours a fantastic way to orient ourselves with the unique aspects of the culture, area and food. This was a great tour. We learned quite a bit, tasted many samples - virtually anything we saw along the tour that we wanted to try. The market is fabulous. It was a true farmers market for centuries and remains a place the restaurant chefs come for special foods. But so much more! Not a tourist trap, it was lively and clearly a place for town residents.

Now the lunch. It was fabulous. Seven courses may sound daunting but it is done in the small bento-box size so not at all overwhelming. I am a tiny eater and this was not too much to comfortably handle. The foods, style and service was very much that if the Kyoto region. The tour guide explained and answered many questions.

The tour guide. Abiyan was wonderful. Handled our little group gracefully and was most informative. The tour company clearly is very good and finding guides that will work well with guests.

Great tour of Nishiki Market!
May 2019 • Couples
This was our second tour with Arigato Food tours and so worth it. Nishiki Market is a huge street market in Kyoto. There are at least 100 vendors! We wanted to explore the food side of Kyoto and so glad we did! Our guide, Yoshiko Tanimoto, was from Kyoto and so knowledgable. If you can get booked with her I would recommend highly. She had me try things I would have NEVER tried. So worth the adventure it was because they were delicious! Like Yoshiko advised, "Close your eyes and bite!" You will not be sorry!

Very nice way to experience a market
Apr 2019 • Friends
In Tokyo a few days ago we wandered around the fish market on our own - it was certainly fun and we tried a lot of things. Doing the guided tour in Kyoto was a whole different experience. Fun in a different way. It was nice to be able to actually ask questions, get some thoughts back, get suggestions about local specialties, etc. Our tour guide had spent a couple weeks in the US a while ago and had great English skills. Our group had a great time. And the full lunch to conclude it all was fantastic!

Excellent tour, very good guide, terrific lunch
Apr 2019 • Couples
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour. OK, we could have wandered through Nishiki Market on our own and sampled things (we're very independent travellers), but having a knowledgable local guide (Yoshiko) was undoubtedly a benefit and made it a fun event. The lunch was excellent, better than we expected! Very good food in a nice setting. Thank you Yoshiko!

YAY! So glad you enjoyed and thank you so much for the kind review. We will pass your praise on to our guide! I agree it is easy to go to a market on your own, But I always find it is so much more interesting to have a local resident explain what you are seeing and trying. I also personally love that lunch place so we are thrilled you liked it too.

Awesome tour with Rinrin
Mar 2019 • Couples
Ian and I did this tour on Wednesday. Rinrin was our guide and as we were the only participants on this tour we felt very special. Rinrin is so lovely and has a wonderful knowledge of Kyoto, the markets and local traditions. She was able to answer our many questions and I now have such a better understanding of Japanese culture. It was great to have the opportunity to taste foods we were unfamiliar with. We felt so comfortable with Rinrin, it was like being with family. Thank you again to Rinrin and to Arigato Tours.

Great experience for both locals & tourists
Nov 2018 • Solo
Though I've staying in Kyoto for couple of months, I found this gastronomical tour really refreshing and educational! Personally I would highly recommend it to tourists who loves food and would like to learn more about Kyoto's culture without any language barrier.
Despite the morning hiccup, it was quickly fixed with the team sending an email to notify us, would be great if it's via call (on WhatsApp/ LINE) instead though.

So happy you enjoyed the tour! Sorry for the little glitch in the start time we are thrilled that it did not cause too much trouble for you. Nishiki is really wonderful and though people often go with out a guide we feel a local can really share so much more info about the history and ingredients in the market. Glad you enjoyed and thank you for your kind review!
