Overview

Kyoto is Japan’s cultural capital, an elegant, history-filled city packed with hidden attractions and a lively street culture. During this intimate walking tour, you’ll get an insider’s peek at the famed historic neighborhoods as the lantern-lit streets spring to life in the evening. Sample one-of-a-kind local snacks, from frozen banana to skewered squid. And because this is a small-group tour, you’ll have plenty of time to ask questions.

What to Expect

A favorite of poets and philosophers for centuries, the well-preserved old quarters of Kyoto contain some of the world’s most atmospheric streets—and they truly come alive at night. During this neighborhood and food crawl, follow a guide through Kyoto’s backstreets, where lantern light flickers alongside neon signs and ancient traditions coexist with cutting-edge nightlife.

In Gion, listen carefully for the click of wooden okobo heels as kimonoed geishas flutter between appointments. From there, you’ll head to the bright, noisy nightlife district of Yasaka, famous for its delectable street snacks.

Bypass the tourist traps and head to under-the-radar attractions across the river in Teramachi. Your guide will be on-hand to fill you in on the history and culture of each sight as you explore enchanting areas of Kyoto usually only glimpsed by locals. Round off your visit with a stop at a typical food and drink shop for some local delicacies.
