Overview

This Gion walking tour is the ultimate way to immerse yourself in Kyoto’s geisha culture. Save time researching what Japanese words mean, as you’ll have a guide to explain the difference between maiko, geiko, and many other terms. You’ll learn about the history of Japan’s old capital, and important traditions. A fascinating way to tour Kyoto’s Gion district, with insider knowledge from an English-speaking guide.

What to Expect

Your walking tour of Japan’s old capital begins by meeting at the Gion Omoide Museum. You’ll explore Gion, which is famous for being the Geisha district of Kyoto. During the tour, your guide will point out areas that were featured in the book and movie Memoirs of a Geisha.

As you walk down cobbled streets and past a beautiful stream, you’ll hear stories of Kyoto’s ancient past. Your guide will educate you on the history of geisha—from their kimono to hairstyles, to rules, and daily rituals. If you’re lucky—you may even spot a geisha on the street.

If you’d like to enhance your tour, you can choose for it to be a private tour (additional costs). This tour option is extended by two hours and you’ll see three Geisha areas in total—Gion, Ponto-cho, and Miyagawa-cho. Your tour ends in front of the Gion corner.

Elly's tour was very informative. We walked by lots of interesting and historical places. Elly did a great job at telling us about the history of Japan. We got pretty lucky and spotted a few Maikos walking around. Would definitely recommend this tour!
