- 1Tired of basic ramen and sushi? For a bit of adventure, stir things up during this “rare” food tour in Sendai. Jump into the deep end of Japanese cuisine, tasting the local Sendai delicacies, like raw beef, raw chicken, raw horse, and maybe even raw shark heart!* With an English-speaking food tour guide, you will visit 3 specialty izakaya (bars) to try the unique raw foods of Sendai. Gorgeous Sendai boasts the best of the city and country, with all the conveniences of modern cities plus all of the natural abundance of the countryside. The ingredients here are extra fresh, safe to eat raw, and just as delicious as they are rare! At each izakaya, you will try 1 dish and 1 beverage, such as local sake, whisky, beer, or nonalcoholic beverages. You will meet your tour guide outside Kotora, a restaurant specializing in wagyu beef, where you will taste the first 4 dishes on the menu below. Then, you’ll take a stroll through the retro alleyways of Sendai’s Bunka Yokocho and Iroha Yokocho, glowing with orange lanterns. Next, you’ll stop at a local haunt, Ni-dai-me, an izakaya that serves up raw chicken and horse meat. You’ll finish up at Nanbu-Iroha, a traditional izakaya that is run by a friendly Okami-san. Along with a glorious selection of Japanese sake, they specialize in northern Miyagi and Iwate cuisine. But the pinnacle of the evening is tasting rare shark heart (“mouka no hoshi”)! *Please be aware that shark heart is not guaranteed, and can only be served if the shark has been caught fresh that day. As Miyagi Prefecture abides by sustainable fishing methods, sharks are not targeted for particular parts, and to ensure that there is no waste, the entire shark is used. As a substitution for the shark heart, “Harmonica” (broiled swordfish backbone) may be served. Menu: -Salted beef gizzard -Marbled raw beef sashimi -Marbled raw beef sushi -Sample “Yukehoe” set with minced raw beef and uni -Raw chicken -Raw horse -Raw shark heart* OR broiled swordfish backbone
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- wendyrB1357UP0 contributionsDo not book your dinner reservations with ByFood!Perhaps the tours are good, I don’t know. I do know that the restaurant reservations are hugely overpriced and the restaurants have not been vetted. How else would we pay 10x menu price for terrible food in a dirty awful place? Do not recommend.Written 1 October 2024
- Escape356785244430 contributionsBest Ramen NoodlesI love to cook and one of the things I wanted to do while in Kyoto was to take a ramen noodle making class. This class with Yaya and Patti was so much fun. They were both very friendly, energetic and wonderful to work with. They even took lots of videos and photos for me to show my family and friends. This was one of my memorable experience in Kyoto, and I will always remember Yaya and Patti for sharing the noodle making experience. After class, I ate a very delicious bowl of ramen, the Gion black ramen, and the umesyu was a very nice drink to go with my ramen. Mahalo from Hawai’i.Written 20 September 2024
- Halfcalf180 contributionsByFood: Not a Good Value? We booked a reservation in Shinjuku through ByFood. Process was straightforward. We paid $236 for a truly disappointing meal at Rakkakutei. Had we gone to the restaurant directly, the price would have been less than half. The meal, which was a selection of skewers and other dishes, was basically a bar menu, not the experience advertised. Perhaps ByFood provides some excellent food tours and culinary experiences in Japan. However, we found our experience to be forgettable. As a result, we canceled our food tour in Kyoto.Written 17 September 2024
- j0hns0n160 contributionsGreat noodle making experienceThis was an interesting activity to see how noodles are made for a restaurant. The ramen meal at the end was delicious. And the staff were very friendly and energetic to involve us at all the stages. As an extra/bonus, it would have been nice to see how the ramen dish was made with our noodles.Written 11 September 2024
- daradew0 contributionsMust do in Kyoto! We loved this experience in Kyoto and learning more about the process of making ramen noodles. The owner himself and his colleague Yaya were outstanding! The experience is an hour long and ending with a bowl of delicious ramen in their restaurant. We loved learning more about this cuisine and the heart and love that goes into making it. This is the perfect cultural experience to have while in Kyoto!Written 4 September 2024
- konas1800 contributionsThis Cultural cooking class is the best one!Wow! On this 3 week journey of Japan, this has been the best thing! Chef Katsuji and his wonderful wife Mayumi are a perfect example of Japan and it's culture. This class was more than cooking, and that in itself was awesome, these beautiful people opened their home to share their skills and culture and made you feel very welcome. Thank you Chef and Mayumi we will never forget your generous hospitality. I will forever recommend this class as long as it is available.Written 26 August 2024
- N9645ARpeters0 contributionsGo and see Harajuku this way and get a very good experience and knowledge of TokyoI was lucky enough to take part in this evening tour with the guide Eugene and we walked around the neighborhood and I got a lot of experiences and Eugene was extremely organized and told a lot about buildings, streets and of course about food and sweets. I can highly recommend this tour in Harajuku with ByFood. Best regards Peter / Denmark :)Written 5 December 2023
- FoxyRhino0 contributionsMidnight Diners Tokyo ExperienceTook this tour with Alex and had an amazing time. As a single traveller on my own, I'd have never got to visit the small bars he took us. Would definitely recommend this as a great time that only finished when I had to catch the last trainWritten 28 January 2023
- Kathy S0 contributionsgreat way to spend an afternoon--making mochiI have always wanted to see how different types of mochi were made. The class with Miyuki was great. Four of us all working on our 'masterpieces'. So much fun and I LOVE mochi, so it was a fun session. Highly recommend it. Miyuki was a lovely teacher and hostess.Written 13 October 2018
- Ryan S0 contributionsGreat people and great foodThe class was very well thought out. We were hands on for a good amount of time. The end result was a plate of dumplings and a bowl of ramen. It was quite good all around.Written 8 October 2018
- zmau19620 contributionsA good tour with a good guide. The tour was well organized, and the guide was extremely nice tolerant and interesting. There is a small problem that the fish market itself is not available when the interesting activity takes place, but this is not their responsibility.Written 21 August 2018
- keyheartlion0 contributionsDelicious, insightful and fun!Had a wonderful evening with Masahito and his wife, learning about the surprisingly complicated process of making ramen while having a wonderful time! TheWritten 7 July 2018
- jayunch0 contributionsFun and Tasty!Had a super great time on the the Shibuya Food Tour, and I can guarantee that all the foods chosen were delicious (and very unique)! I was so full by the end, but it was worth it for how great everything was. The tour guide was also very knowledgeable and friendly, so all the information and history surrounding the foods themselves were interesting and easy to understand. Excellent English as well -- for those who can't use Japanese. I would definitely recommend this tour!Written 2 July 2018
- Marvy S0 contributionsExcellent experienceAmazing experience! I recommend you if you want to learn the best wasabi and Mochi classes in Japan.Written 18 May 2018
- Dianna R0 contributionsFun and engaging cooking classes!Tokyo by Food offers some incredible classes! I took the ramen and gyoza class, as well as the wagashi one. Both were very unique experiences, one being taught in a cooking studio and the other from the chef's own home! I had lots of fun getting to learn all about authentic Japanese cooking techniques, and would definitely recommend checking out what's being offered on Tokyo by Food while you're in Japan! You're sure to find something that you'll enjoy and learn a lot from!Written 13 May 2018
