          A disappointing day...
I wish I'd been a bit more thorough with my research before booking this tour, which turned out to be a real disappointment and probably the low-point of our three weeks in SE Asia. Communication with Peter, at the time of booking and prior to the pick-up day was good, and our guide arrived on time to collect us. We then picked up another couple with a 5yr old daughter, and began the road trip element of our tour. Our guide spoke to us for about an hour, giving us some of his views of the political climate in Cambodia at the moment and the inequities of the health and education system. He, himself, had clearly had a very difficult and challenging life, and seemed a bit resentful to be still having to work as a guide (and also a tuk-tuk driver) at the age of 73. It felt a bit uncomfortable, as did his repeated use of the 'f' word, which was probably not understood by the little (German) girl in our group, but all the same, it was inappropriate. After his initial monologue, and a roadside stop for five minutes to learn how sticky rice was made, he remained mostly quiet for the rest of the 5-hour road trip, except to answer questions, when asked. We stopped for a break, bought our own coffees and snacks and then continued on to a second stop, so that the tour guide and driver could have their lunch. This left us tourists wandering around an open market which was selling dried fruits and nuts and we were besieged by children, begging for money, refusing access to the public toilets, unless we paid. There was nowhere for us to sit, since the cafe area was only to be used if you were planning to eat, and we had been told we were 20 minutes away from lunch on the boat. After this stop, we arrived at the boat, disembarked from the van and our guide and the driver then announced that they were returning to Siem reap and wouldn't be coming further with us. (which begs the question why they couldn't wait to eat by themselves, just a bit longer). We were a group of 4 and a half people and the boat we were put on had a capacity for 120 people! Lunch was served within half an hour of embarking on the river cruise and it was good, with chicken and vegetable kebabs, pork ribs, salad and fresh fruit. The rest of the river cruise was relaxing, but consisted of only one stop at a Buddhist temple, but there were no other stops at floating villages, artisan silversmiths or anything, and we arrived after 2 hours on the river in Phnom Penh, where a tuk tuk was arranged to take us to our hotel. For the ticket price, we all felt like we'd been ripped off, and in hindsight, I should've looked at the very wide range of reviews of Tara Boats. Our tour guide on the boat was lamenting the fall in numbers of tourists doing their tours, since Covid...I'm not sure how much Covid has to do with declining numbers. We did other tours in SE Asia with burgeoning numbers. Unless this company addresses what I now realise are a number of repeating complaints, and review the description of the tours to make them more accurate, I can't see how it will recover its numbers...or, better still, improve the tour so that it's actually a reflection of what's promised and genuine value for money! I don't like to be negative, but we paid $139pp for this tour. On a subsequent day, we paid $33pp for an 8hour day tour of the Meekong Delta with a different company, which included 4hours on the road, but the rest of the day was on boats, visiting a number of different islands, including lunch, informative talks and even some entertainment! So I'm afraid that the Taraboats tour did not represent value for money at all.

          Excellent tours
We did the transfer from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh and also the floating village at sunset tour. In both instances, they were on time, efficient and friendly, providing knowledge as we went. The food was delicious. We couldn’t have asked for better tours. The one way transfer from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh was a definite highlight seeing the countryside compared to waiting at the airport and getting on a plane. Thank you also to Peter who promptly replied to my bookings and queries. Highly recommended.

Views were great, it was good weather for the excursion. Friday was very patient and explained everything to us, including some personal experiences of his, which made our trip special.

Excellent tour. Tino our guide was very good. Only 4 on our lunchtime trip but we'll worth it. Siem Reap is not just the temples - if you have 4 hours this is a must.

          Floating village Chong Kneas
We had a 3 hours boat trip to floating village Ching Kneas in Tong Le Sap area arranged by Tara Boat Tour. There are lotus farm, village people, crocodile farm along the road. The most impressing part was to met up with kids in the village. Would recommend to bring some candies / tidbits with you to send to the children. They are quite shy and smiley. Tour guide is Poss Poun( Mr Friday) who is also a teacher in the school, a sincere and kind hearted big boy. I would recommend this trip if you do not have the whole day for it. Do meet the village people, you won’t regret.

A long car transfer with a river cruise in Phnom Penh.
Description of the tour is not correct. We booked the one way SR to PP option & spent 4.5hrs in a car from SR to the outskirts of PP. Then we were put on the boat for a couple hour river cruise with lunch & 1 stop to visit a Buddhist temple. We did not 'glide around Tonal Sap Lake' but we did spend hours on a 'long & bumpy road'. Paid AU$550 for 2 people for a tour that ended up being predominantly a car drive. Lovely staff on the boat, but definitely not worth the money & it was not as described.

The village was good however when the driver showed up in a ramork and the guide said that we only had your bookings should not have gone. Two hours there and two hours back most of it on rough dirt tracks my back was shot I am in pain I don’t want to go out for the rest of the day or evening. I had a massage that has helped some Not the fault of the guide. I won’t book another trip with these, I was told they were the best, I cannot give no stars. And the Ramiork had little to no suspensions paid for a car or van get a motorcycle with trailer

A glimpse of life on the lake
Our booking turned into a private tour for two when no one else booked, so it all aboard a tuk tuk with our guide, Tinh, for the trip out to Tonle Sap. Along the way, we stopped at a lotus farm, visited a local market and saw how local women were harvesting water hyacinth stems to weave into beautiful bags and baskets. Chugging through the floating villages and seeing how the lake sustains the villagers was fascinating The final highlight was our lunch stop. The beautiful 1929 ship Queen Tara, which we had all to ourselves while we enjoyed a basic but delicious meal. A great day out!

SCAM SCAM SCAM - Read this
We learned about this company in the Lonely Planet book, and read the philantropic story about the tara boats on their website. Very nice story about restructuring sunk boats to organize visits based on fair rates. Actually this company is 100 % scam. We booked a tour for 5 persons. 26$ each. We took a boat to a main shop-boat very turistic and had a drink on another boat. The actual tour was 2x15 min. On our way back, we realized that the guide simply paid a ticket in the harbour for a boat for 5 people for 28$ that we could have bought ourselves. See fares displayed in the picture. We would have probably seen much more with this option. Conclusion: we were robbed by paying 5x the price! If you want to visit the floating village, just come to the harbour and buy you ticket there.

          Human Zoo
Very expensive Sunset Tour, no explanation about the population living in the Floating village, when you try to ask the guide about the politics isssuesbof the people he avoid answering. Tara boat tour promote itself as a sustainable agency and giving help to the people over there but you have no clue of how they help them, no contact with local, at the end you feel like you are in a human zoo. It is a pity because it’s a missed opportunity to give a voice and help this people.

Awesome trip on the Tonle Sap, Siem Reap to Phnom Penh
We took the Siem Reap to Phnom Penh trip wit 2 couples, Pete was awesome dealing with a couple of changes on our part. The driver picked us up on time and drove us 4.5 hrs to the boat. Very informative info along the way. Then we got on the boat, it was just us 4 and the crew, The food and drinks came out as we left, then 4+hrs up river on the Tonle sap river. What a amazing trip, so much to see along the way and stopping at Monestry was cool. Sameth our boat guide and the Captian were awesome, Sameth was very informative and great to just hear some of his life stories. We got dropped off and had arranged Tuk tuk to our Hotel. Even took our luggage, No issues at all, From our driver to the boat crew. Was worth the trip

          Great cultural tour
Would highly recommend this tour if you’re interested in learning about Cambodian culture and countrylife. The tour shows you first hand how important the river and Tonle Sap Lake is to the villagers livelihood. Our guide, Vanna, was funny and very knowledgeable, he made the trip an enjoyable experience!

Safety certainly is not in the operator consideration. The “jetty” if I may call it is on un level dried up mud track follow by a plank go for 1 person to walk on at any one time. Getting off the boat to the floating restaurant can be challenging if you do not have long legs to reach the steps. When returning from boat after sunset, the foot path is dark which adds more challenges to the walk back to the bus.

Similar experience in Phnom Penh sunset river cruise.

Sorry this is not our tour, not sure what tour you did but certainly not with tara boats, we use steel docking platforms owned by the port authority (Government) both in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, so i am at a loss to understand this review, i have contacted TA to advise of this.

This cruise was not as advertised. Pick up from hotel was fine. We travelled by mini bus to floating villages where we viewed them from land. We then continued on to the Port where the guide fave us a good explanation of the lake and its ecosystems. We hopped on a small boat and passed by more floating villages before arriving at the Tara River boat. This is where the tour took a turn for the worse. The only way I can describe it is that the boat was marooned in amongst mangroves and not out on the lake as expected. The sun had already set by the time we arrived, so we were told about the buffet (which was OK but all the food had gone cold), and sat down to have dinner amongst the mangroves. I don't know why the boat wasn't out on the lake, because as you can see from one of my photos, there were other large vessels on the lake enjoying great views. I would give this tour an average rating at best.

Hi Maree, Thank you for your comments about our sunset dinner and floating villages cruise tour last night, i have spoken to the Captain and our guide and also our cooking staff from the Tara Boat, the girls in the kitchen informed me that the food was taken to the main deck at approx 5pm and was fresh from the kitchen,(hot) and placed in our bain marie as we normally do, these help keep the foods warmer for longer, they did explain that it was windy last night so the food maybe a little less warm than normally would be, so we apologize for this, the Captain also informed me that high winds where expected so he moved the boat in closer to the river entry from the lake, (the high winds we been getting are from a typhoon recently crossing over Vietnam) again we are sorry but we always put safety above every other thing, the sunset was according to goggle last night in Siem Reap at 5.37pm and the guide and all smaller boats where on the tara boat by 5pm, i think the sunset view last night may have been affected by the cloudy skies, again we are sorry for your experience and we will do everything we can to improve our service, kind regards Miss Sreymom.

My husband and I had a great evening on our Sunset Dinner and Drinks cruise! Our tour guide Leng Vanna was great! He picked us up at our hotel and took us to a lotus farm and crocodile farm before making our way to see the floating villages and to our sunset cruise. Even though the clouds moved in and we could not see the sunset the setting and staff were great! I highly recommend this sunset cruise with dinner, free flow drinks and tour of the floating villages!

Fantastic tour. You get taken by mini van from your hotel to the dock, then by small boat to see a floating village and stop to see crocodiles, then continue out to the moored river boat to have dinner and watch the sunset. Astonishingly we were the only people on the boat and we were surprised they still ran the tour . Everyone was attentive and it was great, food was good and very well priced.

What a wonderful experience. Lovely to do something different. The tour guide was so helpful, friendly and informative. Seeing yo our every need. Stopping on the way there for us to see a lotus farm and at a village on stilts on the edge of the river, also at a crocodile farm. He pointed out many points of interest etc along the way, helping us to get a better understanding of the culture and way if life. Tasty food and even cocktails provided. Lovely view of the lake at sunset with plenty of time to enjoy it. Highly recommend!

Vanna was a fantastic guide ! He explained so much about the people who lived along the river, the floating village and some of his own life in Cambodia. His English is good. The food was average, drinks were good. I did feel a little sad to see the poor condition of homes the people live in but as Vanna said, they are used to it. Overall we had a very informative evening and I would certainly recommend this experience.

The dinner and drinks were great. The information provided by our guide Pon was very interesting and gave us an insight into the lives of the floating village fishing communities and those working the land. Global warming is certainly a significant factor in their changing world. What a sensational sunset.

Thank you very much for your kind comments and review, i will pass this on to our guide Pon. yes the floating villages are very interesting, the folks are so hard working but yes the fish stocks are going down every year due to a few reasons and the Globing warming is also having quite a large effect of the villages lives, however its sustainable tourism is a clear way for the folks to earn so much needed dollars ,thanks again and safe travels always

This tour is not worth it for the price. Other than the natural sunset on Tonle Sap, there is nothing to talk about. The boat is old, dimly lit, without safety measures on board and the buffet was low class. Unless you’re going for the unlimited cocktails, it is not worth it.

thank you for your feedback, on the price with the cost fuel, foods and fair wages we like most places are having to keep the costs down,i think its a great buffet dinner, as now speaking from my Chef corner, mostly we get great reviews on the quality and selection of the foods, but also recently we did slightly change the menu as now less fried foods and more grilled and Vegetarian options, we also are constantly looking for the right combination on the buffet, we have also increased the fruits to more variety. yes thanks for your mention of unlimited cocktails, all drinks ere free including wines from Australia, and draft beers and spirits ect, yes dimly lit,( most people like this feature can see stars and enjoy lake without light pollution) year she is almost 100 years old,but she is a strong old girl, made from strong steel and recently has a ferrous-cement double hulled so she will be at her best of another 100 years, all safety equipment is on board, we are only 2 boat companies that are fully insured here ,so safety is our main focus cheer

Good service & hospitality from our tour leader Pon.Pick up was on time and we had some fun & laughter with our group of 10.Along the way to Tonle Sap Lake we stopby a lotus farm, crocodile farm and a floating village. Its interesting to see a whole village floating in the middle of the lake with convenience store, restaurant, etc. The sunset dinner on board the Queen Tara was a good experience.Buffet dinner & free flow of beers/sodas/cocktails.Overall a pleasant trip.

It was a nice evening that surpassed our expectations. A pickup was organised from our hotel promptly even though we booked the tour just that afternoon. They showed up on time at 3.30pm. Mr Wa introduced himself, well spoken and happy to answer questions. We went into a smaller boat that took us through the floating village. It is a nice experience, clean and breezy. We headed onto the Queen Tara, the cruiser that is marvel herself, built in 1927. She is retiring gracefully. Food is great. Good vegetarian fare was lovely to meet other travellers and mingle.
