What to Expect
Meet your guide at your Kiev hotel or railway station and travel by private air-conditioned minivan to Chernobyl. En route, hear about the April 26, 1986, Chernobyl accident, which devastated the area. In the 18.6-mile (30-kilometer) zone, pass the derelict villages of Zalissja and Kopachi (deliberately buried to reduce contamination). Stop at the decontaminated Red Forest and Pripyat to see its decaying buildings and amusement park. View reactor 4, encased in a concrete sarcophagus, and check out the Soviet-era Duga-1 over-the-horizon radar system. In Chernobyl town, see the monument to Chernobyl’s firefighters. View the fire station and abandoned decontamination vehicles. Your tour ends at the original departure point. This was a day very well spent. The guide was knowledgable and friendly, she managed to keep us away from other tour groups, and there was a diversity of information and sites. Very well done.

We got back at about 8pm dropped off at the railway station. You will get within 50m of the reactor. However the reactor is the least intersesting part of the tour. The towns and cities are so amazing.

I’ve never seen this as an option, but would love to know if you do manage to find a tour that covers this.
