About
The Kukeri custom has appeared on Bulgarian lands more than 6000 years ago. It symbolizes the rebirth of nature from long months of darkness and cold. The Thracian people who used to inhabit these lands celebrated the end of winter and beginning of spring in the days of celebrations dedicated to the god of wine and joyfulness - Dionysus. His followers were called - Satyrs or Sileni and they were the archetypes of the Bulgarian Kukeri. The Kukeri are wearing attractive and unique self-made costumes and hand made masks. The festival begins with a parade. After that, there is a long Horo(dance) which is being guarded by the Kukeri. Young girls and men are dancing hard wearing traditional Bulgarian dresses. Come and meet the living mystical bearers of the Bulgarian traditions called “Survakari” and “Kukeri”! Experience the magic of their mask games and witness a centuries-old tradition!

Nice scenic ride but too far
Had a great guide, Bozh who made us feel safe and comfortable. He was also very informative. The train ride was indeed very scenic. However, it was far too long. A 3.5 hrs forward and another 3.5 hrs ride back totals up to 7 hrs on the train. There is also a total of 3 hrs return trip from the train station Septemvri to Sofia. So thats a total of abt 10 hrs ride. The village Yakoradu is indeed unique but it is way too small and there isnt much to be done there. But we did manage to find the mosque and then had an awesome lunch. If you dont mind the train ride, then its worth to go. We just thought they could cut short the ride to one of the nearer village instead of going all the way up. But then again, they may be restricted by the train schedule.

        A great winter experience!
Had an amazing time and experience with these guys. Awesome guide, help and training and overall day. Lovely views across the peak on the way out. Kept warm with regular hot drinks from the beautiful little hut. A great winter experience!

Seeing the ‘other side’ of Sofia.
Three of us took this tour and thought it was the highlight of our four day trip. Our guide Martin was knowledgable and informative and answered all our questions covering social, political and economic topics. We found it a refreshing insight after the slick city tour. The tram ride to the outskirts of Sofia was enjoyable and we learned a little about local customs and how they differ from our own. Walking was mostly on rough tracks or alongside unadapted roads, so we were glad of sensible footwear. Our guide was adaptable and we tried the Bulgarian snack and drinks at the end of our tour instead of part way through. All three of us really enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend it. Probably best for limited numbers, rather than the fifteen to twenty on city centre tours. Great tour Martin , thank you

        Quite decent
I did actually really enjoy the tour well enough. However, on TripAdvisor, the schedule and the time limit indicated it would take 2.5-3 hours. Rather, it was quite abbreviated from that to 1.5 hours long. I had planned my day expecting 3 wish hours and when he said it was done i was quite surprised. I wasn't upset but i did expect a little more. The guide was very nice and informative, but often put in his own opinions and often used words like 'blah, blah' and swore quite a bit when expressing his opinions (on the political side of Sofia's history) and I saw that as a bit unprofessional. However, I really liked the private tour part, it allows you to ask any questions you may have, where in a big group tour you won't. Overall, I really did enjoy the tour and it didn't hamper my day by ending so early. Just would've liked it a bit more refined/in depth.

        Amazing experience
This tour gave me opportunity to see Sofia in different way. Me and my friends travelled with tram. When we arrive to final stop, we walked a while with our guide and we reached a interesting area. We learned from our guide about the life of people who's living in this area, and we saw the REAL life in the suburbs. Everyone who wants to see how people in suburbs living, to hear interesting stories, to meet great and REAL people - THIS TOUR IS FOR YOU !!!

        Insightful tour
Martin was very knowledgeable about the religions of Budapest. I loved seeing so many religious buildings, inside and out, and learning more about the beliefs and customs of each. There was a particular focus on Christian Orthodox, which I knew very little about and really enjoyed. I also enjoyed learning more about how different religious populations grew and decline, and why. Very interesting tour.

Bulgarian culture and hospitality at its finest!
We have just got back from this fantastic day trip that I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to develop their understanding of Bulgarian folklore and see something unusual while in the country. Our first stop was Blagoevgrad, where we watched the various Kukeri groups from different villages and areas of the city parade along the main boulevard. Our guides Dany and Kalina had given us interesting background information previously and translated the commentary for us. Then we had a traditional Bulgarian lunch and a wander around the old town, which was particularly beautiful in the deep snow! Our final stop was the beautiful Boyana church, which is a truly one-of-a-kind monument and a must-see on your trip to Sofia. Overall, we would highly recommend this tour as it represented good value for money, was extremely interesting and the guides were friendly and knowledgeable. When we return to Bulgaria we would not hesitate to use Tripvam to book further tours. Thank you Dany and Kalina!
