- F9689KGdavidr0 contributionsA definite must for anyone visiting FijiDefinitely a must do if you’re staying in Fiji, especially if it’s your first time. You get to see some of the country’s beautiful landscapes along the Sigatoka river, but best of all you get to meet the lovely people of the local village you visit. They were incredibly welcoming and hospital. On our tour, we were told that the village had very recently lost one of their members, but despite their tragedy, they still made sure to give us the best and happiest experience possible. If you’re looking to do something fun and educational about Fijian life, this is a must!Written 12 February 2025

- AussieCarrie210 contributionsAn adventurous journey and authentic village experience. What a fantastic tour. We had a wonderful experience on this tour travelling with teenagers and 75 yr old grandparents. We really appreciated the opportunity to visit a Fijian village to see how they lived, and it was good to see how actual kava was made and to try some. I would definitely recommend this trip for people of all ages. The boat ride was also fun. You only got wet on the ride back, and we didn't need a change of clothes as we felt refreshed afterwards. I would recommend good walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, a water bottle, and a cash donation for the village. This is a great tour if you have an adventurous spirit.Written 21 December 2024
- 684allal0 contributionsThe Village of Koroua on Sigatoka Rivermy family and i spent 8 days exploring fiji but our day spent in the village of the sigatoka river was by far all of our favourite experience. The village people of Koroua were so kind, welcoming, loving and non - judgmental and will always stay in our hearts. Captain Hot Laps was our speed boat guy who took us to his beautiful village and did some fast 360’s with us in the boat! He also taught us about the different family groups in a Fijian village. He shared a little bit of his own life and he is truely such a selfless and kind human being. We had a traditional ceremony and got to settle into the community hall. after that we got a special welcome with each of our own homemade souvenir to take home. we got to eat their traditional foods and listen to the music they sung. the aunties took my little sister out of my mums hands while she ate and danced and sung to her. it was so beautiful to see how trusting and loving these people were. we also got to dance to their music and they really made an effort to make sure everyone was involved and felt connected. when we were saying our final goodbyes the cheif told us that we were always welcomed back and i think that really touched all of our hearts. we all started as complete strangers from foreign countries all over the world to one big connect blended family in just 2 - 3 hours. my family and i even had our eyes tearing up a little towards the end because we really didn’t want to leave these beautiful people. this is an experience that has changed my perspective on life and the human experience. i will forever hold the village and people of Koroua close to my heart. Thank you for this wonderful time Captain Laps and Koroua! 💗💗Written 17 December 2024

- MaureenM14680 contributionsGreat fun meeting Fijian villagersGreat fun taking the jet boat down the river . Lovely visit to Fijian village where we shared a lunch made by locals . They so appreciate the gifts we brought , fishing line and lures, colouring books and markers, soap and maple syrup from Canada . Very grateful people. Be prepared! It was stinking hot so hat, sunscreen are a must . You will get wet on the return as Captain Leps does 360’s which are a blast and photos are taken for purchase. There was several steep hills to climb getting to village and return to launch , not impossible but just be aware. Time is spent at the beginning and end at several stores in Sigatoka where souvenirs can be bought. Overall a great dayWritten 26 October 2024
- annehC2497JJ0 contributionsWorthwhile experience of authentic village lifeThe Sigatoka River Safari was a good day out for all ages. However, children under 4 found it a long day. Especially as we had very hot weather. The river journey up and back was lovely and fun. Josh (aka Cpt Jack) has been driving on the river for 18 years so not much he can’t tell you about the history of the area. We went to Koroua Village for the tour and kava ceremony. Followed by traditional meal and some entertainment. It’s an excellent way to experience an authentic village and appreciate how they live.. No hurry, no worry..and firm family ties. Bus trip - Outrigger Resort to town 10mins, then Sigatoka. Town to river 30mins Boat ride River to village 1 hr Some walking required Handy hints : Do not wear a hat in village Cash or physical card for safari photos as no wifi Cash for village leader as a gift Sunblock Bag for dry itemsWritten 20 October 2024

Very enjoyable tour with the family. We got a peek into Fijian history and culture plus some stunning views of the countryside.
We set out early from our hotel collecting other tourists along the way. Had a quick stop for a toilet break in a shop selling some lovely Fijian souvenirs and the women were given sarongs to be respectful in the kava ceremony we’d be attending later. We then hopped back on to our bus to head to the official starting point of the different tours (splitting into our Naihehe Cave tour and the jet boat tours).
We boarded a little barge thing to cross the river (lifejackets provided) then climbed aboard a small convoy of safari cars to zip along the windy roads through the tropical forest around us. Tour guide Tia and driver Sponge Bob were fantastic, manoeuvring the paths and by other vehicles!
We passed through a traditional Fijian village and heard about daily life for the people of the area. Tia was knowledgeable about the region and was happy to answer any questions we had.
We presented a kava root to a Fijian priest then enjoyed a kava ceremony before going into the Naihehe Cave. Word of warning - wear shoes you are prepared to get wet! The entrance to the cave involves walking through knee-high water under the 'pregnancy gap' before you reach the large, cavernous cave!
The tour of the cave has some physical requirements so I would recommend a reasonable level of fitness and sure-footedness – there’s only one hand rail up a small incline, there are some moments of crouching under the rocky entrance, etc. Nothing too challenging and there was an age range of children to a couple in their 70s on the tour but be mindful.
Inside the cave we learnt more about the history and culture of the local people.
Afterwards, the BBQ lunch provided was simple but plentiful, fresh and delicious and more opportunity to chat.
We had a great time on this tour and was one of the highlights of our trip to Fiji. Can recommend 100%
Also spotted a mongoose on the way back, which a thrill in itself!

If you're going to do one tour in Fiji, I highly recommend the off road cave safari. This fantastic half day trip gives you an insight into genuine Fijian villages, lead by the absolute legend Sadam (a local himself) who was passionate about sharing how people in this area of Fiji live and informing us of the local culture. Whilst in the cave he told us of the history and more recent personal experiences of the cave.
Moses was a fabulous driver who drove us through the villages in a very cool off road car to the priest's house where we were given permission to visit the cave. This also gave us the opportunity to introduce ourselves. (Ladies are given a sarong at the beginning of the tour to cover up & can keep the scarf afterwards)
The cave itself was beautiful - it contained some very unique formations and it was entertaining to squeeze through the smaller gaps at the entrance to the cave. Be prepared to get your shoes drenched though! (I'd recommend wearing shorts as the water reaches your shins and higher in some parts).
After we'd visited the cave we had a really delicious lunch and enjoyed some kava with the priest (optional) I was a little apprehensive as I'd not tried kava before, but I'm glad I went for it!
The journey back to "base" was just as fun, with locals shouting "bula!" and giving us big waves. The children even ran over to give us a high five through the window of the vehicle - it was a very joyful experience. Overall, a really fantastic trip and a really awesome crew!

We are so glad we received information for this tour at the Shangri-La Resort. Clear information provided on what to expect and bring and a very reasonable cost for half a day. We were picked up on a very comfortable van by Ace and taken 15 minutes to town to sign in etc. Back on the bus for about 20 minutes with a guide explaining some really interesting facts about the local area and answering questions that we had. We then had a short speed boat trip across the lake and those who needed help getting off or on were provided with a gentle hand. Terry and SpongeBob then took us off road in a Bula Air van (haha) and stopped to pass some treats to local village kids on our trek to the cave. We were explained customs in entering a new village, meeting the Priest for blessing prior to entering the cave. The cave tour was amazing. Best to wear water shoes and shorts as water can go up to your knees in one part and only one part we had to crab crawl under. The lunch provided had a huge variety of local fresh foods which was incredible and then we did the reverse trip back. Picked up 8am. Returned home at 2:45pm. Highly recommend for an authentic experience!

Moses and Tia made the experience very memorable. We had read all the reviews previously and it lived up to expectations. Their knowledge of the villages and landmarks made it the most memorable thing we did on own trip. Moses is part of the village you pass through, and seeing his family and children was beautiful. Having to ask permission to enter the caves and go through their traditions was insightful and we highly recommend this to all travelling Fiji. The village kids came inside the cave with us and we’re holding hands with us and helping us through. The history behind the cave is exceptional to learn about and overall we cannot fault this tour. There was 6 people including us taking part in the tour so we felt extra special and looked after during the tour. The cave safaris is less popular than the river, however believe the cave Safari was much more memorable for us! Although, both great.
Tia and Moses themselves make this tour worth it. Book it!!! You will not regret it.

We recently experienced the Naihehe Cave tour with Moses and Saddam as our guides. Saddam was a passionate and experienced guide throughout the tour providing a wealth of knowledge on the history of the cave and those who inhabited it. Moses worked with the local chief assisting us with approval to visit the cave and to cook the bbq whilst we explored the caves wonders with Saddam. These gentlemen made the experience valuable and we recommend it to those looking for an historical insight through their eyes.

Such a great day! The cave and it's history are both incredibly sad, somewhat disturbing and at the same time amazing; told incredibly passionately and knowledably by Tia and Sadam. Only one small Bula Crap story was 😉
The drive there was fabulous too, with Zac our driver (who thought I was a little cray cray for fastening my seat belt, a good laugh for the both of us!) and Una, a fountain of knowledge!
During the drive to the cave entry, we stopped every now and then to hear information about local plants and sites along the way. Eating wild turmeric is delicious, but be aware of those stained teeth 😅
Driving through the villages, the little kiddies on the side of the road, eagerly waving or giving high fives as we're driving past; make your heart melt with their most amazing smile and heart felt 'bula' greeting💗
The kava giving ceremony to ask permission to enter the cave offered an insight into tradition and was beautiful to be part of.
The BBQ lunch expertly cooked by Zac, was THE most delicious lunch, not 5 star, but 10 STAR to me! Even if you're a vegetarian or vegan, there's plenty of choice.
Then it was time to head back, which seemed way too soon!
In terms of clothing and foot wear... I just wore shorts and opted for my jandles when walking through the cave. You do get wet (up to knees or slightly higher) and in parts it is a bit slippery. But there were people of all ages & abilities and also parents holding young toddlers in the group, and everyone seemed to love it!
Thank you to the team, Tia, Sadam, Una and Zac! I had a fantastic time and you played a big part in that 🥰 oh, and I would be remiss at not mentioning Ace, the lovely driver who did the hotel transfers. Vinaka vakalevu 😊

Such a fantastic day out with Tia & Moses. Through the villages and along the river the scenery was the 'real' fiji - exactly what we came to see. How the farmers live and make a living was so interesting. The children swimming the river for school, even in flood! Then the story of the cave. This can only be told by Tia after you've been welcomed from the priest with a kava ceremony. A heartbreaking story told from such a strong woman proud of her heritage brought tears to our eyes and definitely made us reflect. Top job to Moses our driver, Tia our guide and to the priest for allowing safe passage and permission as well as great kava, vanaka - Sam & Starcee ❤️

Jack, Una, and Saddam were so friendly and so full of wonderful cultural and geographic information! Saddam taking us in the cave and relating how some of the earlier Fijians lived was both frightening and amazing. Knox was our driver from the hotel and he was so friendly and funny! Amazing journey all around.

The tour started with a really fun drive to the cave in a specially built 4 wheel drive vehicle.
Our guide Una told us all about the villages along the way.
We had a very nice kava ceremony prior to entering the cave with guide Moses and the Priest, Bill.
The cave tour was very interesting. Our guide Una told us all about the history of the cave and the people who lived and worshipped there. The cave interior was very dramatic and beautiful. The rooms inside were ginormous! Everyone was provided headlamps and it was very safely run.
We had a delicious BBQ lunch waiting for us upon exiting the cave. Plenty of vegetable, meat and fruit presented buffet style with soft drinks and water.
We were glad we bought individually wrapped candy when the tour stopped at the store so we could easily pass it out to the kids of various villages on the drive when they came out to greet us all along the way.
There was no need for change of clothes or towel for our cave tour. We wore shoes that were good in water and shorts with tee shirts. If the water was higher, we might have needed dry clothes.
Everyone was very professional and friendly. Guides Una and Moses were excellent!
We definitely recommend this cave tour to everyone who visits Fiji!

Not strenuous walking, but to enter the cave at the end of the drive you have to be able to crawl thru a gap that is just below waist height..

Worth doing the tour beautiful views of the Sigatoka valley and the cave tour was interesting as well and BBQ lunch was excellent. They also do a Jet boat tour of the river and visit a village for lunch and spend the day with the villagers dancing and generally getting to know how they live etc. I did not do this one but a couple of my children did and what they described it was better again. Actually wished I had gone on this one. Overall though cave tour was informative and a very beautiful tour.

Would this tour be suitable for a mobile 82 yo (with walking stick)?
Written 15 June 2019
It might be. There is a 45-minute ride on a very bumpy road up the mountain to reach the cave. Then the entrance to the cave requires you to crouch down and walk forward while crouching for about a metre. Inside the cave, it's easy to walk around, though a little slippery sometimes because there's a river running through it. Other than those things, it's not at all a strenuous walk.
