About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- FloraH940 contributionsAmazing Alpaca Adventure! This tour was incredibly convenient, informative and overall great throughout. Our guide Simon was energetic, passionate and knowledgeable throughout the entire two days. He was a great conversationalist and willing to answer any questions, whether they be historical or logistical. This tour took all the stress away from getting to Machu Picchu and allowed us to instead enjoy the journey as well the destination. Thank you Simon!Written 13 January 2025
- AlDowning0 contributionsSome things you should know.First of all generally, this was an experience of a lifetime. I can't encourage you enough to make the effort to walk the Inca Trail. There were a lot of things about this tour that were outstanding. I took the 5 day, 4 night trip, the food, the hard work of the porters and cooks, the amazing vistas and fulfilling a lifelong dream of seeing Machu Picchu in a unique way. However, there were specific aspects of Alpaca that I think everyone considering this tour should understand. I was never told that I could pay a little extra for my own solo tent, luckily at the last minute, this option was offered. Not sure what I would have done if I had 50 per cent less room in the tent. Ask, if you want this option. Also, on the night before informational meeting, I was asked to provide my passport number and insurance policy number without anyone telling me I needed this info in advance of the meeting and even after a photocopy of my passport was already taken upon my final payment. My guide had some great points but there were some fundamental things that were a bit of a turnoff. The worst was reaching the end of the trail on the last day after four rugged days on the trail. The guide dragged out the whole process of taking pictures in the Alpaca company t-shirt and getting just about the last bus to Aguas Calientes. Everybody wanted to just get to their hotel, take a shower and relax, especially as they had to be up early to go back to Machu Picchu the next morning. So then, with all of us standing on the street in Aguas Calientes, our guide then says, we are all going to meet at a restaurant in a few minutes, would you like to meet at seven or seven thirty, giving everybody about an hour to get into their hotel room and clean up, again this after four days on the trail. Having paid a supplement for a nicer hotel, I bascially said that I would eat dinner on my own and pass on the restaurant. My guide then said, oh, we have a different program for you. Then after he checked most of the group into the standard hotel, he walked me to my hotel and explained that included in the cost of my room, this four star hotel would provide a free dinner, and free complimentary drink. The dinner, in a fabulous luxury hotel dining room, was great incredibly relaxing especially when I heard the next day that the Alpaca meal was in a restaurant owned by the company and dragged on for hours. I'm sure I would have never known about this perk unless I opted out. Also, the guide may try to get you to turn in your duffel bags in Aguas Calientes, telling you to put the contents in a plastic garbage bag. Somebody in my group immediately refused and said that she was told she could return the duffel bag in Cuzco. Which you can and we all did. Don't be afraid to push back on any guide who wants you to do something that is foolish or annoying. I have heard that some guides try to force slower trekkers to get up early and start in advance of the main group, frequently in the dark. I would flat out refuse such a request which is dangerous and unnecessary. Luckily, none of our group was asked to do this. Also, the chairs we sat in during meals were plastic stools with no back that were incredibly uncomfortable and even unstable at times. This may sound petty but after eight hours on the trail, something more comfortable should be provided. You'll definitely understand when you have this experience. The tipping process was also completely haphazard, awkward and not really orchestrated in a way that pretty much left the process up to us. Luckily, someone in our group took over this process in an effcient way that at least made this tolerable, but again it was not handled well. I would also not tip your guide until the very last minute, at least with my guide there was always some passive aggressive attitude and I am not sure how he would have behaved had he already received his tip, especially in the confusion in Aguas Calientes, and the departure back to Cuzco. And as far as how great Alpaca treats all of their porters, clearly all of these folks work for tips and literally some of the porters had sneakers instead of boots on the trail, incredibly dangerous, considering the weight they carried. If this is indicative, they are not treated all that well, they sleep in the tent that we have meals in and are way less comfortable then we are, which is not exactly comfortable. Again, a great experience, but there were some rough edges and a rushed feeling throughout that did make this seem like a very impersonal operation. I would take the Five day, four night tour because you get to Machu Picchu twice and you don't have to rush to the gate practically at dawn, instead you get there at a leisurely pace in mid afternoon when the park is practically deserted. It also allows you to take the Hiram Bingham train which is expensive but also gets you to Cuzco directly by cab as opposed to the Vistadome which is train and bus. I left three stars so that others may understand that this is by no means a flawless operation.Written 13 January 2025

- Sightseer6130170 contributionsImpressive tourI recommend our best tour guide ,Carlos Argque, young, professional, energetic! With his detailed Inca history explained, very informative. Our chef ,Donato C.,he is definitely a magician, during the trekking tour thanks for his cuisine ! Written 11 January 2025

- O3696GWnicolah0 contributionsGreat hike with Luz and Alpaca! My day tour of Rainbow Mountain with Alpaca was a great experience. Although the weather was cold and I struggled with the altitude it was well worth the hike up for the beautiful scenery and Luz was an amazing guide. The food and transport were excellent. Would recommend.Written 11 January 2025
- mgK3601YR0 contributionsWonderful experienceLovely trip with our wonderful guide, Walter. Very well organized and prepared from the beginning when organizing the pickup from hotel, until the last train ride. Walter is very knowledgeable about everything from local history to flora to world history. He is also very patient with us taking all the pics, and making sure we have the best ones! We would not have taken some amazing pictures of Machu Picchu without his help! The lunch on the trail was very delicious and rich also! I feel bad for those with boxed lunchesWritten 10 January 2025

- Elliot T0 contributionsHoneymoon TrekMyself & my wife had a great honeymoon trek, thoroughly enjoyed the experience and well worth the money. Our guide David Condori Villanueva was exceptional, his English was perfect and easy to understand which made it a lot easier for us during the trek and tour of Machu Picchu. Very knowledgeable and an all round top man, would highly recommend David to anyone else. During the first day our meal was done by Ramon and his team of porters. The amount of food and quality were amazing, so much food, and all cooked up on the mountain just prior to the Sun Gate. How they carry everything up is crazy! Our group of 6 was a good mix, ourselves being from England, 3 from USA and one from Norway. The meal on the first night was another great chance to have a conversation with everyone in the group and get to know one another. The hotel selected by the company was also great and very accommodating with any needs. In summary David, Ramon and the team were so friendly and accommodating. We might just have to come back in the future for an anniversary trek.Written 8 January 2025

I did the 4D/3N Inca Trail hike with my friend through Alpaca Expeditions. Our tour guide was Isao and his assistant was JC. Isao was an amazing and accommodating guide with a great sense of humor. He made the trip very enjoyable and provided lots of history at the different archeological sites. JC was also great and was always willing to stay behind and assist people that needed help in any way. He’s in training to become a guide and I think that he’s going to make an amazing one.
Alpaca’s accommodations are by far the nicest of any of the tour agencies. The extra cost is truly reflected in the services and dedication to the hikers. Isao and Alpaca had a perfectly timed itinerary so that we were always one of the first groups to the campsites and archeological sites. They even switched all their plans last minute and sent us up a day early to avoid the strikes and road closures (some groups decided not to do this and were unable to begin their hikes).
Isao and JC were fantastic leaders throughout the duration of the trip. They always built in extra time into our hikes, meaning we were always early, even on the second day which required us to stop so frequently I was sure we would be late). Meanwhile, other groups were making it to the campsites after the sun had already set.
Sergio, our chef, and the sous chef/waiter/porters were all terrific as well. The food was first class with so many courses. Sergio always went the extra mile by carving animals out of fruits, making us special desserts, etc.
If you’re looking for the finishing touches, high quality guides, and overall safety, I highly recommend booking through Alpaca Expeditions. They are the most well trusted and reputable tour company for the Inca Trail. The trail can be treacherous at some points, which makes me feel this isn’t the hike to skimp on and go with another company just to save a couple bucks.
If you do book with Alpaca, please know this:
- Bring more money than is recommended on the Alpaca website for tipping. Our guide gave us much higher estaimayes than what was online (I ended up tipping 400 soles, broken up amongst the porters, chefs, guide, and assistant guide).
- You do not need to bring a face towel, trash bags, rain poncho, or sleeping bag liner (if you are renting a sleeping bag through Alpaca).
- Most of the backpack covers that are provided are not waterproof (random assortment of waterproof and not waterproof). Bring your own waterproof cover.

Our guide, Juan Carlos Zuloaga, provided us with so much invaluable information on the Inca’s history and culture, local floral and fauna, and animal life as well. Juan Carlos was passionate about his work and teaching us about his culture and he was fun and easy to laugh with as well. Juan Carlos went above and beyond helping us schedule a COVID test in our hotel for our departure from Peru. I would highly recommend asking for Juan Carlos to lead your tour as he will guarantee that you will have a great time and leave with a greater understanding of the Inca. Along with our guide, the team of porters led by Eugenio were amazing. They hiked with heavy loads and passed us on the trails and then had lunch or dinner waiting for us as we arrived. They also always clapped as we made our way into camp each day even though they were the ones who deserved the applause! They thought of all the little details from bowls of hot water and soap for us every morning and night to the tents/camp being setup perfectly. And last but definitely not least was the chef, Sebastian. I thought every meal was like eating in a five star restaurant. Lunches and dinners started out with the most delicious soups and what followed was more delectable feasts of some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. Sebastian even surprised us with a cake on our last night and I didn’t even know you could make a cake without an oven. To say our group of five hikers was impressed is an understatement. This was a trip of lifetime and I would recommend alpaca expeditions to make your adventure perfect.

We did the 4D/3N Inka trail with Nilton, Walter, and Max. Our head guide Nilton had such amazing knowledge of the trail. There were dozens of other groups and he was navigating the trails so much better than the other groups to hit the landmarks at the right time, with the right lighting and the right weather, despite less than ideal conditions while we were on the trail. Nilton was able to answer every question from Inca history to astronomy to botany to bird calls. Nilton was a truly phenomenal guide.
Every other aspect of the trip also exceeded our expectations. The food was fantastic. We were given amazing multi course meals using locally sourced Peruvian food. The porters perform amazing feats of strength to make the trek possible. Alpaca Expeditions was a bit more expensive than other companies but it is clear that they treat their crew better than any of the other groups. It's worth the extra cost to support a sustainable business with the best crew.
Addendum: after the trek, the train to go back to Cusco was not running due to strikes and protests. Nilton was able to get the group back safely. We had to do an extra 3-hr hike around the back of the mountain and take a very long bus ride, but he got us back and we all felt safe when he was around.

We had a phenomenal Inca trail trip, which included a day at Sacred Valley. Highly recommend the guides Alvin, Yoel, and Rosel. Most of the guides have hiked the trail hundreds of times. Alvin was wonderfully cheery and upbeat - he’s really fun to hike with. Yoel is a great leader and we enjoyed talking about his Incan ancestry. And Rosel is an expert - he has hiked Inca more than 700 times and was very knowledgeable in explaining the history behind the Incan sites. These three guides and all of the staff (chefs and porters) were extraordinarily kind to us. The porters, in particular, are INCREDIBLE and deserve all the praise.
On feedback for the tour company: I hope Alpaca takes kind care of its employees, in particular the porters. I’d say the Alpaca company could operationally make things easier and/or more efficient for its team - e.g., having tent numbers assigned in advance with name cards for duffel bags (rather than scrambling the morning of with writing these down). And would recommend creating more of a relationship between tourist and porter (e.g., assigning a porter to you, so you can get to know them /personally give thanks and provide tip).
Tips: Bring cash tips (in soles) for all the team members!

Alpaca Expeditions goes above and beyond to make this a once in a lifetime experience for all of the trekkers! I really did not know what to expect, but Alpaca was on top of everything and knew exactly what to do to ensure that the trip was a success. Initially, planning was easy and communication via email was always informative and responses were provided in a timely manner. The website has everything you need (follow the packing list, they know what they are talking about) and the night before your trek they meet with you to debrief and make sure you are prepared and all of your questions are answered.
As for the trek itself, the experience is priceless. Alpaca uses local Peruvian porters who are eager and excited to help make you’re trip a success. With 13 trekkers we were given, I believe, 22 porters. Each porter carries equally weighted bags filled with your tents, food, duffles, etc. They rush through the trail to get to the lunch sites and camp sites before you, have everything set up when you arrive, cheer you on as you go, clean up when you leave, and then pass you on the trail to do it all over again for the next lunch/campsite. I do not speak fluent Spanish, but the porters all did their best to communicate positivity and encouragement. You can tell that Alpaca treats them well and that they are happy to work for the green machine.
If you think you are going to lose weight during the trek YOU ARE WRONG! The food we ate during the hike was some of the best food that I have ever had in my life!!! Our chef Yuri could honestly run his own 5 star restaurant with the food he was serving us! Every meal had soup to start and nearly five different dishes/sides to choose from. The real challenge is to keep yourself from overeating so that you can continue the hike!!! You absolutely have to try a little of everything, but remember that the trek is not a walk in the park so nourish yourself but don’t eat yourself into a food coma!
Finally, and most importantly, the guides are the ones who really make the experience unique. Henry was our assistant guide and he worked to keep everyone motivated and laughing. He was ready to answer any questions and help with anything that we needed. Our main guide, Alvin, was so incredibly knowledgeable of the Peruvian Quechua culture and the history. Walking along and seeing the sights is one thing, but being with someone who can make the sights and the stories come to life is a completely other thing. He shared his culture, traditions, experiences, and knowledge every step of the way. He fully prepared us for what was to come and it really felt like he tailored the experience to the people of the group. He challenged us all to have a positive mental attitude (PMA!) and was the reason our group was as enjoyable as it was. It takes a strong leader to unite 13 strangers in a family.
I know this was a long review, but I really feel like I absolutely have to give a shout out to every single person who made this trip such an amazing experience for me: the Alpaca administration, the green machine porters, the amazing chef Yuri, and the spectacular guides Alvin and Henry! I will forever recommend Alpaca to anyone visiting Peru and look forward to doing additional treks with them!

We had the #1 Team!
Russell, Walter, and Max made our journey to Machu Pichu unforgettable; their energy and optimism were contagious. The food prepared by the chef(Moses) was delicious, and the porter(sherpa) service was second to none. Due to a strike in Cusco, Alpaca had to adjust our departure time to the evening before our scheduled date. Russell handled the logistics of getting staffing, equipment, and transportation quickly; it was challenging. Still, the entire team worked hard to ensure we were safe and comfortable and would experience a fantastic adventure.
The views are worth every step!
The trail is strenuous at times; I recommend hiking poles, comfortable-lightweight trail shoes (altras), and dressing in layers. (I also recommend packing an anti-diarrhea medicine and spending three days In Cusco to acclimate to the altitude. You will be exposed to different foods and conditions that may affect you in Cusco and on the trail). Our "Super Hiker" family of 15 was of various athletic abilities and ages from the mid-20s to 68. We bonded very well and had an incredible time together, on and off the trial. Still, you could also break away easily and hike in silence if you wanted to solo hike from time to time (I will miss our time together). Walter and Russell kept a moderate pace and ensured no one would be left behind. We were very safe in their capable hands. A bonus is you get to stop from time to time to hear stories of the Inka people and learn about their history.
The journey is the destination.
This trip was one I will recommend repeatedly, and I will cherish the memories for a lifetime.

I had such an amazing experience trekking through the Andes to Machu Picchu with Alpaca Expeditions! My tour guide Frank was very knowledgeable of the land and history of the Inca civilization. The head chef went above and beyond to prepare foods to our dietary needs & were extremely tasty every day! The scenery of hiking through different landscapes and watching the sunrise from the tent on the mountain top will be an experience I will never forget. This company treated the hikers like royalty and I would 100% recommend booking a trip with them.

My state of physical ability being what it is 2 years after the start of the pandemic, I was a little worried about doing this hike, but the folks at Alpaca did a great job helping me know exactly what to expect coming into it. Every step along the way they were great at communicating and letting me know exactly what I would need and exactly what I was getting myself into.
Throughout the actual trek, our guide Miguel was very knowledgable and did a good job managing the faster and slower group members, answering any questions we had, telling us about the plans and what to expect for each day. The chaskis (sp?) very impressively had our tents set up for us when we got to the campsite every day, and our fantastic chef Gregorio cooked incredible meals for us every morning, afternoon, and evening, even working around dietary restrictions that some group members had.
In the end, we got to see some incredible sights, learn some really interesting facts, and feel very impressed with how much we accomplished. It was very difficult, especially that notorious climb on the second day, but there is definitely sufficient time that anyone can struggle up it. And do make sure that (if you go in March) you're prepared adequately with waterproofing, as it was quite rainy. However, this was a fantastic trip, and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in archaeology, hiking, and/or adventure.

My 17 yo daughter and I booked the 4 day Classic Inca Trail hike through Alpaca Expeditions. It is difficult to put into words what an incredible experience it was from start to finish. Communication was top notch from the time we booked the trip through to the end. We were supposed to leave for our hike early Monday morning, but due to rumors of a strike that was expected to disrupt road transportation, we left late the night before and camped at the trail head so we could start our hike on time. That is just one small example of their commitment to ensuring we had the best experience. Our guides were Rosel (lead) and Juan Carlos and they were absolutely amazing. Rosel has done the hike ~700 times. He is an expert hiker and historian, and his passion for Peru, for nature and his heritage is infectious. He made sure no one was left behind, and that those who fell behind did not feel bad about being “slow.” I got sick on the last night, just prior to entering Machu Picchu. I asked him what would happen if I wasn’t able to hike. His immediate response was, “You will make it. I will stay with you.” He did stay with me, carrying my day pack for me, and constantly checking in to see how I was doing.
One thing that sets Alpaca Expeditions apart from the other local tour companies is the way they treat their porters. The porters work HARD, carrying ~40 lbs of gear apiece, and moving fast enough to stay ahead of the hikers to have the next night’s camp setup upon arrival. They are all provided with proper clothing and shoes, and Rosel made sure each porter had an opportunity to introduce himself so we could thank them for serving us. Our chef was incredible and we ate like royalty. How he was able to prepare what he did on a 2-burner hot plate in a makeshift kitchen is beyond me. He even prepared and decorated an entire cake for our last night. Absolutely amazing.
I have done a fair amount of hiking, but nothing this difficult, and I had never camped. The packing list they provided in advance coupled with the guidance along the way made our trip just perfect. I wouldn’t have done anything differently. I highly recommend booking this trek through Alpaca Expeditions, and also recommend requesting Rosel and Juan Carlos. I can’t imagine a better, more supportive team!

Amazing 4 days of hiking through the Andes and tropical forest to Macchu Picchu. No better way to see and really feel this place. Incomparable. Our guides Jose and Jimmy were extremely thoughtful, making sure that everyone gets the best experience at all times. Jose was very knowledgeable about the culture and history and made the trip super interesting as we explored through numerous archeological sites over the four days. From his 16 years of experience, he knew which spots were the best spots at which time. Our team was always at the right place at the right time despite unpredictable weather in the mountains. Towards the end of the trip we found our that Jimmy his been carrying two oxygen tanks in his backpack in case of emergency at high altitudes. Porters and the chef were amazing as well. Always tirelessly working and making sure that we gain more weights than lose them despite hours of walking everyday. Every meal was way too delicious for something that you should be having at 10,000 ft altitude in the wild. Food that we enjoyed ranged from Lomo Saltado to Trout ceviche to chocolate crepe to cakes for desserts. Unbelievable. Alpaca Expedition also treats their staff very fairly. Superhuman porters who carry heavy bags for you through insane hills and mountain peaks are well equipped. We saw several porters who belong to other companies not even being equipped with proper shoes. They were wearing sandals. All in all, incredible experience over the four days. Bring both summer clothes and thicker clothes (fleece, down jacket etc) for nights. It will get cold once the Sun goes down and it will be sweltering during the day under the sun. Hats, sunscreen and insect repellents are a must. Also bring flashlight (headlamps preferred) and extra batteries or portable powerbanks since there is no access to electricity or phone service. And be physically fit and ready because it's not an easy hike. No matter how tough you find this hike as you power through it, ultimately you'll be more than glad that you did it.

Is there a place where I can charge my phone while trekking?
Written 19 December 2023
No. The best solution is to have a power bank. Some had a device that could give three charges.

I went myself and joined a group. The group has solo travelers, couples and families. We ended up having a great time. One thing to note is that they might charge an extra fee for solo tent. Or they might be able to put you with another solo traveler.

does it include going up to Machu Pichu? or do you have to buy extra tour or tickets to get entrance into MP?

Hi, can I join only day1? I'd like to camp, staying the night with the group, and come back by myself.
Written 13 November 2022
No! Is the short answer- no company would take someone out for one day/night and then leave them on there own. If you treck with a company they are obliged morally and legally to ensure your safety.
There are paths of the inca trail all around cusco go on an organised tour from there for the day without camping.

Hi how much are sleeping bags and air mats to hire please? Thanks
Written 22 October 2022
Really not that expensive. I think it’s around $25 total to rent both of them. The price is on their website.

Please could you tell me when the dates are released for next year by the trail. We need to know how far in advance we should be by. Thank you

Hi my husband and I are interested in doing this trip. Do we have to return to Cuzco at the end though? We are going to continue travelling around Peru after the tour so to return to the start point might not work for us. What would happen with our luggage would that come with us too? Thank you
Written 2 September 2022
We left our luggages at our hotel and we were driven back by Alpaca Expeditions to the same hotel after our 4d/3n Classic Inca Trail trek. The hotels are very accommodating in keeping the luggages for free. We got back late so I think it’s better for you to stay 1 more night in Cuzco to rest before moving on to other places in Peru.

My friend and I joined the Alpaca group in Ollantatambo. Upon our return we stayed another night in the same hotel. They held our luggage for us while on the trek. It worked perfectly and we didn’t have to get up as early as those starting in Cusco nor did we have a long bus ride after the hike. Ollantatambo is a lovely town. Highly recommend staying there.
