Replete with bucolic landscapes, the island is famous for its striking wooden churches, built by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries. On the northwest coast, where blue whales are concentrated, there is also the Islotes de Puñihuil Natural Monument, a breeding site for Magellanic and Humboldt penguins.
